Vista SP1 has already been
previewed, gone through a
Release Candidate cycle, and had a changelog
released -- so all that's left is for Microsoft to hit us with it, right? Not so fast, Sparky -- according to various sources, you're still going to have wait three more weeks to get your hands on that hot SP1 action: circle February 15th on your Ballmer / Gates pinup calendar and start counting the days. Of course, Microsoft isn't confirming anything one way or another other than Q108, so don't get too excited, but after all we've been through together, we can't imagine the Redmond crew not giving us a (late) Valentine's Day present -- we're like, totally serious, right?

That's cool and all but where's my WinXP Sp3?
XGM @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:45PM
Its installed on my MacBook Pro so i can play games, so i don't know what your complaining about. Then again so is Vista SP1 on my friend's PC.
Brendan @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:03PM
Where's my Ballmer/Gates pinup calendar?
Adrian Williams @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:12PM
Have you tried the Beta yet it still needs a lil work I tried on my daughters PC and it shut it down without installing twice
Mark @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:17PM
Good question. I've an install of XP that's slowly grinding to a halt (installed 2003 on a pIII 550 mHz) - has had a bad install of Norton, changed video card drivers a few times (can't seem to get rid of the nVidia special feature centre) and generally been abused beyond all belief. I'm just waiting on SP3 so I can slipstream the service pack and enjoy a fully updated install in ~1.5 hours as opposed to wasting the next two days patching it. C'mon Microsoft - no one who has Vista or is planning to buy it (outside of getting it on the next computer they buy) actually cares about SP1. Give us XP SP3!!!
kle0012 @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:18PM
Probably just holding off a little bit longer so they can steal the thunder of next massive Leopard update.
Iain @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:24PM
Won't the next Leopard update be v10.6, have a new name and cost a few hundred dollars?
kle0012 @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:27PM
Probably, but when Engadget sites that the next dot release is going to contain over a hundred fixes, I'd hardly call that anything less than a pretty major update.
Or maybe just fixing things that should have been right in the first place isn't really major news? Who knows. xD
Bioretention @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:38PM
LOL, yeah. Though for a lot us, a Valentine's Day gift from Microsoft is about as welcome as a note from a stalking ex-boyfriend.

Chris @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:15PM
I personally would enjoy a note from a stalker. Always amusing until the kill you.

"Won't the next Leopard update be v10.6, have a new name and cost a few hundred dollars?"
A few hundred dollars? We're not talking Micro$oft here. An OS X release is only $129.

SPOILER: 10.6 is gonna be named for a cat

Wow...This is just something I've noticed, is it impossible to not mention Apple on a MS article, or vice versa?
zfurie @ Jan 24th 2008 5:15AM
It's like a certain portion of the world:
Death to Microsoft! Death to Apple!
All Morons just hate.
Haxornick89 @ Jan 28th 2008 12:23PM
wow u tard its the new operating system get a friggin brain
Josh @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:33PM
We'll see how it works...maybe I'll consider "upgrading" to Vista after the Service Pack.
Ruben @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:35PM
For me, it was running fine before SP1.
Its been running fine after i installed the beta.
It will be fine after its official release.
Ever since the driver issues were resolved, Vista has been fine for me.
Sam Zebian @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:36PM
That's funny, I just uninstalled the sp1 rc1 cycle 2, because it didn't have my printer drivers or cd drive drivers. I still haven't restarted after the uninstall.
T-Bone @ Jan 24th 2008 1:14AM
Weird. I went to HP's website to download the drivers for my all-in-one and it told me Vista comes with all the proper drivers for it. Everything I've plugged in has worked except for my video card that is pretty much only found on my particular laptop model.
Jonathan Keim @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:36PM
yawn... I'll wait for the reviews before upgrading my Vista
Sauerkraut @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:46PM
I wish apple would release leopard for windows, I own vista ultimate that I snagged off ebay for 120 dollars. 120 dollars too much. I'd rather spend 300 on leopard than use this. XP>Vista. Sure the graphics are nice, but this OS does not make anything simpler; rather more complex.
kle0012 @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:48PM
I think you mean Leopard for PC.
carl @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:06PM
I think he means leopard for non-Apple computers.
Reader @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:51PM
Sweet, maybe I'll finally install Vista on one of my systems. Don't usually bother until a few months after the first SP. I'm excited to finally get a shweet UI (although the Zune UI on xp is pretty nice, nothing like Aero).
Sauerkraut @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:51PM
lol yeah that's a bad error to make
Kevin T. @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:55PM
FWIW, I've heard through a few inside sources that the 'launch date' for Vista SP1 and Server 2008 (And possibly XP SP3 but my sources deal with Vista/2008 exclusively - SP3 may come later) will be Feb 27th. RTM of course could/should be earlier.
ANutt3 @ Jan 23rd 2008 9:56PM
I'm beginning to think I'm the only person on the planet who LOVES Vista. That being said.. I'm definitely ready to get rid of my BSOD.
Jacob @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:15PM
I like Vista too, a few annoyances here and there.
also I like Windows Media Player much better now, itunes seems to be buggy sometimes.
Never seen a BSOD on Vista yet.
Deluxe @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:23PM
I love vista too! I've not had a single problem with drivers, errors or devices.
I have another laptop with XP and it pains me to go back now, heh.
kle0012 @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:24PM
Count me in! I love Vista, to me it represents simplicity and elegance in one neat package.
I haven't had one single problem with Vista itself since I bought it. The one time I did, it was a corrupted boot file, and vista repaired it all for me anyway. =]
I find the best part about everybody wanting XP back is that it's only serving to drive down the prices of Vista anyway.
Jim @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:24PM
I like Vista specifically for Media Center. It looks so much nicer and has more features than Media Center 2005. I couldn't imagine giving up Vista to go back to XP's Media Center with how much I use it in Vista.
Rex @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:27PM
The only BSOD I have seen on Vista was cause by a bad stick of RAM. I haven't had a single one since I replaced the bad stick.
wixostrix @ Jan 24th 2008 3:28AM
I luv vista the day i got it. i had a couple of driver issues b4 and every now and then it gets annoying cuz there are bugs but as time goes bye i get less and less errors and there wasnt even that many to begin with. i couldnt see myself going back to XP 1 week after i was using vista
Mickey Jones @ Jan 24th 2008 1:17PM
Same here. I waited but finally installed it a few weeks ago. No problems at at. Better than XP. But I would have like a more significant upgrade. All the really innovative features were cut. I really can't seen anyone seriously holding on to XP until the next Windows release.
DoctaDJones @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:12PM
Why do they bother releasing this when people can already upgrade to XP?
Dylan K @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:20PM
This, folks, is an example of an original, hilariously witty comment.
Viperbird @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:13PM
Don't worry, I love vista too, that makes two of us! Hasn't been to much of a hassle getting used to it, just got to shut of that darn user account control and its all good. Hope SP1 doesnt mess it up as Microsoft loves to fix things that arent broken (such as XP, even though I do like Vista)
Ryan @ Jan 24th 2008 9:24AM
Why should users pay for updates that are not even a full version?? I never understood that about Apple OS X versions...
Pay $129 for fixes (improvements?)... That's insane.
hayesb2 @ Jan 23rd 2008 10:34PM
Vista is great. I love it. You dont like it, then make something better
adam @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:27PM

Nice Apple add! How much they got paid?
adam @ Jan 24th 2008 3:30AM
Just because you don't want to drink the kool-aid, ii doesn't mean it tastes like crap.
ChrisG @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:40PM
If SP-1 is terrible, then I'm definately switching to Leopard.
T-Bone @ Jan 24th 2008 1:18AM
Vista right now isn't as good as Vista SP1 by definition. Switch now if you want.
Michael LaFramboise @ Jan 23rd 2008 11:46PM
So will SP1 have the new file system along w/ all the other missing features? I just recall Microsoft promising it all in SP1... can anyone confirm or deny this? I just haven't been following Microsoft's doings too much lately...
Good_Bytes @ Jan 24th 2008 12:12AM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinFS
kal326 @ Jan 24th 2008 12:13AM
Nothing much in the way of new features, its suppose to be more like a Win2k SP4 flavor. Rolled up security updates with a few minor fixes here and there. Nothing really ground breaking or impressive. I'm just waiting for the improved network transfers and unzipping of files. Unzipping a gig file with lots of individual files and folders it quite annoying regardless of what utility is used for the unzipping.
Colin Jensen @ Jan 24th 2008 12:25AM
You mean the new filesystem Microsoft has been talking about for the last fifteen years? In other words, the filesystem which has been vaporware nearly twice as long as Duke Nukem Forever? Hmmm, let me think.
michael @ Jan 24th 2008 12:41AM
Short answer : SP1 is mainly performance fixes. Changes under the hood.
And nowhere did Microsoft promise a new file system in SP1 plus other features. I don't know where you get your sources, but it seems to me they intentionally misled users to spark the old "Microsoft 'promised' this, but didn't do it" into fanboys.
And it's not hard to Y! Search "Vista SP1" or look at it in Wikipedia.
Michael LaFramboise @ Jan 24th 2008 12:46AM
michael, actually yes they did promise a new file system (WinFS)... then after years of bullshittery, they admitted that it wont make it in the Vista release; shortly after that they promised to include the new FS in SP1 (alongside most other features they cut during the development process)
