I sent my first MBP back because I thought it had a duff keyboard (hardware). The replacement was not much better (if at all), so I decided that the problems were probably soft and would be fixed. The recent keyboard firmware update seems to have fixed the 'first character missing' problem, but my MBP often still misses the second strike of a double letter and odd random single characters. Somebody at Apple must know what this is all about - Please fix it!
