Asus denies plans for 10-inch Eee PC, for now
Well, it looks like German Asus spokesman Holger Schmidt may have jumped the gun slightly when he seemingly confirmed that the company would be shipping a 10-inch Eee PC sometime in 2008, as Asus has now shot back and denied any imminent plans for such a device. It's far from an outright denial, however, with Asus reportedly telling EeeUser.com only that, "there are no plans for 10-inch at the moment," and that, "We will have 8G with the same form factor and 7-inch screen size as the Eee PC 4G now." Of course, it's entirely possible (even likely) that "at the moment" doesn't mean all of 2008, although it also seems that the 7-inch Eee PCs will have the spotlight to themselves, at least for a little while.[Via Reg Hardware]

What does 8G and 4G mean. I want the black one but there really hard to get hold of in britain. Does it run XP, Ubuntu and Vista?
Randomness @ Nov 15th 2007 5:38PM
It's called not cannibalizing some of your sales. We saw the same thing with the Xbox360 and hdmi denials, but of course we knew it was coming even through all the denials. Same thing happened with cheaper ps3 denials, we knew it was coming, but they couldn't afford to lose the sales they could make now at a higher price. Basic business strategy.

4G & 8G is the solid state drive capacity. Yes it Runs XP and Ubuntu, vista is too much for it to handle.
joey @ Nov 15th 2007 7:09PM
Not really, some one has done it alredy, also leopard
Tim @ Nov 15th 2007 5:42PM
But ubuntu and XP spec is higher? How can it handle something when the spec is so much lower?

Obviously they'll improve this over time, and that will mean a bigger screen at some point. In the meantime I tried it out on my lunch break yesterday (the black one is nicer than white) and I have to say I was VERY VERY impressed. It looks great, and it's very speedy. OpenOffice works wonderfully. Really if you need to check your Gmail, surf on Firefox via Wifi, write some stuff in OpenOffice, watch the odd (cough!) downloaded movie - it plays Xvid and Divx - then this is great and genuinely mobile. I thought Win XP would be needed but the version of Linux is loads more fun and snappy. A Vista notebook this size will set you back £1500 ... this was on sale for £216! If you need a notebook for literally just that - taking notes then this is the one. Just read this back, sounds like I work for Asus!

Thumbs down for spamming.

If you check over at eeeuser.com , Vista has been installed on the eee.
From my readings the main problem with running vista on it is cutting down its size - it seems to run at a decent speed if you cut it done to its bones.
Deez @ Nov 16th 2007 6:38AM
Has Vista now caught up with XP? What reason should I get Vista over XP? I would actually like the media centre (if it connects to my Xbox360) but what else does it do better?

So that means This ASUS photo of a 10-inch Eee PC is fake?

Anyone know when that 4G Surf comes out? My mom got excited when I told her about how cheap this tiny notebook was gonna be, but for an extra $100 it's not worth it for her to get it just for an integrated webcam and 0.7 hours more battery...
Site says Mid-November, but things have been so quiet (and more about the 8G) I hope they don't overlook it.

Go buy a 15". Geez.

Companies always tell the truth about upcoming products. That's why Apple never released a phone and why the Eee PC is available for $199.
Porkchop Flavored Cupcake @ Nov 15th 2007 9:35PM
Asus is making a 10" lappy, but it isn't for them, it's for Apple.
Tim @ Nov 16th 2007 1:48AM
Forget the 10" screen. Just get rid of the fan when cost makes it possible. Battery will last longer with no fan and a 7" screen. Larger screen will just add cost to PC. We waited this long for a company to make a small PC, why ruin it. If you want a larger or more powerful PC they are already on the market, buy one.
Deez @ Nov 16th 2007 6:35AM
I think what most people want is to expand the current screen so theres no huge black boarder around the edge. Keep the actual size, make it a larger screen. Thats what I want anyway, and I'm definately waiting for the upgrade
Tim @ Nov 17th 2007 2:06AM
The next planned upgraded(2Q 08)is to a lower wattage Intel chip with no fan and the same screen size. But things can change. Hopefully the same price or close to it.
djgary007 @ Nov 30th 2007 1:36PM
I agree with Deez's comment about keeping the asus eee pc the same size but making the screen just that bit larger and increasing the resolution as well.. this is really the only reason i haven't snapped one up yet..
a 8gb version would be nice as well with a 1gb/2gb of RAM.... here's hoping!
:)
