The only thing I could highly suggest Apple to do is to change the price. If you make AppleTV box $20, people will buy and use. I assume the service will cost $$, right?
The logic is simple - If you get enough people on the service, the box pays for itself within time. Maybe it needs to be more than $20. Nonetheless if there is an AppleTV on every set (with some families that have 2-3 or more televisions) or maybe integrated into a flat panel TV, Apple can work on cornering the market. Further, the sales from AppleTV can boast a stronger sales in Macs - in which iPod and iPhone sales already are doing.
And no, I have not ignored R&D or Hardware costs. Those costs are partially ruled by units made. If Apple expects 10,000 units, they calculate the costs to cover those 10,000. However, if Apple believes it can sell and then manufacture 100,000 units, then the box will cost less.
This is not an uncommon practice. How do you think cell phone companies sell $200 phones for $50? With a 2 year contract at $30 a month plus extra fees.
Finally - If you think this is about me 'pimpin' my site, well, you're right - in a way. I don't hide who I am and I stand behind my site.
"If you get enough people on the service". What service? Right now it's mostly a way to hook up your own media to your TV. Now, if you were _suggesting_ a kind of subscription plan, etc., as others here have way more eloquently said. You should've said this the first time instead of talking about the ATV as if you'd never heard of it before.
OK, maybe "Service" is a bad word. Customers would still be buying movies and tv shows from Apple. This is where you get the money back.
At $200, I would most likely buy 1 box for the living room. If the boxes were even $50, then I could see getting 2. Wouldn't it be cool if your next LCD came with "AppleTV Inside".

um....what?
I love how people consistently ignore R&D costs as well as hardware costs.
$20? I can't even get a fifth of Jim that cheap.

BTW, contracts suck.
