Samsung's Q1 Ultra Mobile PC gets Ultra Premium, dude
Man, with words like "Ultra" (twice) and "Premium" in its name, you'd think that Samsung's latest bump to their UMPC platform -- the Q1 Ultra Mobile PC Ultra Premium -- would be something to shout about. Unfortunately, it's just their 7-inch Q1 Ultra done up with a 1.33GHz ULV Core Solo CPU. A nice increase in raw power, for sure. Yay?

I must admit I bought, traveled with and then sold a Q1U. It was good for storage, using Google Maps, watching movies, and a browser, since it has a decent screen resolution and storage, but I was glad to get rid of it. A faster CPU is not going to save it. To be at all useful and not be an insult, it needs a real keyboard - the split keyboard is more annoying than useful. Nokia 810's slide out keyboard is a good try. Other components that are very disappointing are the built in webcams. They're basically insulting compared to any thing half decent. (Compare them to the Macbook's cam which is sharp, fast and high contrast). The trackpoint should work like a trackpoint, not some infuriating deviation. Next, lose all the blinking distracting LEDs on the bezel right in direct eye position, and make them taskbar icons or move them elsewhere. Then, get rid of Vista. It's too demanding. It takes a looooooong time for simple things like directory contents to appear. Change the ugly shiny case for something matte and less slippery. Then, finally you might have a great UMPC.

That's good stuff - I really like the split keyboard on my Nokia E70 phone and have been looking at this for a long time, but it sounds like even with the speed boost there's things that need to be worked out - shall wait

I think some people find split keyboards easier than others, but if you can, definitely wait, there's a fair amount of competition out there and the Q1 really should be a lot better. It seems more like a checklist effort than something where any real thought was put into its use.

I have one and I love it. I just got it for web browsing and emailing and it works great for that. I think the problem is people are buying this and expecting it to replace a real laptop (not going to happen). I use my cell phone as a modem and now have web access wherever I go without using wi-fi hotspots. I bought the cheaper version for $749 at BB so maybe that lowered my expectations.

Oh crap. I would loved to have gotten this one... but I have the original Q1U-V, which I carry with me everywhere... I wonder what the battery life is like?
Oh well, next year. :)
