MiLeap X and Y laptop details get fleshed out
We already had a pretty good indication of the specs for HCL's new low-cost MiLeap X and Y laptops, but those that still haven't had their curiosity satisfied can now get their fix courtesy of PCLaunches, which has the complete rundown on both systems. As expected the lower-end MiLeap X is Classmate PC through and through, including a 900MHz Celeron M processor, 512MB of RAM, 2GB of flash memory, two USB ports, and the usual 7-inch 800 x 600 display. The more UMPC-like MiLeap Y, on the other hand, boasts an Intel A110 processor, 1GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, a 1.3 megapixel webcam and a higher resolution 1024x600 7-inch screen. Still no word on a release date, however, though they sure seem about ready to drop.

HCL is not pushing the product to the market yet .

For X series, HCL has priced heavily.
Actually @ Rs.20,000/- many low end laptops are available with more speed & storage with larger screen.
If you want portable one for mail, ms-office & web, then PDA-Mobile will be better.
The Y model sure looks like a kohjinsa SH / Vye37.....
HCL, bringing 90s technology to you today.
Looks like something Zack Morris would jam.
Dude i think Office n Outlook can easily run on this machine . U connect an external hard drive n then u r takin back up . I can compare this thing to a Pentium!!! desktop machine . I stil got one which easily works with XP home n Office 2000. Also it plays MP3 n Movies . Wot more does a ultra Low Budget Lappy needs to do ???
I know this is for the Indian market, but are they also planning to bring it to the West?
This may stand as a EEE competitor then. I am talking about the Y series!
the UMPC sure looks nice, i would buy one if they didnt get too overpriced.....the classmate is indeed ugly...
just got prices...350 dollars the classmate and 750 dollars the UMPC put or take...
the eee pc is sure much more aesthetic and pretty....
the UMPC is a bit overpriced ...but they all are...
the classmat does look a bit more attractive to me than the OLPC. But it some categories, OLPC also looks better. I really woudn't carew hich one I got.
look about power consumptions of OLPC and classmate...
You'll be gazed with it...
Lets just say that Intel has been giving out gasoline/diesel power generators to the school it equips in africa...hehehe
and OLPC has the mesh network..seems nice...i'd buy one
Has anyone ever tried one of these slider type setups (the UMPC y thing)? It looks like it wouldn't work well for use at a table.
Actually it's a swivel hinge, like most convertible tablet pc's have, which means it also unfolds as a normal laptop.
$350 for the Classmate? You could put down $500 and get a real laptop.
Got a Compaq, new-in-box, over Xmas and its much better then those things.
Don't see the point in putting down that much money for something that looks like crap.
The UMPC looks kind cool though. Wish it was a couple hundred cheaper, and it might be a good idea. At least that one doesn't kill the eyes to look at.
Or am I just missing the target market with these things?
The Classmate isn't really for consumers. It's more for developing countries, and its specs are not so great.
The UMPC is niche unless its price tag is low.
The EEEPC is the only UMPC/MID to hit the right note so far. The advantage to this category of devices is they are small, light, and cheap. They can do basic tasks without costing a fortune (Sony TZ), and are ultraportable.
i really hate that ASUS didnt started shipping EEE PC to Portugal yet...indeed sucks...
