Three boring laptop companies with three boring laptops. I'm waiting for new Thinkpads/Macbooks, myself (X62s/t?).
sz: Carbon fibre, 2 video cards to be able to switch back and forth, good screen, and great battery life.
what exactly is boring about these compared to the Macbooks and Thinkpads?
Thinkpad's have had carbon fibre and anti-shock HDD protection before Sony. Sony are followers. The X-series Thinkpad's have some of the best battery life around - and if this new SZ has better, it's only due to Penryn vs Merom (low-voltage "Centrino Pro" C2D's found in the X61s). It is sad that my X61s has 802.11n while this Sony does not. Basically they've taken the same old SZ series and slapped in a new CPU - hardly innovative.
So, what's boring about it? It's already been done (better), except for the included Penryn. Lenovo innovates/creates new things, and so does Apple.
Since we're talking about companies (laptop division), how about LED screens? switchable video cards?
also Sony Vaios do have an n card. Check the SonyStyle website and check out the SZ laptops.
and since we're talking about hardware, nothing about Macbooks or Macbook Pros impresses me. Operating system, great, but hardware, no.
OLED is something that will become common on ALL laptops, it's a technology that's been around for a while now, so while its breaking into the mainstream may impress you, it doesn't impress me. For new laptops it's a no-brainer. Switchable video cards... one of the most ridiculous concepts I've heard about in a while. Buy/use a damn desktop if that's the kind of machine you want. I'm more than happy with X3100 anyway (I work, and I don't have much time or interest for games). When you start looking at a laptop as a tool and not a toy, such silliness as switchable video cards becomes far less relevant. Sony is simply continuing its legacy of being notoriously overrated!
I agree that laptops should be though of as a tool and not a toy, but are switchable video cards a toy? Hardly. The integrated video is great for prolonged battery life, while the dedicated is required for video editing and casual gaming. And if you say this isn't an important feature I would remind that the video game industry is larger than the film industry.
As for Macbooks and Lenovos, I would never buy either. Macbooks are too heavy and the white version attracts all sorts of stains. Lenovos are great business machines but their styling is stuck back in the 1980s and I for one have moved on.
As for Sony not innovating, what about Macbook keyboard which is blatantly ripped off and earlier Sony model? In any case I'd prefer a smooth refinement to a bleeding edge innovation any day.
