Three undersea cables expected to be repaired by this weekend
It looks like the multitude of problems stemming from the recent slicing and dicing of five undersea cables could soon be eased significantly, with Reuters now reporting that three of the cables should be repaired by this weekend. Those include the FLAG Europe-Asia cable between Egypt and Italy and the FALCON cable system between Dubai and Oman, which are each expected to be fixed by February 10th, and SEA-ME-WE 4 cable near Egypt, which should be fixed by Saturday at the latest. What's more, while the causes for most of those cuts and outages remain a mystery, the culprit behind the cut to the FALCON cable between the UAE and Oman has now apparently been determined to be a ship's anchor, which was reportedly found abandoned near the cable. That'll likely do little to put most folks at completely at ease, however, and we're guessing they won't be until everything is back up and running, and stays that way.

The repairs will be complete with CIA wiretapping devices installed, methinks. :-)
jroc @ Feb 7th 2008 7:52PM
Methinks too, like hell this was caused simultaneously all at once by boat anchors. How do they keep thinking we'll buy this garbage?
fischju @ Feb 8th 2008 12:38AM
Me pictures a scheming Tom Cruise dropping anchors to cut the cables (The Scientologists think Anonymous are terrorits and must be in the Middle East)
john @ Feb 7th 2008 4:52PM
It seems that No Such Agency still has not learned how to split optical cable signals WITHOUT cutting the cable first. Or, is it just a coincidence that these cables together handle 100% of Iran's traffic?
bc @ Feb 7th 2008 6:24PM
yeah pretty cool. our boys at work...
Shayan Ostad Hassan @ Feb 7th 2008 6:31PM
It's not 100% of Iran's connection! I explained in the previous post too! We were online, and are still online! though with 10%-20% packet loss!
m @ Feb 7th 2008 9:30PM
i like how the guy who keeps debunking the conspiracy theory is (apparently) an iranian.

Scroll back up and look at the image again. You'll notice that FLAG and FALCON both flank Kish Island off the coast of Iran.
Where is Kish Island?
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=kish+island+iran&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.589577,77.167969&ie=UTF8&ll=27.059126,56.337891&spn=10.282267,26.499023&t=h&z=6&om=0
Not only has Iran been cut off (sub 1kb/s) - Kish Island has also been cut off from any Internet traffic - necessary for any market operations. The IOB was slated to open between Feb 1-11 and has been delayed by these cuts.
Why cut now?
Japan's Nippon Oil has agreed to buy Iranian oil in USD (September 2007). China's Zhuhai Zhenrong Corp, largest importer or Iranian oil agreed to use Euros instead of USD. China recently started diversifying their $1.3+ Trillion from USD to Euro.
In December 2007 Iran officially stopped accepting USD for their oil. The Iranian Oil Bourse will be the only global market for purchasing oil with a currency other than the USD (current markets = NYMEX, IPE).
When demand for anything in our universe goes down (i.e. US currency)
the value drops (result = bad for all countries with large USD reserves).
Why?
If countries start buying their oil via IOB (Iranian Oil Bourse)
they'll diversify (sell) their USD reserves (falling currency) into Euro (stable currency) demand for USD will drop and value will drop. China is already diversifying their massive USD reserves into Euros.
Iraq was able to sell their oil in Euro for 6 months before the US
invaded - the first order of the day after invasion was reinstating
USD Petrodollar as currency of trade for Iraqi oil. After the invasion of Baghdad, Libya (large oil reserves) surrendered to US without a fight.

Of course if a submarine can travel there and cut some cables, it wouldn't be too far fetched to leave an anchor there while they were at it?
Johan S @ Feb 7th 2008 5:06PM
How do they know the anchor wasn't deliberately dropped there to hit the cable (did the ship owner 'fess up)? Do enough anchors normally get dropped in the cable's vicinity so that this hit is within a reasonable probability?
IndiaTech @ Feb 7th 2008 5:08PM
Ryan... I dare you not cut those cables again! Don't mess with my p0rn suppy maan...
Motoken @ Feb 7th 2008 5:21PM
still, 4 others to be explained...... and anchors can be used as weapons just as air planes where used in 9/11
austin @ Feb 7th 2008 5:51PM
no need to bring that up
OneLove @ Feb 8th 2008 12:31PM
...too soon?
nilram @ Feb 7th 2008 5:32PM
Good news, the NSA called and they'll do the repairs for free!
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Feb 7th 2008 5:52PM
My sister is there right now and she says that the internet is horrible. I tried sending her a song (about 4MB) through Skype and it was going at less than 1Kb/sec.
Then again the internet in the Middle East has always sucked.
Kei @ Feb 7th 2008 6:00PM
Guys, people keep thinking that Dubai is a country.
If you are going to talk countries you say Emirates and Oman, if you want to use cities, you say Dubai and Muscat.
Dubai is a city in the Emirates.
kal326 @ Feb 7th 2008 6:24PM
Damn, so thats where I lost that anchor! No more drinking and boating for me....
John @ Feb 7th 2008 7:32PM
this war on Scientology is going a bit too far guys...
Alex10010100 @ Feb 8th 2008 12:30AM
second time im saying this. It was the damn UFO's who cut the wires.
ethan @ Feb 8th 2008 1:55AM
Those cables are emo. They cut themselves.
Adam Plante @ Feb 8th 2008 2:30AM
Did anyone else notice the cable was called SEA-ME-WE. Heehee. Like See Me Wee. That is awesome.
Nixon @ Feb 8th 2008 3:12PM
SEE MEE WEE AWESOMENESS!
J @ Feb 8th 2008 1:24PM
LOL
i have the sense of humor of a 5th grader so thats pretty damn funny.
JuggleNuts @ Feb 8th 2008 2:48AM
The point of wiretapping is to be discreet ... four cables at once isn't exactly discreet ... doubt it was our boys.
Mike @ Feb 8th 2008 1:17PM
It's called misdirection.
They aren't tapping the four lines leading into Iran that they cut. They are tapping the one line left running. Think about it. For a while now they haven't had to monitor all of the lines just one and everybody thinks they are messing with the four they just dropped boat anchors on.
BRILLIANT!
And people say military intelligence is an oxymoron.
J @ Feb 8th 2008 1:26PM
What do these things actually look like physically? I'm guessing its more than just a wire draped across the ocean floor.

Glad you enjoyed the map.
If anyone is looking for some possible explanations to this then you should check out what is sort of a "part 2" to the post linked about above:

Well, now the Department of Homeland Hysteria can add "anchors" to the list of WMD's (Weapons of Mass Disruption". My guess is that they will ask for more federal funding to investigate and will try to start tracking the potential smuggling of terrorist anchors! But cheer up! At least FEMA is not involved in the repairs.
