Fujitsu's LOOX U50XN now configurable with 64GB SSD
Fujitsu's marvelously light LOOX U50XN -- better known as the U810 here in the States -- just keeps getting better. Apparently, to-be owners in Japan can now snag one with an oh-so-coveted 64GB SSD, though all the other specs look to remain identical to what we've already seen. 'Course, adding such a fine piece of hardware won't come cheap -- as a matter of fact, you'll be forced to cough up an extra ¥95,000 ($887) for the privilege. Oh, and the unconfirmed word on the street has the new drive option coming stateside in March, but don't bet the farm on that just yet, alright?

Considering the average SONY mini laptop like this would cost around $2000 with a regular hard drive, paying nearly $2000 for this with an SSD drive doesn't really seem so bad.
I'm going to Japan during my trip to the Beijing Olympicsthis summer and I am hoping SSD's get out on the market and get some price drops before then.
Maybe I'll just use my BUSH TAX REBATE to buy it.
;(

the ssd option is still 112$ cheaper than the apple-option for the macbookair ^^ ;)
roach @ Jan 19th 2008 10:36AM
Yeah...take your Apple shot buddy.... It's a shame the Fujitsu $887 upgrade doesn't come with a processor bump like the Apple one does....
Blackster @ Jan 19th 2008 10:39AM
not if you take the smaller version and add the ssd ;)
Reid @ Jan 19th 2008 3:36PM
Dude, way to add an Apple slant to EVERYTHING.
I think it's actually the Apple haters that are annoying themselves by bringing it up in every conversation.
Blackster @ Jan 19th 2008 4:55PM
why? just an observation of two new products ;)

Yeah I think that this is pretty cool, but I'm just not into laptops really. I think I'll wait until I can get 500GB or 1TB hard drives for a laptop. Then I will look into purchasing a laptop, until then I will just stick with my desktop and phone for web on the go.
Aaron @ Jan 19th 2008 10:15AM
You mean like this one: http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/06/samsung-intros-spinpoint-m6-500gb-standard-height-laptop-drive/ ? If so, I assume you'll start looking seriously at laptops in March.
Flashpoint @ Jan 19th 2008 10:15AM
you'll be waiting for 5 years or so.
Ronald @ Jan 19th 2008 11:50AM
No, more like a few months if that, I know some company is about to roll out a 500GB in about 2 months, and the 1TB later this year, hope the price is right though
Denver_80203 @ Jan 19th 2008 10:49AM
Mmmm SSD. 64 GB is enough for OS and Applications. Has anyone seen benchmarking on these things yet beyond marketing claims? ~8-900$ for a 64 GB SSD is far lass than I expected, actually.

Rather, it should be called the "Don't look, I'm fugly"
wushi @ Jan 19th 2008 11:02AM
fuglytsu ftw!
Miniblade @ Jan 19th 2008 11:16AM
ewwww, FUGLY.. I used to like Fujitsu but changed my mind after buying a refurbished unit from Fujitsu. I had to send the unit back for repair(Major problem) 4 times and its still not fixed... And then 3-month warranty expired. DOPE!

If LOOX could kill...

I saw a new gadget recently, a 64Gb SSD with integrated RAID controller. So basically, two 32GB SSD's set up in RAID in one 2.5 inch enclosure.
I'm pretty sure that RAID is the best for SSD's b/c it pretty much doubles performance and makes SSD's a definite plus over HDD in every respect. Seals the deal, amirite?
Mayank Kuswaha @ Jan 19th 2008 1:48PM
must say one more cool gadget :P and much cheaper then apple...
dhlt25 @ Jan 19th 2008 1:56PM
Hmm, Fujistu 64 GB SSD option: $887 premium
Apple 64 GB SSD option: $1200 premium
I understand that there's brand difference here but charging over 40% premium over other brand for the same upgrade option is ridiculous
m @ Jan 20th 2008 1:25AM
one does wonder how apple can charge so much more-- dell also charges an extra $900 for a 64gb ssd. i'm surprised to find fujitsu haters, though... kind of a niche grudge, isn't it? it's not really fair to judge them on a refurbished unit, especially. my fujitsu scansnap s510 is one of the finest machines i have ever owned. it's truly amazing, especially for its price. i'd definitely buy from them again, if their stuff wasn't so hard to find.
wickedpheonix @ Jan 19th 2008 2:32PM
Hmmm.... betting the farm might let me actually afford the SSD upgrade....

I've got a Fujitsu Lifebook and I absolutely love it. It's pushing three years of almost daily use and I have never had a problem.
I would definitely get another Fujitsu notebook - and this U810 looks dope.
Fujitsu is also known as a fairly socially responsible company which is kind of cool too.

What is the minimum sized HD to run Vista on?
Would it be faster to run XP on the smaller drive?
Spencer N @ Jan 20th 2008 2:06AM
@dhlt25 and others . . .
looks like based on apple's site, the ssd option is about 100 dollars more than the fujitsu's option, so 999 not 1200 for the SSD option. included with the 1200 dollar premium is the processor upgrade.
