Eee PC gets modded with a touchscreen
We've seen a couple sweet Eee PC mods, but this seamless addition of a touchscreen is probably the best so far. It looks like this particular Eee is running XP, and the $60 eBay-sourced car touchscreen our enterprising hacker bolted on seems to work seamlessly with both pen and finger. Check the full vid after the break.

Now he just needs to convert it to flip screen.
Lucas Schafer @ Dec 19th 2007 9:17PM
LoL
Ryan @ Dec 19th 2007 9:27PM
Wow, that's really, really cool. That'd also be nice to see if it were mass produced, though I guess it'd be a very niche market.
Ipaq3115 @ Dec 19th 2007 9:31PM
Wow... I wonder how much that would sell for on eBay...
Bang @ Dec 19th 2007 9:32PM
How about a bigger screen AND make it a flip screen? :)
MaGiXX @ Dec 19th 2007 9:33PM
^^^ Sorry, Stupid AI Roboform saved my last comment.
It look nice and cosmetically usable. Wish they hack a 1.8" HDD into it next.
Grant @ Dec 19th 2007 9:37PM
i get the feeling a HDD would make the decent battery life drop to a shit number.
john @ Dec 20th 2007 8:27AM
someone did, but the drive was too big to fit in the case
austin @ Dec 19th 2007 9:34PM
this is completely relevant.
NOT
i make a not joke, VERY NICE
The Dude @ Dec 19th 2007 9:37PM
Awesome mod, although I think:
a) If you're running the UXTheme patch, you may as well be running a 3rd party visual style that maximizes screen real-estate. That start button is fat as fuck.
b) I hope that was a 2-in-1 stylus and pen and not just a retracted ball point pen. If you've got $60 to spend on a touch-screen on eBay, drop $3 for a proper stylus.
jd @ Dec 19th 2007 9:45PM
FYI
the pen came with the touch screen,so naturally it is made for use on the touch screen, stewpig
Nekiruhs @ Dec 19th 2007 9:52PM
Its not a Hacked UXTheme.dll, its the Microsoft Zune theme by Microsoft. Its signed so it runs w/o the hacked dll. I'm using it right now, its pretty good.
Isaac @ Dec 19th 2007 9:40PM
Holy EEE batman! It has a touch screen!
Ayle @ Dec 19th 2007 9:45PM
Now find a xga 7" screen...
Josh @ Dec 19th 2007 9:58PM
i would like to see a screen that actually fills up that panel first... seems only proper with all of that space around the current screen that someone jack around with it and get a bigger one in there...
ToniCipriani @ Dec 19th 2007 10:16PM
Yes, and it would be so easy to read it...
Ayle @ Dec 19th 2007 11:11PM
True but you'll have to relocate the speakers somewhere else...
JuggleNuts @ Dec 19th 2007 9:46PM
What's the boot-up time for these things? XP or the native OS?
letstakeawalk @ Dec 19th 2007 11:16PM
I've got a 701A 4G that gets to the sign-in screen in 25 seconds. In easy mode, that's completely on. I run mine with the advanced desktop (no real reason, just doesn't look so kid-oriented) which is ready in another 25 seconds with wi-fi already locked onto my router and ready to browse. I think it's pretty quick. I've not modded it at all, yet, and will likely wait a bit, but there are some pretty serious enthusiasts plugging away.

all touchscreens have one problem. user interface. it was designed to work with mouse, not fingers!
look at scrolling on this...and then eg. the iPhone...you don't have to try hit the precious little scrollbar, you just...scroll with your finger...
Ayle @ Dec 19th 2007 11:01PM
....-_-' sigh... And I hoped at least one article about touchscreens would be spared but your kind...
BigD145 @ Dec 19th 2007 11:28PM
What you're talking about is a software issue (the equivalent of a click and hold), not a hardware issue. FYI, the iPhone has a touchscreen.
kr @ Dec 19th 2007 10:25PM
I wants.

so....tired...of....hearing.....about....the....eee....
you could just buy a $430 dell, and the 12" powerbook is just as "mini-like" if you know what i mean. Well, it sort of is. But I'm really tired of two stories about this every day.
bob e @ Dec 20th 2007 12:42AM
Nice...
A CHALLENGER APPEARS @ Dec 20th 2007 12:49AM
Id sure love to have one of those.
Cellenin @ Dec 20th 2007 12:53AM
I hope to see more hacks in the future. This might make me buy one.
kevinm @ Dec 20th 2007 1:16AM
The screen doesn't fold down in tablet mode though.
CapWKidd @ Dec 20th 2007 1:59AM
Is it just me, or did anyone else think he was using a voice synth, instead of his real voice? Reminded me of "S.A.M.", from the Atari, early 80's....
John McCloskey @ Dec 20th 2007 9:24AM
Reminded me of a DJ Shadow snippet: "Welcome to Fear, Side Two".
Definitely the same voice. ;-)
blarvh @ Dec 20th 2007 1:36PM
Nope just Finnish, common misconception.
Joe @ Dec 20th 2007 4:11AM
Running Vista, surely?
VitaminCM @ Dec 20th 2007 5:40AM
This is awesome. I'll take two.
szamot @ Dec 20th 2007 10:35AM
Actually the Eee reminds me of 3COM Audrey. While it was not a lappy but a network appliance that never took off, you could buy it on eBay for next to nothing and that too had a touch screen, a pen and a keyboard, plus a dedicated cohort of hackers making it better than what it originally was.
ThePete @ Dec 20th 2007 2:56PM
That is impressive, but what's with that huge keyboard down there? Why bother with a touchscreen if you don't have a tablet mode?
CubeGuy @ Dec 21st 2007 6:51PM
My old touchscreen laptop was rather useless. I never used the feature.
splitsecond @ Dec 28th 2007 7:15AM
yay
