"Habeas corpus is already on the fritz. I'll be a thought-criminal in no time. No, people stop paying attention, and they trust their freedoms to bullish fear-mongers. Then, for their safety, they haven't got any freedoms."
Who?
Name one!
What freedoms have you lost? You most certainly have not lost the right to make stupid statements, have you?
I asked him to name a person wrongly held in violation of habeas corpus. I've known what it is since before you were born.
You can't name one.
We really were attacked on 9-11 and you children think Bush is your enemy, but you can't name a single person wronged by Bush. He's running out of time in office. When does the fascism start?
As for thought crimes, they do exist. They're called hate crimes, and they were the invention of liberals.
Quoting Teddie Kennedy vis-a-vis personal rights is hilarious. Ask Mary Jo Kopechne. (Oh that's right. You can't. She's dead.)
There have been people wrongly interned in this country. During WWII a Democrat President interned a lot of Japanese. After 9-11 Bush sought to shield innocent Muslims from wrongful response.
Gitmo is a place, not a name of a person. Name someone there wrongly incarcerated. One detainee released from there went on the blow up the Islamabad Marriott, killing a lot of people.
This is what you people seek to protect.
And those in Gitmo are not protected by the Geneva Convention.
"I can't name a Jew killed in the holocaust. Does that mean none of them did?"
I can.
But yours is an intellectually bereft argument. You make assertions, then you ought to be able to support them with facts, and facts are scarce around here. There's lots of emotion but little in the way of fact.
Good grief- we're all on the brink of losing our freedoms but you can't find a single person in the US who has lost any rights. Bush is going Nazi but he's running out of time to do it. When does the fascism start?
It's more fascist to make allegations like those seen here that have no merit.
Really struck a nerve, eh? Truth can really be a cold shower.
You see, you can't make statements in Iran like you do here. They censor the internet. You can't make public statements In Venezuela deriding the government. You get beaten.
Here you're free to claim you're losing your rights.
And none of you are beaten and none of you lose your rights to post these goofy thoughts.
It's so refreshing to see someone who can think for themselves and not just tow the party line on *every single issue*. I mean, you are clearly not biased to any party in any way or shape. I applaud you for your centrist ideals!
You requested an example of an American who lost his right to haebus corpus. His name is Jose Padilla. Our government held him for over three years without charges or a trial: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/2037444.stm
drjohn, you are a retard. Thought crime are illegal thoughts, hate crime are crimes that are anything but thought and targeted at people of some social group...you're an idiot to think that hate crime is if you have racists thoughts, it's illegal...I mean wow...I have no words for your stupidity. Also, people here provided names of the victims affected already, so you better own up to your idiotic comments. Better yet, you should just stfu because the next thing coming out of your mouth is gonna be stupid.

Wrong.
Hate crimes are crimes with added punishment for the assumed motivations. Punching you in the face is a crime. Punching you in the face because you're a member of some protected minority can be a hate crime, and punished differently. The difference is the thoughts held in your mind when the crime is committed. You think I should be banned from here, daedric?
The kind of precedent set when FDR interned the Japanese without habeas corpus?
How about Lincoln's proclamation that the right to habeas corpus can be suspended?
How about those precedents?"
The very fact that you cite those instances shows that even you recognize the folly of those acts. Time has proven those situations to be blemishes on the record of US history.
Lincoln was a great president. Perhaps the greatest. Even he made mistakes.
And I find it troubling that you'd conflate these missteps with the protection of a telecom company.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1, much like its Limited Edition sibling that we reviewed last month, is ever-so-slightly thinner than the iPad 2, a slate that most sane individuals (and competitors, for that matter) would confess is the market leader today.

Hi,
You requested an example of an American who lost his right to haebus corpus. His name is Jose Padilla. Our government held him for over three years without charges or a trial:

Thanks,

I said wrongly held.
Padilla has been convicted.
