Averatec shows off 12.1-inch 2500 laptop
Unless you've got a thing for interestingly designed lids, Averatec's latest portable isn't likely to impress. Sure, it's sporting a modest 2GHz AMD Turion 64 processor, 160GB hard drive, a dual-layer DVD burner, 2GB of RAM, ATI's Radeon X1270 graphics set, a 1.3-megapixel webcam and Windows Vista, but chances are you've already dozed off after reading that, haven't you? Granted, it does tip the scales at just 3.9-pounds, but even that -- combined with those hella cool palm rest stickers -- can't ratchet this one beyond ho hum.

Count me in when those figures are no longer static and instead move around like bacteria under a microscope.

I dig the pattern, a lot. Merry Christmas!

I was about to say the same thins, though it reminds me of an antique couch.
But Merry Christmas! I'm sitting in my living room watching the Yule Log (it's this American tradition where we play footage of a fire burning on our TVs as an id fulfilling culmination of the month long nonstop holiday specials)

We actually have fire going in 2 fireplaces!

I use the Averatech 2300, And love it. I like the upgrade to ati x1270. What The article doesn't address is that Averatechs are very inexpensive. I picked up mine for $800.

I had an Averatec 12" laptop about 6 years ago, bought from Wal-Mart. It was fine, everything worked fine, except the fan started to make weird noises (like the spin wasn't true), so I returned it. It was cheap and didn't look too bad either. I say give it a try!

Am not sure why the article is knocking the unit--sounds pretty nice to me, depending on the pricepoint.
Odell @ Dec 25th 2007 10:33AM
I was thinking the same thing. I guess unless something is bleeding edge its boring. This unit would be plenty useful for 90% of computer users out there, depending on the price.

Can it play Battlefield? what about counterstrike/garry's mod
Willy @ Dec 25th 2007 7:18PM
considering the seperate graphics card instead of the usual intergrated, I'd say it could play those games. Just not that well

Hmm... I work at a place where we service various computers. I'm absolutely shocked at the number of Avaratecs that come in needing some sort of hardware fix. Almost every single one has had keys that fell off, fans that have failed, and/or a power supply plug that has shattered. And with each one of those, an unhappy customer who constantly rants about how they will never buy anything with the Avaratec name on it ever again.
I think no matter what, I'm gonna heed those customer's "advice" and stay away. :)

I had an Averatec once....and I never will again.
Merry Christmas!

Man, why can't some other good company make a laptop with a paisley print on the top. Paisley is my favourite.
Richard @ Dec 25th 2007 5:38PM
You can freely purchase glossy laptop artwork stickers in a wide variety of themes in computer shops and on ebay now.

That's one great looking laptop, made me want to ditch my Sony VAIO...

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
i have an averatec3200, its kind of my second laptop. i use it when i don't want to lug my 15.4 dell around. it works great. only compliant is the battery can be short depending on what your doing(average 2-2.5hr). this looks kind of cool. i might be interested. i like the pick up of an ati video card because the averatec i have has a knock off card in it. and it doesn't really do anything except web browseing and document editing/writing. which for a laptop that size is all i really want anyways. a few games would be nice. im not a big vista fan, i would prolly remove it and put a copy of xp pro on it.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

I'm typing this on my Averatec 1050eb1. Asside from the USB ports only being 1.1 and the fact that I can't get the cpu to speedstep in ubuntu, I love the thing. For the price I can overlook a few things. I like the look of the paisley, and if the price and size are small, I'd overlook the performance.
I think it'd be a good sized and stylish travel machine.
Happy Holidays!

this computer isn't spec'd bad at all, is it because its averatec that your downing it? i mean 3.9 pounds with 2ghz, 2gb ram and 160gb isn't that bad at all? and i kind of like the design, but who knows thats me :)
