Samsung cranks out 1080p, flash camcorders

Not exactly in the market for an LCD HDTV, HTIB, or PDP? Or maybe you're just not concerning yourself with all those fancy acronyms. Whatever the case may be, Samsung is wrapping up its CES outpouring with four new camcorders, and we'll get things started by checking out the Full HD SC-HMX20C:

• Captures video in progressive Full HD 1080p, selectable for 30fps or 60fps
• HDMI-CEC (Anynet+), camcorder control using a Samsung HDTV remote
• 8GB of internal flash memory; SDHC / MMC+ expansion slot1
• 1/8-inch 6.4-megapixel CMOS sensor
• 10x optical zoom
• 300fps slow-motion recording mode for up to 10 seconds
• 4-megapixel still image capture
• 2.7-inch wide LCD touchscreen display
• iCheck button for easy access to memory / battery levels
• USB 2.0 and PictBridge connections
• Component, S-Video and composite outputs

Got a hankering for a flash-based camcorder? Look no further, as the SC-MX20 ($299; August 2008) is likely just the thing:

• Compact shoot-and-share flash memory camcorder
  
• Schneider lens with 34X optical zoom
• Records 720x480i video using H.264
  
• 2.7-inch wide LCD touchscreen display
• USB 2.0 and PictBridge connectivity
• Advanced image stabilizer and 3D Noise Reduction (3DNR)
• iCheck button for easy access to memory / battery levels

Not really into flash? How about DVDs? If we just rang your bell, check out the SC-DX103 ($299; April):

• Point-and-shoot camcorder with full dual-layer DVD (-+R / -+RW) recording

• Records in 720x480 at 30fps

Wrapping things up is the low-end SC-D382 ($199; March 2008), which utilizes those handy MiniDV tapes and skimps on the fancy stuff:

• Hidden internal battery to reduce chassis size
• Included remote control and built-in light for added versatility

The specs look good, until you remember that you might only get around 40 minutes of video on the internal memory. You will need to invest in a large number of 8 GB flash sticks if you want to take your holiday videos with this. Of course this is assuming that you want to record everything at top quality.

I'll wait until they either increase the internal flash storage considerably, or increase the size of flash memory sticks. Or both...

You don't need HDMI... you're supposed to transfer the videos to a computer, edit & retouch them, burn on a BD or HD DVD and watch on a player that has HDMI out... or transfer them to an HTPC with HDMI out... but not watch them directly from the camera, the outputs it haves are just for preview..

According to Gizmodo, the top end unit DOES have HDMI-CEC (aka Samsung Anynet+) when used with an included Docking Station. (Charges and provides HDMI and Component out)

They also mentioned if you have a Samsung TV that the remote for the TV will easily control the Camcorder as well.

A quick google for this unit reveals Samsung has not yet released the Price on it.

Step directly from Digital8 - six years of best editing in my life - to SDHC....may be the best rec/editing video EVER for the rest of my life ( except they don't sell the HD holografic videos during my life , ha ha ha ...)

This device is almost extraterestrial...superergonomic, you can use all the functions with only one finger (no joking), and the other hand can grab a beer or a hamburger...or whatever you want ..:-)
