eeeXubuntu: Ubuntu distilled for your Eee
For all you Eee users out there who've been trying to squeeze Ubuntu into the little white box, some help is on the way. A kind and enterprising Linux enthusiast has used their precious time and energy to put together an Eee-customized build of the much-loved OS, which includes fully-integrated hardware support, native wireless drivers, functioning Ethernet support, tweaks for low-resolution desktop environments, and a bunch of other little enhancements that will make using Canonical's powerhouse a lot more pleasant on your tiny laptop. Word on the street is that development and refinement continues on the build, so expect improvements as time wears on. Now, if only someone could perfect that Amiga OS build for the Eee...

I need just 3 programs for my Eee.
Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer and DOOM.
Alexander @ Dec 13th 2007 1:18PM
OpenOffice.org, Firefox, and hundreds of ports.
Stop being a sheep. Start being a Linux Zelot. We have beer. No paperclips allowed.

You can always install Word using WINE - I just got that setup on another computer running Ubuntu and it works great.
jus10 @ Dec 13th 2007 1:28PM
No no, he said Word not Office! :)
Abiword, Firefox (or Opera which has nifty fit-to-page goodness), and lxdoom.
Although I play quake3 on mine.

Being a Linux Zelot is great. Join us. You know you want to...All the cool nerds are doing it. (and yes, as Alexander said, we have beer, and lots of it...It's a lot easier to buy when you're not throwing your money away on operating systems and the insane hardware to support them).

This is fun... but most of my converts these days are offline.
Gotta love laptops running compiz fusion ^_^
Also - unlimited free linux-related support, advice, etc. via email, my usual offer:

Why not just name the distro Eeebuntu?
Semantix @ Dec 13th 2007 1:04PM
I like that, but I'm guessing it's EeeXubuntu so that it's obvious that it's based on Xubuntu and not Ubuntu.
How about Xeeebuntu? (Chee-boon-too)?
Argot @ Dec 13th 2007 1:21PM
I dunno, I'm thinking that's not enough E's.
My suggestion: "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeebuntu" Or, and this may look a little crazy, why not: "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeebuntu"? Huh?
Randavance @ Dec 13th 2007 4:40PM
Realistically it probably is based off the core of Ubuntu and not Xubuntu. But it looks like it's using the Xubuntu panel so I assume it's running many of its similar components and it just made sense for the name.
When it's for one machine with predictable specs a Linux distro is not too hard as long as you're experienced, it's when you get into multiple possibilities and a desire for it to "just work" that things get messy. (This is not to put the creator down at all, this is great work). I wouldn't be surprised if this were all originally for his own personal use and then realized one day that someone else might enjoy it too.

hello45044 @ Dec 23rd 2007 5:48PM
This Isn't actually its own "distribution", its just a fancy configuration of Xubuntu, to save you a lot of time.
I agree with Xeebuntu. :)

"Churn on SSD devices is at-best superstitiously bothersome, and at-worst harmful."
I'll stick with the default xandros until someone can confirm that my ssd wont be thrashed so much that it dies in a year or two.
tiuk @ Dec 13th 2007 1:50PM
Figured this would happen. Love the F/OSS community.
tamoghno @ Dec 13th 2007 2:26PM
but most importantly -- "will it run Compiz Fusion" without messing with drivers ?
hello45044 @ Dec 23rd 2007 5:48PM
Do you realize how slow compiz-fusion would run on this thing?
ethana2 @ Jan 11th 2008 3:43PM
Depends on how many effects you use. If you only use one, and it does have some form of 3d acceleration, hey-- this isn't like, Aero. Integrated is fine. New is great.
200 glxgears fps should be sufficient. (if it isn't our benchmark, what /is/?)
Go for jiggly windows and translucency. I'd avoid the cube.
Olu O @ Dec 13th 2007 2:32PM
it looks ugly
ethana2 @ Jan 11th 2008 3:47PM
yarr. It would have made a funny 'that's what she said'... then i realized it's kind of a back at you situation. Still. ...anyone else watch The Office? ^_^
sean @ Dec 13th 2007 3:00PM
Why try to shoehorn Xubuntu into that when PuppyLinux already fits? And works faster?
...and doesn't require you re-install anything?
hello45044 @ Dec 23rd 2007 5:48PM
Because Ubuntu is cool! :D
Joe_Templeman @ Jan 3rd 2008 5:01PM
I agree, and the original version is based on debian so it uses a fair few of the same technologies/code anyways..

...Or spend the time and energy to make the eee's default Xandros work / view as well as it should.
The basics are there, but few seem to be taking the time to fix it, least of all ASUS - instead simply installing another OS.
eeeXubuntu may be swell, but why should we feel a need to replace the current distro?
Oh, and please include a repo of truly useful software tweaked to the eee, rather than just the dodgy patches and dev software ASUS is producing...

again, Amiga only runs on PPC!!!

The open source, Amiga OS3.1 API compatible AROS will soon be running on the EEE PC.
The bounty for this work is here;

The home of AROS (which incidently is x86, amd-64) is here;
