First OLPC XOs from G1G1 ship today
At the nexus of selfishness and altruism sits the OLPC Give One, Get One program. Today marks the first day of shipping for those of you who placed a G1G1 order during the program's November 12th launch date. Each XO ships with new OLPC Ship.2 Build (650) software which introduces a network-based OLPC-update and more robust wireless networking in addition to the same (great) Sugar UI and easy-to-use application suite we've seen. They'll also arrive touting the latest Q2D07 firmware which fixes a critical bug bricking some XOs in manufacturing. As noted earlier, these units should arrive before Christmas while the second XO heads to less-fortunates in early 2008. As it should be, eh you greedy/selfless bastage.[Via OLPC News, thanks Wayan]

Some of us aren't such greedy bastards! The one I receive is immediately being send to a friend in the Peace Corp in Niger. When her tour is up she'll leave it in the village. The only thing I'm getting out of the deal is a few days to play with the XO, an opportunity to show it off to my techie friends and to help support this great project!

Ditto, mine is on its way to Ghana in January with some people my parents met while they were there visiting the child they sponsor. So I'll have a couple of days to play then its off. I'm stoked.

I can't wait to play with this laptop. Its my kid's (girl 7) gift for xmas along with a note explaining how the gift also helped a little kid with his alada pdf training manuals :)

I ordered 1 for my daughter also. I'm curious to know if the web browser is fully functional. She plays alot of games online (playhouse disney, nick jr. etc.) If anyone knows the capabilities, I would like to hear about it. Thanks.

You can go to the site, and download a image of the software to play with on a virtual machine. It is pretty good, I played with it a while ago, and cant remember if the browser had flash capabilities or not, and if not, im sure it would come soon.

I played with one at the Wired store on Soho over the weekend. I wasn't too impressed. I was expecting more. The software wasn't all that easy to use and it was difficult to type. I'm glad I didn't participate in the program.
