Merely hours after we first
wondered where all those CloudBooks were on launch day, here they come -- fashionably late, of course. As of this moment, Everex's CE1200V is up on NewEgg's site, but is
still sporting a "deactivated item" status. Nevertheless, Packard Bell's
XS20-006 (as it's so eloquently dubbed across the pond) is currently for sale at
PC World for £349.99 ($686). And yeah, there's a number of unboxing shots pleading for your attention in the link below, so what exactly are you waiting for?
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Things to improve with the CloudBook:
1. Get rid of that gap!
2. What's up with the price?
3. Larger screen
gork @ Feb 15th 2008 12:46PM
That gap is where the battery goes.... duh....
thomashayes @ Feb 15th 2008 2:25PM
Yeah the battery takes a bit of that space, but there's still a huge gap left with the battery in. It's supposed to make it easy to hold, but it just makes it look awful.
ark_v2 @ Feb 15th 2008 2:23PM
That gap is useful. You can place your hand below and close your hand so it doesn't fall.
Jake @ Feb 15th 2008 2:27PM
Even with the battery connected there is still a gap. In one demo I saw the guy was holding it through the gap and typing with the other hand. That was neat but at the time I didn't consider how it contradicts the mouse/mouse button configuration. Using the mouse is clearly a two-handed affair while they're making a grip-type thingy for typing with one hand. Enh. Not for me.
Ken @ Feb 15th 2008 12:30PM
$686 for THAT!?
teslasnp @ Feb 16th 2008 8:50PM
Did you not notice that it has XP Home?
Makes it more expensive than if it wasn't included.
AJ in the East Bay @ Feb 15th 2008 12:31PM
"The touchpad is a tiny stretch of plastic...on the right above the keyboard. The left and right mouse buttons are on the left side above the keyboard, forcing you to use two hands to navigate and click."
INSTANT FAIL for me.
Tom Oliveri @ Feb 15th 2008 1:06PM
yup, like the term 'fail' was ever cool..
RNDMIDEAS @ Feb 15th 2008 1:21PM
I was wondering about the mouse. I was never able to figure it out. All of the promo shots didn't have the sticker to indicate.
Syliss @ Feb 15th 2008 12:35PM
I just want to play with it before i drop $400 on this thing, or ill just wait and see if they bring out a 9". Either i want something this small.
from_me @ Feb 15th 2008 5:45PM
just get an Eee instead. chix dig it.
"awww your laptop is so cute. i want one!"
seriously. also, a 9" screen would mean less battery life so you have to really decide if it's worth it. i'm happy with a 7" screen and a 9" co...nevermind.
Econ @ Feb 15th 2008 6:45PM
$400? Try $700. Eee wins again.
Syliss @ Feb 16th 2008 12:20AM
Hello, i want something bigger then 4gigs, i dont care about ssd, its not even upgradeable. And its only $400, the $700 is for the pac bell in the uk duh!
from_me @ Feb 16th 2008 6:07AM
got cha. if it's hdd space you're after then the cloud is def a better choice (although there's ways to throw hdds in Eees too). but seriously, the 7 inch screen isn't that bad (n like i said before, it saves battery juice!). although my eyesight is good so that might not be the case for everyone.
DrXym @ Feb 15th 2008 12:37PM
Never buy anything in PC world. It's a horribly expensive place to buy anything and the computers they sell are overpriced and underspecced.
Karl Viklund @ Feb 15th 2008 12:37PM
CloudBook..... Hahahaha please.
Redwolf @ Feb 15th 2008 1:26PM
Ummm I don't who writes these articles but I searched newegg.com and they do not have this listed at all, here are the links :

and besides ain't no one going to pay 6xx.xx for this when it is suppose to be $399.99 I am still looking to purchase one if it ever becomes available, but it is doubtful.

RikF @ Feb 15th 2008 12:58PM
Emailtabs - if you are going to badly quote greatness, at least give it its dues!
Here, I'll do it for you...
"With apologies to the late, great, Bill Hicks"
There, that's better
emailtabs @ Feb 16th 2008 3:26AM
Cheers for doing that for me bro, i naively assumed people would get the quote.
Plus it seems i can't even click on the correct reply button.
I shall have a harsh word with myself later about this!
evilkeo @ Feb 15th 2008 12:58PM
i guess you're supposed to navigate with both thumbs using it like a smartphone. can you at least tap click on the touchpad? i wanted one, but now i don't know.
emailtabs @ Feb 16th 2008 3:15AM
Yeah, sorry bro, i naively assumed you would get the quote.
Joe S @ Feb 15th 2008 1:00PM
Maybe I missed it... what is the draw of these?
Miles @ Feb 15th 2008 1:05PM
It's supposed to be targeting the same people who want to buy an EEEPC
Frankly, I think you'd be better off spending the extra $50 to get a real laptop.
I mean, why buy something that is that underpowered when you can get a decent laptop for $50 more?
evilkeo @ Feb 15th 2008 1:12PM
going up against the EEE, but with an actual hard drive instead of the tiny flash drives of the EEE. cost is supposed to be 399 and sold at walmart. at least good for sublaptop competition.
sinai @ Feb 15th 2008 1:03PM
sort of want, solely for the fact that the battery life is reported to be more than 2 hours and has decent storage capacity. im looking at you asus.
and for fuck's sake, fire everyone in your branding/marketing department with those stupid names. "EEE" PC? wtf@!
ScooterDe @ Feb 15th 2008 4:38PM
wow, how low our expectations have sunk when 2hrs battery life is considered a benchmark. Roll on 24 hours. I know, I'm dreaming, but current battery lives suck.
Tom Oliveri @ Feb 15th 2008 1:09PM
i really like these tiny laptops ( are these MID's or laptops? )
i think the phone and laptop have to stay seperate..
one question remains, does it play doom?
Nathan @ Feb 15th 2008 1:23PM
Will you blend?
Dax @ Feb 15th 2008 1:27PM
I think its totally ugly, and the battery is just huge. A waist of $700.
ma5t3rw1tt @ Feb 15th 2008 1:45PM
Wow, that laptop sucks. The EEpc laptop looks a heck of a lot better than that. I would fork out the money for the ee, instead of that piece of crap. Sorry, but this thing has lost my vote.
thomashayes @ Feb 15th 2008 1:54PM
Yeah it's cheap(ish) but it's fugly as hell - and the EEE is far cheaper. FAIL. Proceed to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200.
B_Lizzard @ Feb 15th 2008 2:04PM
The Cloudbook costs 400$ for god's sakes. Not 700$.
spookthehamster @ Feb 15th 2008 7:32PM
Thanks for finally listening to me about it being on sale in the UK.
To whoever wrote about the mouse being annoying, it really really is. I swear the touchpad is about an inch wide, and not being able to type and mouse at the same time is very irritating.
However, it looks nicer in person than the eee, and the 30GB hard drive + Windows XP (PC World don't sell it with Linux) makes it quite tempting.
Syke @ Feb 15th 2008 2:04PM
I like the way it looks better than the EE. The EE has so much wasted space that just makes the screen look tinier whereas the Cloudbook 'raises' the screen up and brings your focus right on it. Not getting one until I hear how well they go over, but they are tempting.
Unfortunately, a strike against it.. the words 'Packard Bell' bring back bad memories.
NG @ Feb 15th 2008 3:18PM
i think the OS is amazing
but the hardware itself is simply horrible
i will personally go for the EEE
Kamall @ Feb 15th 2008 3:32PM
The draw of these machines is their small size. Yes, for only a little more money, you can get a laptop with a far better processor, larger hard drive, more memory, etc. But those would be 15"+ notebooks, not exactly portable.
Some want an ultraportable notebook to just about fit in a purse or handbag, but do not want to spend a fortune as with some of the 10/11" models. One reason why these are 7" is because screens are rare and expensive for the 10/11" models, so we may not see cheap 10/11" notebooks soon.
These notebooks definitely have a place in the market, the Cloudbook specifically, probably not.
But we will be seeing many more EEE competitors through this year, will be very exciting!
Jeffy @ Feb 15th 2008 5:14PM
The Everex site now reads 2/21 as release date. What's the deal with THAT?!
phanbouy @ Feb 15th 2008 5:33PM
with's with the dial-a-spam URLs after every one of your non-posts?
footballencarta @ Feb 15th 2008 6:08PM
It's been on sale over here on the PC World website since before Christmas - I remember looking at them and going "oooo"
Jason @ Feb 15th 2008 6:52PM
Why is Cloudbook still using that bulky power adapter and cable!? Didn't Everex notice that standard power adapter and cable add extra weight when you're carrying them with you?
Apple Mac Bon Jovi Aerosmith Ipod -Unicorn Tears- ilife forever @ Feb 16th 2008 9:21AM
I hope the eee will raise the spec soon...
Johnathon Zirkle @ Feb 15th 2008 8:32PM
Their own website says they come out the 21st, not today.
"Find your $399 CloudBook at Walmart.com and ZaReason.com beginning 2/21/08."

Just to clarify:
The Eee's stock battery lasts 3.5 hours (and the 6 cell is an optional accessory, lasting >5 hrs)
The thumbpad on the Cloudbook is a deal-breaker.
The Eee wins on all counts.
