Dell's 15.4-inch XPS M1530 multimedia powerhouse available on-line -- starts at $999
Thar she blows! Dell's mysterious XPS M1530 is up live and dancing on Dell's Singapore site. With any luck, she'll be struttin' that 15.4-inch, 1440 x 900 CCFL (not LED-backlit) display, HDMI-out and optional slot-loading Blu-ray Disc and 64GB SSD Stateside by morning. This XPS powerhouse packs up to a 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo T7800 processor, 256MB of NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics, 4GB DDR2 memory, and either a 7200RPM 200GB or 5400RPM 320GB SATA disk. Rounding things out are 802.11n WiFi (with built-in WiFi catcher), Bluetooth 2.0, 2 megapixel webcam, and optional HSDPA or EVDO cards. It's even sporting a panel of touch-sensitive, capacitive controls for your media. Thing is, that rumored 4-pound weight is 5.78-pounds in reality -- more if you opt for the 9-cell battery. Still, that weight was always a bit too good to be true for a fully-spec'd, 15-inch laptop.
Update: Ooops, the Singapore site is down (gone?). No worries, the site is up in Germany, France, and the UK.
Update 2: Dell's US site is now hot. Prices start at $999 for the "good" configuration on up to $1,499 for "best." Oh my, and the display has been rolled back to just 1,280 x 800. Why so stingy with the pixels Dell?
[Thanks, Stuart]

Meh, shove Crysis down this thing's throat and it will choke.
brando_commando @ Nov 27th 2007 3:44PM
hmm ... no SSD at the official site ??? that's what i've been waiting for. will they be adding more options?
Lee Lovell @ Nov 27th 2007 1:38AM
Not first! Put that in your pipe and.... ah, nevermind. *walks off in shame*
Looks like a midstream competitor to HP's 15 inch lineup.
BigDaddyM @ Nov 27th 2007 2:08AM
I want this in a 12inch form factor and I am sold...

jakfoood @ Nov 27th 2007 2:27AM
the closest you'll get is the m1330.
BigDaddyM @ Nov 27th 2007 2:40AM
I did look at that already, but it doesn't have a HD option for the optical drive otherwise I may have already ordered one... I have been thinking about the Sony TZ which is 11 inches but also no HD drive and much slower, but then it would be really portable, however, they force Sprint for the cellular option when I want AT&T... Fujitsu has some interesting options but for some reason I just do not bite with them...

Just another medicore Dell with some style and probably overpriced -- ahh , its an XPS you say ?
cmonkey @ Nov 27th 2007 2:09AM
Meh, 15.4" and only 1440x900? Stick a 1650x1050 panel and a stronger graphics card in it and it'll make a nice gaming laptop (that will also probably melt a hole through your lap, in addition to your wallet).
Zeus the God @ Nov 27th 2007 2:12AM
Yeah, fuck that for a gaming laptop with that 8400 chip. The 8400 sucks, and with something like that in here, how can you call it a power house?
Peter D. Lai @ Nov 27th 2007 2:49AM
If you click on the Tech Specs tab, one of the available options for Graphics is "256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT".
jonathan @ Nov 27th 2007 11:13AM
I've been using the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT in my Dell Vostro to play the hell out of Team Fortress 2. Granted, even at high settings TF2 isn't super intensive, but the card handles it very well regardless.
RyanTV @ Nov 27th 2007 1:19PM
I'm with you... the only way i'm going to consider getting this is if they put a better LCD in it. Why does my year old Inspiron have a 1680x1050 LCD in it and this one cant?
Ypoknons @ Nov 27th 2007 2:17AM
At this weight, the Macbook Pro pretty much out specs it. Lighter (5.2 ibs) with a 8600GT (much much faster), LED backlit screen. On the other hand, you can get a 2MP webcam and Bluray,SSD, 3G wireless and a 320GB hard drive as options where you can't on the MBP.
tau zero @ Nov 27th 2007 2:28AM
yes but its also $2000+
Peter D. Lai @ Nov 27th 2007 2:52AM
Someone needs to edit the article... there are two options for this notebook in the graphics department:
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
128MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GS
There is no option for "256MB of NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GT graphics" like the post says.
biohazard1067 @ Nov 27th 2007 2:35PM
Actually the MBP does have a 2 megapixel webcam. The latest gen does anyway, it's just not a well known fact.
Ypoknons @ Nov 27th 2007 5:03AM
Actually, a 256MB 8600GT puts on parity with a Macbook Pro. I'm willing to bet screen brightness and build quality aren't up to the same level, but this makes the M1530 much more appealing.
emehrkay @ Nov 27th 2007 8:38AM
It is worse than that. On the US site the res says 1200 X 800. ON a 15 inch screen that is the worst. Now my 15 inch is running 1600 x 1050, I refuse to go less. I would consider buying this XPS if the resolution were upped
Robert @ Nov 29th 2007 9:53PM
I called Dell the day it came out and explained that I was buying a laptop that day and I had been waiting for the m1530 to be released and that I was expecting a LED back lit screen, non glossy and a better resolution that what was offered. The rep attempted to explain that the LED was not better. I then stated that I didnt really want a MAC book Pro but I would go ahead and purchase a MAC. He placed me on hold and then came back on and asked if I could wait 4 days. I said I may be able to why? He said that the LED will be an option then and to call him back at his direct line when I see that option online and I can get 300 dollars off. Anyway so hold your horses guys, its coming!
tau zero @ Nov 27th 2007 2:26AM
for an XPS, they should have made the screen available in a 1920x1200 panel. And i know they can, because thier presision notebooks sport that same type of panel.
Travis Tomlinson @ Nov 27th 2007 3:17AM
anyone have a link for the m1530?
kyle @ Nov 27th 2007 3:21AM
price?
sillyrabbit @ Nov 27th 2007 3:57AM
isnt the T7700 2.4 Ghz?

Only 1440 x 900 on a 15.4" screen? I was really hoping this would be a 1680x1050 screen. :(
James @ Nov 28th 2007 4:41AM
On the UK site its 1280x800! Very disappointing, it really needs WXGA+.

It only lists one screen option: 1280x800. What is up with that?
Kasper @ Nov 27th 2007 9:30AM
I'm from Denmark too. Yeah i saw it only came with a screen with that resolution.
I were hoping on a screen with at least 1440*900 screen resolution.
Great computer but that resolution is'nt okay.

+ $500 for the Blu-ray drive? Crap-tacular.
Frankintroll @ Nov 27th 2007 9:11AM
The lcd isn't even LED Backlite like the 1330.... What's up with that?
Migizi @ Nov 27th 2007 9:14AM
I checked the Dell EPP site today and it said that the screens on the 1530 are the same as the 1330 for size. It has to be a typo or that would be one stupid 1530.
blomster @ Nov 27th 2007 9:21AM
Somebody please give me a slim notebook with a non-glossy screen! ARGH!
Ypoknons @ Nov 28th 2007 8:31PM
Macbook Pro
blomster @ Nov 30th 2007 10:21AM
Yes, I might go with the MBP. Too bad I'd have to spend the extra money for a copy of Windows and a cooling pad.
Jonathan Bergeron @ Nov 27th 2007 9:27AM
Dell MediaDirect is horrible. absolutely horrible.
Andrew @ Nov 27th 2007 10:03AM
Props to Dell for making something in this form factor so well priced, but honestly what is the point of a 'media' lappy that can't even utilize all the pixels the tasty blu-ray puts out? HDMI out though, THAT is something I would love on my MBP.
thethirdmoose @ Nov 27th 2007 7:16PM
dude... DVI and HDMI are exactly the same
ark_v2 @ Nov 27th 2007 11:04AM
The big bro of my m1330. I still like this size and form factor XD.
Mark @ Nov 27th 2007 11:30AM
wtf ... 1200 X 800 is the best resolution?
NO THANKS! AT LEAST give me 1440x900 with an option for glossy or matte.
and the $1,499 for "best" option SUCKS.
the Vostro 1500 blows this away .. albeit at the cost of looking ugly.
Manny @ Nov 27th 2007 12:07PM
No thanks! I'm going to wait for Dell's upcoming m1340 with Intel's new Montevina processor. This platform design will be smaller, faster, more efficient (i.e. longer battery life), and have WiMax. It'll be out in 2008 Q2 (no more than 6 months from now). Can't wait!
Meldon @ Nov 27th 2007 12:59PM
I am not sure why, but Dell.ca has much lower prices than Dell.com,
and that is the opposite of normal, by a lot. And I am not just
talking about an exchange rate difference, its like 300$ on the same
configuration.
The Blu-ray drive is only 300$ extra, unlike the 500$ on the US site.
Here is the config:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7500
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms)
250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8600M GT
Slot Load Blu -ray Disc (BD/DVD/CD read/write)
Intel Next -Gen Wireless -N Mini -card
Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0+Enhanced Data Rate), for XPSM1530
Dell BH200 Bluetooth 2.0 EDR Stereo Headset, VOIP Capable
6-cell Primary Battery and 9 -cell additional Lithium Ion Battery
Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy HD Software Edition
And also surprising, the XPS 1530 debuted on Dell.ca at the same time
as Dell.com, a first as far as I can remember.
Times are changing...
Meldon @ Nov 27th 2007 1:03PM
Forgot to add, the Dell.ca amount is CA$2039.00 and the Dell.com price is US$2304.00
ark_v2 @ Nov 27th 2007 1:37PM
Same in Mexico, it's here too.
Drew @ Nov 27th 2007 1:04PM
I wonder why the poor resolution? My one and a half year old Dell Inspiron E1505 has a 15.4" 1680x1050 screen!
