Tired of waiting for Black Friday? Just plain terrified of getting
mauled? If you happen to fit into either of the aforementioned categories, take heart, as Dell's got you covered. The firm's 15.4-inch Vostro 1000 -- which was listed
earlier this year for as low as $449 -- has now dipped $50 lower to crack the oh-so-crucial $400 barrier. The all-black lappie features a 1.7GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-53 processor, Windows XP Home Edition, an XGA panel, 120GB 5,400 RPM hard drive, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a DVD writer (with dual-layer DVD+R write capability), ATI's Radeon Xpress 1150 integrated graphics set, 802.11g WiFi and a four-cell Li-ion battery to boot. Nah, this budget machine won't satisfactorily churn through any advanced audio / video editing, but we'd bet it can handle Doom just fine.
400 dollars great deal. I upgraded the hard drive and processor to even more powerful.
Doom?!? Doom can use the CPU for rendering 3D! Infact, it ONLY uses the CPU.
The latest Doom, Doom 3 (with actual 3D graphics)? Bah, bad benchmark. Slap Second Life on it and see what fps it gets while walking around Abbotts' Aerodome. What you get there will easily be doubled in any other game, because SL thwacks a GPU hard by design.
Ugh, now I need to decide if I'm going to camp out in front of Best Buy for the Vaio NR that's selling for the same price, or just order this. Anyone have suggestions?
What ticks me off more is that the Canadian Vostro 1000 starts off at $100 more but the upgrades are the same price. The Canadian Dollar is worth MORE than the US dollar right now. The upgrades being the same price I understand but the adding on $100 for Canadians is stupid.
OMG!!! He's right! *barf*

Where can I purchase the Dell Vostro for $399? Thanks let me know please
Dell
Bought this Friday, should be delivered today. I upgraded to a 6-cell battery and with tax paid just over $470. I had been eying an EEE PC but just couldn't pass this deal up.
Kicks my current laptop's ass (Sempron 3000+, 512 MB of RAM, Radeon Xpress 200m, battery that lasts about an hour).
I got an email about this from Dell yesterday. Here's the link.
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/us/segments/bsd/odg/black_friday_noncust?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&dgc=EM&cid=26199&lid=595277
They also have Vostro mini towers for a low price and the Vostro 1400 14.1 inch lappie for $599 for those who need more portability. That $599 buys you a 1.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, DVD burner and a nVidia Geforce Go 8400m GPU.
Email says offer expires 11/26/07 or while supplies last which suggests Dell may limit the number of computers they sell under this promotion.
Yeah, I came in about an hour too late on this one. I called Dell and they claimed the Vostro 1000 @ $399 was "sold out". You can get the same setup for $499 now. The extra $100 gets you two extra cells in your Li-Ion battery. Oh well.
