Rock Xtreme 770 notebook with GeForce 8800M GTX reviewed
NVIDIA's recently rolled out GeForce 8800M GTX has already made its way into a laptop, specifically Rock's Xtreme 770, specially updated to integrate the new chip. The 770 features a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, a 7200RPM 200GB HDD, 2GB of RAM, a 17-inch 1920x1200 display, and that all important GeForce 8800M GTX graphics card. The new card is certainly no disappointment, kicking the 8700M by a factor of two in most gaming benchmarks (although that also says a lot about the 8700M's lackluster performance.) The bottom line with the 8800M GTX is that it enables acceptable performance in Crysis at reasonable resolutions, which is more than can be said of most desktops. However, you might want to hold off until the GPU reaches lappies other than the Rock Extreme 770, which costs £2,199: that's over $4,500 at the current exchange rate.

VeganFreak @ Nov 24th 2007 2:09PM
yes, but can it play doom?
applefreak @ Nov 24th 2007 2:16PM
yes, yes it can...i hope
ByronGman @ Nov 24th 2007 4:21PM
That is a rip-off.
I purchased almost the same machine 4 months ago for $1,800 (Custom built):
Intel Core 2 Duo (2.4 GhZ)
2 GB RAM @ 800 MhZ
100 GB Hard Drive @ 7200 RPM
Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT
1650 x 1080 Screen
Obviously the 8800 card and addition 100 GB of space would drive up the price some, but that thing should definitely not cost $2,700 more than my machine.
If you really want the new Nvidia card, do yourself a favor a deal with a reputable local shop that can build you one. 90% of the time of the time you're getting better service, better parts, and a better price.

Incorrect. Thanks to new and improved batteries, it has 11 minutes!

I just never understood the whole "laptop gaming" thing. I've tried it and found it to be too expensive and somewhat of a dead-end.
But for those who are into it, this laptop looks to be very impressive.

I never understood the whole "PC gaming" thing. I've tried that and found it to be too expensive. Different people have different budgets. Nothing wrong with that.
Abuzar @ Nov 24th 2007 2:58PM
If you have the money just buy a MUCH more powerful desktop. I don't see dual 8800GTX on these laptops.
Zadillo @ Nov 24th 2007 3:07PM
I think the big benefit of laptop gaming would come for someone who went to a lot of LAN parties, etc. I tried going to a couple, but honestly found the hassle of transporting my desktop tower and monitor and keyboard and mouse and cables to really not be worth it. If I did that a lot, I can definitelys ee preferring to have a nice gaming laptop that I could transport instead.
Outside of that though, for someone who needs a laptop primarily for work, etc. a gaming laptop usually doesn't have the portability or battery life to make it worthwhile. And for someone who doesn't need portability, there isn't necessarily a ton of benefit to a gaming laptop vs. their normal desktop.
ethana2 @ Nov 24th 2007 4:56PM
clock and voltage throttling
clock gating
process size
That's what I'm looking at. I see no reason why you can't have power when you need it and battery when you don't. Can't ACPI handle that kind of thing?
UFG @ Nov 25th 2007 11:09PM
Um, "LAN" and "party" really don't belong in the same sentence anymore.
It's 2007.
Pixelantes Anonymous @ Nov 24th 2007 11:25PM
I know this is the Intertubes and all and that people always seem to know exactly what other people should or should not do and how they go about living their lives.
The thing about gaming laptops is different strokes for different folks.
I own an expensive gaming laptop (Clevo M570U) and I couldn't be happier with it. I know it's about twice as expensive as a comparable gaming desktop, HOWEVER since I live in a small NYC apartment, I simply do NOT have the space for a big gaming desktop and the monitor I'd have to get for it. I don't have the deskspace and I don't have the floorspace for it. I can also take the laptop with me anywhere I go when I travel for business.
This particular laptop looks really hot, but the price is completely ridiculous. If it's a Clevo chassis, you can get the same specs from a shop that assembles no-brand versions of Clevo laptops probably slightly less than $3K.
Ricardo @ Nov 24th 2007 2:48PM
Why buy this when you can buy a better desktop computer for like half the price?
It's not like someone would need the mobility, because who needs that buys a 13-14" notebook, not a 17" one.
Zadillo @ Nov 24th 2007 3:09PM
Mobility is relative. Yes, someone who needs true mobility for a laptop won't be looking at this. but someone who goes to a lot of LAN parties/etc. would benefit from this, as a 17" gaming laptop is still a lot easier to transport around than a desktop tower/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc.

buy a eee pc and with the remainder buy one year's(?) worth of beer. or alternatively one can also buy about 12 ps3's and can built a mini super computer!
js @ Nov 24th 2007 3:14PM
Supercomputers that can run Doom and play Crysis simulatenously?

lol @ dollar

I was about to make a witty remark about the falling value of the dollar, and then I saw this. Very, very well played; thanks for the laugh.
deniz @ Nov 24th 2007 3:22PM
that laptop can run crysis faster than my desktop. what a world...
Charles Han @ Nov 24th 2007 3:33PM
Man other than the graphic card this laptop is equivalent to other laptops around 1500 that have 8600m. Does 8800 gtx justify almost 3000 dollar markup for a single graphic card? I guess its good idea like the reviewer said to wait for other laptops to get their hands on the card cause this is total rip off.
Tangarie @ Nov 24th 2007 3:58PM
I could definitely use this ! :-D Yes indeed
Thomas Letterio @ Nov 24th 2007 4:02PM

Yeah, but you'll never buy 12PS3's with 2grand in the UK.. I dunno I'm interested in getting a Rock Laptop, I'm in college and want a powerful machine.. but I'd likely pick up a lower end Rock Laptop. Rock are a pretty cool brand though you seem to get a lot more for your money than with Alienware.

Anybody notice the random icons in the middle of the desktop on this photo? Seriously xtreme 770, if you're gonna get you're portrait taken, clean yourself up a little.

A factor of two would mean that this lappie is one hundred times faster than the competition. Factors are a power of ten.

I hate to make an obvious plug, but I wonder how Compiz Fusion would look on this. Framerates are astounding with my GeForce Go 7300 in 1680x1050@32bpp, but on this? One can only imagine. This is why Vista is awesome, it's pushing the envelope of affordability of high-end graphics hardware - now us Linux users can get better kit for less green! Now if only the M$ tax refund was easier to get
