Stay At Home Servers out to shatter the stereotype
We outright asked you how you'd alter Windows Home Server if you had the chance, and thankfully, none of you requested that these no good storage gizmos head right back to the office closet where "they belong." Unfortunately, it seems that not everyone has been able to overlook tradition and see how beneficial a home server can truly be. Legions of such devices are trickling into abodes as we speak, and while some families are rejoicing, others are apparently being torn apart at the notion of such a handsome device setting up shop within the residence. Stay At Home Servers: it's a debate sure to rage on long after the frosty months have passed, but just remember -- a family that stores together, (generally) stays together.
Psst, check out the video in the read link if you're completely befuddled.

that's pretty funny!!
Haha, funny little viral campaign there.
"Are you jealous of the server?"
How would I alter Windows Home Server?
First, I'd drop the "Windows" part.
HAHAHA...
...drop you
How would you alter Michael Jackson?
Gee, I don't know. You really do need to start over, don't you?
Bizarre. Another entry in Microsoft's long line of wierd little videos.
great, fantastic
Meh, Im waiting for the someone over at UHS (Ubuntu Home Server) to get their ass in gear and finally get something put together. Im worried they will end up being all talk (although, I have seen some development) and not release anything and Ill find myself getting a WHS system.
I really do need a home server, with 3 computers, a 360, and a fourth computer on its way. (my personal baby)
You don't need to wait for an Ubuntu Home Server. The desktop distro of Ubuntu does a perfectly fine job as a small home server. I've been running desktop Ubuntu as a server for about 3 years now, and it's been perfectly fine. Mine currently functions as a file server, along with Apache and MySQL, and also streams media all around my house. All it takes is a little configuring- and fine, maybe configuring is harder than with WHS, but it means you have a *lot* more flexibility. Without a RAID card, I still had complete control over software RAID, and the flexibility of file permissions and access control is unrivalled
I dont know. My linux experience is limited, and they are promising a great interface and CP for UHS.
If I get bored with my holiday toys, I might give it a try.
Im just not sure I could configure it quite right, and I just want it to be a stand alone box that can network with all of my Windows PCs and my Nokia770.
Ill have to wait and see.
freenas or openfiler then?
both easy as hell to configure and use
then again ubuntu with webmin is also easy to configure and run
Ew, I chuckled at a Stephen Colbert wannabe viral Microsoft ad. There's not a long enough, hot enough shower to wash away the shame.
Serveers beloong in the ooofiiiice. >=C
Naw. I had one, but it died. Just a little Windows 2000 server under my bed. I'd put it back together with Ubuntu, but the command line portion of that scares me.
