Everex's Cloudbook postponed for "tweaks"
Remember how we told you Everex's little gOS-sporting Cloudbook was headed to Wal-Mart this month (today, to be specific)? Well hold your check book, friend-o -- they ain't done with it. According to the company's director of marketing, Paul Kim, the system requires, "A couple of last minute software tweaks," before it's ready for prime-time. There's no word on when it will make an appearance, though we're inclined to think this won't be a major delay... but you never know. Should shipments alight, we'll be the first to share the good news.

Was the price for this ever posted? I am thinking of buying one to mess with Linux on since it never seems to work for me on my Acer (DAMN YOUR BROADCOM!)
Benga @ Jan 25th 2008 1:09PM
$400.
mike @ Jan 25th 2008 1:10PM
Thanks. So pretty much same price as the Eee. I think it will sell better since it will be in stores.
Superevil @ Jan 25th 2008 1:35PM
You don't have to throw down 400$ for the cloudbook mike, you could just buy a used 1.5ghz off of eBay for a little over 2 bills and throw ubuntu on it
mike @ Jan 25th 2008 1:38PM
True but I would rather have a one that came preloaded with Linux since I know it will work. I have run Linux on my older ThinkPad T20 but I get issues with ACPI...
Flashpoint @ Jan 25th 2008 1:08PM
If it allows me to go to Limewire and download songs direct to a USB Memory Stick,
I'll take 2 !
insertAlias @ Jan 25th 2008 1:36PM
Try Frostwire. Exactly the same as the paid version of Limewire, but free open source.
monkfishbandana @ Jan 25th 2008 2:21PM
Or, ironically, use Limewire to download Limewire Pro.
Tom @ Jan 25th 2008 3:27PM
Everex Cloudbook or MacBook Air...
hmmm. ugly vs sexy?
mike @ Jan 25th 2008 3:36PM
I think this is a bit better looking then the MacBook Air personally but I think they need to axe that space in the hinges!
insertAlias @ Jan 25th 2008 4:00PM
No offense, mike, but we all already know your bias. Your opinion surprises nobody.
Joshua Walters @ Jan 26th 2008 4:06PM
Why would you use LimeWire?
Do you want a virus?
Torrents FTW!
Benga @ Jan 25th 2008 1:09PM
Gosh darn it! I was just about to head to Wal-Mart.
spass @ Jan 25th 2008 1:54PM
I am so naive, I didn't know Engadget readers shop there...
Benga @ Jan 28th 2008 1:59PM
See you wouldn't recognize sarcasm even if it slapped you in the face.
Benga @ Jan 25th 2008 1:09PM
Gosh darn it! I was just about to head to Wal-Mart.
Scott Culp @ Jan 25th 2008 1:16PM
I'm thinking that the majority of user will likely wipe the harddrive to get a regular flavour of Ubuntu or XP on it anyways.
Please don't take too long Everex, I'm really looking forward to competition in this category!! Can only mean good things for us consumers.
Todd @ Jan 25th 2008 1:59PM
Oh good grief what a grotesque visual. XP on a CloudBook? Gross! That's equivalent to Adriana Lima weighing 400 lbs.
Ed @ Jan 25th 2008 2:02PM
It's already running Ubuntu. Just install Gnome and you're back to the "regular" flavor!
Quentyn @ Jan 25th 2008 1:20PM
What's with these mini-pcs coming out lately?
Anyway, I'm loving the love for linux. I just hate that its gOS (it's so slow and so internet-dependent.)
mike @ Jan 25th 2008 1:39PM
People want smaller PCs so the companies are going to keep making them smaller. Personally a 15.4" is a perfect size to me.
bobartig @ Jan 25th 2008 1:52PM
We've gotten to the point where low-end, low-power computer hardware is fast enough and cheap enough to produce that we can really commoditize low end computing, and still end up with something useful.
This, combined with the maturing of open-source software, along with the growing emphasis on web/cloud based computing has made it a really good time to come out with these little mini computers.
Trevor @ Jan 25th 2008 1:24PM
Grrr... I was also eagerly awaiting one of these. A cheap, sturdy, and cargo pocket sized portable is the perfect deployment computer. :P
ARealOG @ Jan 25th 2008 1:27PM
What? Is that DVI I see on the side of the Cloudbook?
zeroburn @ Jan 25th 2008 1:51PM
yep, has DVI output, which is pretty nice for a cheap everex system. I plan to buy one, has a lot of possibilities for a good little mobile linux or xp system.
peestandingup @ Jan 25th 2008 5:29PM
Speaking of DVI, does anyone know the maximum resolution these can output to an external display?? I cant find it ANYWHERE.
ARealOG @ Jan 25th 2008 6:27PM
Probably 1920x1200. I doubt it could output 2560x1600.
Juaquin @ Jan 25th 2008 1:45PM
Competition is always a good thing. Hopefully we seem some good upgrades to the Eee.
superfresh @ Jan 25th 2008 2:23PM
So, pound for pound, which is the better buy: eee or cloudbook?
SergeantSalad @ Jan 25th 2008 2:44PM
I like the design of the Cloudbook better, and the fact that it has a larger non solid state hard drive. However, the "mouse" is a little goofy.
I'm still hoping EEE soon comes out with a 9 or 10 inch display that has 1024 resolution or better.
Semantix @ Jan 25th 2008 2:01PM
"B-but, I haven't put anything up!"
"You've been putting it up your whole life."
Kivimaki @ Jan 25th 2008 2:06PM
I just pre-ordered min from www.zareason.com. They have a message up saying that they were expecting to get their shipment in today, but that it looks like it is going to be delayed by a few days. I hope it is like they say, and only a few days wait.
Sauerkraut @ Jan 25th 2008 2:28PM
This sucks. EEE comes with better os
I heard this os is terrible on multiple occasions.
Ev. products also suck
tony @ Jan 25th 2008 2:43PM
All I care about is that you said "friend-o".
Drew @ Jan 25th 2008 3:03PM
How about "tweaking" the price down a bit also?
Rod @ Jan 25th 2008 3:03PM
Should I buy an eee PC right now or are there better alternatives coming out soon?
Syliss @ Jan 25th 2008 3:07PM
I so want one, I dont mind a spinning hdd, more space for what I need. I just hope they bring them to stores and not just online, would love to play with one first just in case (they suck or not.) Just need to rack up some money for one.
Dave @ Jan 25th 2008 3:23PM
For a second I thought it was running object dock (OSX dock emulator). I guess I've just never seen that flavor of linux before. Doesn't it look like it though?
broli @ Jan 25th 2008 3:27PM
For some reason I can't find the touchpad/mousebuttons. It can't be that they left it out, it would be hilarious if you need an usb mouse to navigate your cursor.
mike @ Jan 25th 2008 3:45PM
There is suppose to be a touch scree developers model I think.
The mouse is a small little touchpad that is under the keyboard if you look back some of the VIA Nanobook pictures since this just a rebrand.
peestandingup @ Jan 25th 2008 5:33PM
Its ABOVE the keyboard, nit under it. Touchpad is top/right above keyboard. The "clickers" are top/left on the other side. So, I guess its so small you could hold it like a DS/PSP.
Redwolf @ Jan 25th 2008 11:06PM
Well I sent a question about it since I never saw it on walmarts website, I was saving my money to buy one, but I guess I have to wait. Which is a good give me some more time to save some more money.
Jerry @ Jan 26th 2008 12:26AM
The Cloudbook does interest me. It does look a bit dated, but I think perhaps that's part of what charm to me. It's C7 processor, however, dampens it's attractiveness enough that I'm not compelled to buy one.
Then comes along news of Via's new Isaiah core, designed to be pretty much a drop in replacement for existing C7 designs. If one of those makes it's way into a Cloudbook, it'll no longer be "do I really want one," it'll be "Do you have any in stock?"
Tez @ Jan 26th 2008 10:44AM
These are already on sale in pc world in the uk. Priced at 349 with xp while the eee is 220 so a fair bit more. The keyboard seems better than the eee but the trackpad was pretty poor, with the cursor moving all over the place
Dex @ Feb 6th 2008 1:40PM
Looks like it's now for Feb 15:
"Find your $399 CloudBook at Walmart.com and ZaReason.com beginning 2/15/08."
