It may be underpowered, but it's got a big heart. Oh, and we hear it's
doing alright for itself in this generation's console war, but that's all hearsay. That's right, Nintendo's
Wii turns
one year old today, and what a
magical year it's been.

The graphics suck, but the games are fun. Now for the next generation Nintendo, get good graphics and fun. Like the 360 without the red ring of death ;)
aaronbareford @ Nov 20th 2007 4:33AM
LOL a "next gen" wii would be pretty sweet.... The graphics it has now don't look too great on my HD TV, ive tried the component cable with 480p - doesn't do much really :(
steve Johnson @ Nov 20th 2007 7:17AM
There already IS a 360 without the red rings of death...it's called a 'Playstation 3'.
That cake looks like crap too. I've never seen a cake that looked dirty before. What did the baker do...drive his muddy truck over it then photograph it? Sheesh!
MatthewJ @ Nov 20th 2007 7:47AM
People who say "The Wiis graphics suck" should be forced to go an buy Super Mario Galaxy and a component cable then INSTANTLY eat their words. Only Ratchet and Clank looks better, and only because its a bit sharper.
i.c. weiner @ Nov 20th 2007 4:45PM
The "dirty part" is actually something called "ICING"
Nick @ Nov 19th 2007 11:02PM
Hooray!
Happy birthday to everyone's favorite motion sensing knows-where-you're-pointing console!
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ Nov 19th 2007 11:04PM
"Eat ME!" said the Nintendo Wii cake.
"Then go out and buy Super Mario Galaxy afterwards!" ..
Derek @ Nov 19th 2007 11:23PM
Happy birthday to a year of fun!
TheGuy @ Nov 19th 2007 11:24PM
THE CAKE IS A LIE!!!
locke6854 @ Nov 20th 2007 2:31AM
LOL vgcats
Krono6 @ Nov 20th 2007 4:15AM
Vgcats? That quote is from Half Life Portal.
locke6854 @ Nov 21st 2007 8:26AM
well i saw it on vgcats first, making fun of portal, but using mario.. princess tells him she has a cake for him in the castle (ala mario 64), then you see him in the corner, crazed, with the words "the cake is a lie" written all on the walls
Glancing Aft @ Nov 19th 2007 11:27PM
And I still haven't been able to buy one... I knew I should have put a reserve in for one.
Jhongerkong @ Nov 19th 2007 11:33PM
Good thing Ryan Block didnt post this, or else he would've ranted on how the cake tasted good, but it's no eclair.
giantenemycrab @ Nov 20th 2007 1:31AM
In Ryan's defense, eclairs do taste pretty darn good.
cashmonee @ Nov 19th 2007 11:42PM
I guess its success goes to show that graphics only gets you so far, and that substance is what people actually want. Imagine that.
CharlieX @ Nov 20th 2007 12:25AM
Yeah, but what is your first reaction when your friend tells you "I want you to meet my friend...she has a nice, uh, personality."
pepper @ Nov 20th 2007 12:41AM
what substance? they have 3 games i would even want to play, zelda, metroid, and galaxy, that is it. and mario games arent even my style. the majority of people that buy these consoles are parents that were simply too cheap to buy the other consoles for their kids. or they were for old people so they could exersize, how proud.
i wouldent call it substance when even wii lovers admit that they havent played their console for months due to lack of good games.now after galaxy we will be hearing similar stories. what decent exclusives are coming in the near future? another mario game, but now they fight, yippie...
they have a nice concept with the wiimote but the lack of games is worse than even the ps3, which is showing a turn around, unlike the wii.

@pepper:
come on guys...
the only bashing thats supposed to be going on in this page is a birthday bash. give the flaming a rest and have some cake =)
happy birthday wii =)
Allan @ Nov 20th 2007 8:09AM
@ pepper:
While you may be too h4rdc0r3 for a Wii and it's inadequate stable of games... obviously some people are buying it and loving it. And I have yet to talk to anyone I know that has a Wii and "hasn't played it in months." It took me almost a year just to get one (mostly lazy) and I haven't stopped playing it since. And I have enough games to keep me occupied for quite a while longer.
Just b/c YOU don't want one or don't want to play it or think it's lame or have some other console or hate Nintendo or whatever the hell your reason is for not liking the Wii... doesn't mean that others don't. So stfu and go make love to your PS3 or something.
Happy birthday, Wii...
insertAlias @ Nov 20th 2007 8:20AM
@pepper
Oddly enough, those are the only three games for the Wii that I have (only got to the console 2 weeks ago). The games are so good that when I sit down, I cant decide which ones to play, because I want to play them all. Even if the Wii didn't have any other good games (which it does have) those 3 games are the ones that made my buy and love my Wii.
Abraham @ Nov 19th 2007 11:49PM
It's my birthday too!
But I haven't gotten a chance to get a Wii yet...
fgpx78 @ Nov 20th 2007 3:34AM
Happy birthday 2u2 :D
Sonic_13 @ Nov 19th 2007 11:49PM
Happy Birthday Wii!
Here is to one awesome year of fun down and many, many more to come!
majortom @ Nov 19th 2007 11:51PM
that cake looks like someone from Folsom prison made it. I would run it through a metal detector...
Brian @ Nov 20th 2007 9:07AM
The back half of the top looks rather dingy...yuck.
Suresh @ Nov 19th 2007 11:56PM
Happy Birthday Wii, I wish I could buy one :-)
mushrooshi @ Nov 19th 2007 11:58PM
It is my birthday too!
BTW, I got the wii on launch day for my b-day last year
lotzosushi @ Nov 20th 2007 12:05AM
At least it LOOKS like the console it's celebrating unlike a certain other birthday cake we saw earlier... :) I call dibs on the Wiimote!
AJ in the East Bay @ Nov 20th 2007 12:21AM
Happy Birthday, Wii! I actually got one on launch day.
Now, stop the minigame crap and put out some more online games. Thanks, Ninty!
Johnny @ Nov 20th 2007 12:25AM
I thinks this cake looks better then the ps3 one. Happy B-Day Wii!

Ahhh.
And a year ago I was outside, freezing my butt while waiting for Best Buy to open.
God it was so cooooooooooold.
Reader @ Nov 20th 2007 1:29AM
Who cares about the Wii? I want to know when the Vii is one year old.
Scott @ Nov 20th 2007 1:31AM
Galaxy = Best game ever made
Thank you for bringing me (my girlfriend and my friends) back into gaming. Wii fucking rules.
Jeff @ Nov 20th 2007 4:14AM
The thing has enough frosting to give you diabetes.
Brian @ Nov 20th 2007 9:08AM
Sorry, but that remote just doesn't look like it will fit my hand. I will hold out for an eclair.
Daimyo Nintendo @ Nov 20th 2007 11:14PM
Id say! Happy Birth Day little mafacka! It's been a year since I stood in line for that little guy. 50 games later and we are having a ton of fun. With Mario Galaxy that first lap around Sol had a great finish.
Silverfrog @ Nov 20th 2007 12:47PM
Yes, and interestingly, the Wii is #1 console in the history of videogames for first year sales, at over 13.2 million sold during its first year. That's not likely to ever be beaten.
debito @ Nov 20th 2007 2:01PM
Happy Birthday Wii ~~!! I will play you more and more with GHIII
David @ Nov 20th 2007 2:23PM
Tsk - that cake's not even close to realistic - where's the jacket on the remote?
Allan @ Nov 21st 2007 10:01AM
Jacket? It doesn't even have a wrist strap. Someone's going to break something.
