While Everex
continues to bungle the launch of the
CloudBook, Paul C. Kim is already spilling details on the next iteration, providing an already troubled launch with problems of Osborne proportions. Due to be released later this year, the upcoming CloudBooks should feature an SSD option, "female colors," and possibly even a 22-inch option. Also under consideration is mobile broadband.
Already announced were the touchscreen and 9-inch versions which we should be seeing in a couple months -- leaving you absolutely zero reason to buy a CloudBook now unless you've already been suckered into pre-ordering one; which it seems everyone has already
done, so we suppose the point is moot.

I claim I'll buy one...
heyguy @ Feb 7th 2008 9:54AM
"problems of Osborne proportions" ?
C'mon, it's not like the new models will cost the same as these CloudBooks. Also, they're a completely different class of machine (the 22", anyway).
shanoboy @ Feb 7th 2008 9:58AM
At first, the sound of a laptop with a 22" monitor may sound cool. But imagine how cumbersome the thing would be.
The thing may resemble a snow board with a screen that large.
Joe_Templeman @ Feb 7th 2008 10:01AM
With a 22" screen, its less of a cloudbook, more of a leadbook.
Laptops with 22" screens arn't laptops, there luggable PC's.
Jon Doe. @ Feb 7th 2008 10:38AM
Not really. At 22" if its LED based the additional weight being added would be only a couple pounds at most. So the current cloudbook is what? I thought around 2lbs? Add another 1.5-2lbs to that for the 22"er then another 1-1.5lbs for a better battery and you have the lightest 20"ish laptop around. Now from a width and length standpoint...that is an entirely different beast. At 22" there are some flights I couldn't take that with me into the cabin. And if its a traditional LCD panel, likely if they want to keep prices down, the whole weight thing goes out the window, and you are into the 6-7lbs area. Still lighter then any 20" laptop out there by far, but it ain't going to be a weight conscious device.
Jon Doe. @ Feb 7th 2008 10:27AM
I sense a bit of CB hate'n coming from the author of this blog post.
Color and SSD does not create an Osborne effect...oooo colors!
Joners @ Feb 7th 2008 10:49AM
Sure ok.... yeah its only 7lbs...it fits nicely in my... Oh yeah i forgot its 2foot long!
Im thinking that they are going down the same route as the EEE when they talk about a 19" model the 22" cloudbook will most probably be a desktop unit otherwise they wont be able to keep the costs down, possibly an all in one, monitor and CPU base integrated.
Kamokazi @ Feb 7th 2008 10:28AM
Well, considering that the rest of the world is logical and uses the metric system for most things, is it possible he meant 22 centimeters, which would put it at 8.66 inches, in line with their previously announced 9-inch model?
Kamokazi @ Feb 7th 2008 10:35AM
Hmmm....probably not it seems:
"We have a full line of platforms starting with the 7-inch going all the way up. Right now, we are even considering a 22-inch screen model."
However Considering and actually producing are two entirely different things.
Todd @ Feb 7th 2008 10:28AM
As the self proclaimed number one CLoudBook fan boy in the world, who ironically still has taken delivery on one because of the delays, I have to chime in and say that any future version with a 22" screen is an entirely different animal.
The whole idea here is to make thing "light weight" both in the literal sense ( tiny device that sits in between a laptop and a smart phone )and the figurative ( let a remote server to all the heavy lifting, nothing local ).
Just give me my first gen CloudBook NOW, before pontificating about future Frankenstein versions with 22" screens mkay, Mr. Kim?
jessica @ Feb 7th 2008 10:33AM
As much as I hate the idea of "female colors", the purple one is screaming "you need meee"
Andrew Pollack @ Feb 7th 2008 11:00AM
@Jessica -- I think that's exactly the point. Give in to your bad feminine self! I say this as a man with three daughters, the youngest of whom is the only person I currently know who is a more natural tech-geek than I.
silverblackvoid @ Feb 7th 2008 10:45AM
Everex rocks!
uberfu @ Feb 7th 2008 10:46AM
Why in the hell is someone going to build a 22 inch laptop ?
Scott Culp @ Feb 7th 2008 10:46AM
Crap!! Why is this all taking so long. They need to have the original model out YESTERDAY and the bigger screen 9-10" model out (without pre-announcement) next month. How long does it really take to re-tool a case lid for a bigger screen?
I am sick of hearing about all of these future versions. Asus has done it too; given us all kinds of details on future products without giving us what we want. Do we really need a PINK model for Valentine's day?? How about the mythical 10" model?? They are also getting a little too close to the price cutoff for these things too. Portable is nice but @ $509 (8G) a 900Mhz processor with limited upgrade options is getting a little hard to justify. Wasn't the Eee supposed to be $199? That worked out well didn't it?
Clearly there is a market for these things and the winner will be decided on actually RELEASED models not some vaugue vision of future products.
Anyone can announce, "build it and they will come".
pagesix1536 @ Feb 7th 2008 10:47AM
Don't do it Everex!! Don't do what Asus did, and start announcing your next products before you even ship your current product! Bad bad bad.
emailtabs @ Feb 7th 2008 11:06AM
IMHO, you will never feel buyers remorse with this strategy.
The mysthical THEY will tell you that a faster, larger, better one is coming out soon (makes you think about waiting doesn't it) B.U.T. W.E. K.N.O.W. how long it'll take for them to actually get round to building them.
I reckon it'll be at least until november before we see second generation eee's (A full year of use before i upgrade... Wahooo!)
And by the looks of things the 1st gen cloudbook (silly name) won't hit the shelves for another month or so. meaning that 22" model won't be seen until 2010. by which point they'll be so cheap we'll be getting them as sweeteners with all kinds of contracts (Phone line, t'internet, housing, car leese, business deals, maybe just given to you as you walk down the street (a man can dream can't he))
Meh!
dos @ Feb 7th 2008 11:34AM
Damn Engadget what's your problem with this thing? They sold out of preorders and it ships on Feb 15th. What a totally bungled launch that hasn't even occurred yet. At least wait until then to slam it. Isn't it going to be nice to soon have tons of cheap and tiny sub-subnotebooks to choose from once these things catch on?
Seriously I don't get the spin applied to every Everex article on Engadget, sure gOS is a pile but it's *free*. You're also free to install any free or non-free OS you choose on this machine. Basically it seems to boil down it "it's not pretty enough".
strider_mt2k @ Feb 7th 2008 11:45AM
EEEEWWWW Girl colors!
EEEEWWW!
sracer @ Feb 7th 2008 12:06PM
I heard that Everex is waiting to release the CloudBook because they want to preload them with "Duke Nukem Forever". ;)
Seriously though, I have an XO laptop and eagerly looking forward to picking up a CloudBook too.
Syke @ Feb 7th 2008 2:02PM
Ooh.. I like the purple one myself and if the price remains right... I could very well see myself picking one up to fiddle with. Although I think I'll wait to hear how well they hold up, because my intentions are to pop it in a purse and carry it around for typing up quick notes when I'm stuck waiting in the car or in a restaurant.
dvdivx @ Feb 7th 2008 9:51PM
Why can't these manufacturers focus on the basics. For Everex it means put in a Celeron and dump VIA. Bump the resolution to 1024x600 on a 9" screen. Do that and you'll get lots of sales. There are plenty of manufacturers of monster laptops complete with sli Nvidia cards but most people want something that they can carry not something that can substitute for a weight set.
Jason @ Feb 11th 2008 10:34PM
I'm sure eventually we'll get those nicer specs when the cost of parts for these sub-notebook drop even further. Right now, we're still at the early stage of affordable UMPC era started by the Eee PC.
Joshua Walters @ Feb 7th 2008 9:52PM
The Eee already has such a following that thats what Im planning on going with.
I cant imagine people getting as excited for the CloudBook, even if it does get a huge screen.
Raúl. C. @ Feb 9th 2008 9:25AM
"female colors"?? What kind of chauvinistic crap is that? Can't you just say "lighter non-white colors"?
Jason @ Feb 11th 2008 10:08PM
A 22-inch CloudBook? That sounds more like a desktop, somewhere along the line of iMac...perhaps a PC with CloudBook hardwares built right into a 22-inch LCD monitor? As for the 9-inch touchscreen version, if that's really coming out "in a couple months", then I'd rather wait for that. But I seriously doubt it...just look at how long it's taking them to release the CloudBook.
