Vista SP1 has already been
previewed, gone through a
Release Candidate cycle, and had a changelog
released -- so all that's left is for Microsoft to hit us with it, right? Not so fast, Sparky -- according to various sources, you're still going to have wait three more weeks to get your hands on that hot SP1 action: circle February 15th on your Ballmer / Gates pinup calendar and start counting the days. Of course, Microsoft isn't confirming anything one way or another other than Q108, so don't get too excited, but after all we've been through together, we can't imagine the Redmond crew not giving us a (late) Valentine's Day present -- we're like, totally serious, right?
michael, actually yes they did promise a new file system (WinFS)... then after years of bullshittery, they admitted that it wont make it in the Vista release; shortly after that they promised to include the new FS in SP1 (alongside most other features they cut during the development process)
Vista is great both features and security wise. Also it has nice visuals and a very expandable base. I like it and use it without any problems. In fact i like it more than XP Professional that i'm using on my laptop. Most Vista haters are ppl with 512 MB RAM and Pentium 2 CPUs.
One thing to bitch about is it needs hardware upgrades. It works on my Quad Core 4 GB RAM setup very well. :))) But eventually ppl will catch up hardware wise and then they will love it just as they do with XP. Just remember how XP was hated in the beginning.
It would be nice if ppl sometimes would look into both sides.
Most Vista haters are not people with 512MB of RAM. My laptop has 2GB of RAM and even with ReadyBoost plugged in Vista takes a lot longer to boot programs or do anything than XP would.
The benchmarks and tests out there show very clearly that Vista is slower.
Which is why my desktop is sticking with XP for now (my desktop is a 3.2Ghz Core2Duo with 2GB of RAM [soon to be 4GB], so it's not a slow machine), because I'm not paying a performance penalty just for pretty looks.
Dual core (but sadly, AMD), 3GB of ram, vista runs fine. been running fine since RC1 when i made the switch.
I don't really know how people could so excited about winFS, to put it simply it is a database overlay for NTFS, not a new filesystem, what it would bring is database-like features to NTFS, SQL scripting, Querys, hook-ins for programs, nothing a standard user would notice.
I'll tell ya, I hope it makes Vista faster is all. The Vista that came on my laptop makes it crawl along. Making it that much more obvious is the fact that my desktops all run XP.
I spent some time tweaking Vista and now it runs somewhat more acceptably, but it just doesn't offer anything that really justifies slowing your PC down =(
If MS can speed up Vista with SP1 I'll hate it much less lol.
I have been running Vista Enterprise for quite a while now. I have had to download hotfixes to keep me productive. Does anyone know if performance is improved?
Ever since clearing up some BSOD's that were related to a VPN install, I've loved Vista. My bootup time is about 20 seconds which isn't great but isn't terrible either. That being said, it's taken a lot of tweaks and hotfixes to get stable. I'd have pulled out my hair a long time ago if I wasn't a relatively savvy user. Hopefully SP1 will fix this.
microsoft has now updated the windows update with the first three required updates for ultimate (ones needed to install sp1)
