Hitachi had to hack it to produce a 500GB 2.5-inch laptop drive, adding another platter (and a few millimeters thickness) that make their new
5K500 impossible to install in most standard laptops and enclosures -- but not Samsung. The Spinpoint M6 500GB drive brings a half terabyte at the standard 9.5mm height, and should land some time in March, meaning your current laptop -- and not just those
new Asus machines -- should be able to accommodate one or two of these massive mothers.

This is perfect for almost all the data-keepers around (Including me) and the best companion for a MacBook.
Now, if the could build an ATA-6 version of this (For my PBG4), I'll be the happiest guy on earth,

As they say in counterstrike: Hitachi PWNZORD!
Wolfticket @ Jan 6th 2008 3:48PM
Hitachi always cheat by adding extra platters in order to get firsts. Shame on you Hitachi. SHAME ON YOU.

and the gods shone down from the heavens a ray of light pointing to our savior, the 500 gig laptop hard drive that will fit into any and all laptops of today. And a chorus was sung and the people rejoiced.

This sounds great, but after the SNAFU that was the HM-250JI line.. I'll wait and not be a guinea pig this time. After tons of trying things suggested online and updating firmware, I got tired of multiple hangs on my MBP per week. I eventually had to give up on the 250gig drive and went for a 200gig Hitachi that's been flawless. Lots of people out there had issues, even after doing the firmware update.
That drive was the first thing from Samsung I've ever had any issue with, so hopefully it was a fluke. Would love to have that much storage... pushing limits of the 200gig disk already.

The REAL question is: how much will it cost? Cause I was about to buy the Western Digital Scorpio 320GB hard drive, but maybe I should wait?
Asger @ Mar 5th 2008 3:06PM
I might even be faster that the 320Gb spinpoint, which is currently just as fast as the 7200rpm/200Gb drives acording to Tomshardwareguide.com - I sure hope so.
Yes it will be my next update for a macbook.

It says they started shipping out on 03/06/08, but I can't find them anywhere. Anybody else have any luck?
@ Mark -- they ARE 7200 rpm
Dan Davis @ Apr 2nd 2008 9:18AM
Dammit... they DO spin @ 5400... my apologies.
This would still go great in a PS3.
Dan Davis @ Apr 1st 2008 11:13AM
Check that, they began shipping on March 4th, not the 6th.
