Everex's Cloudbook delayed again, again
Oh Cloudbook -- it's like you just keep floating off on us. We all thought Everex's little Eee competitor was going to drop today (the 15th), but since that turned out to be a bust, we started to get curious. As you might have guessed, the $399 UMPC has been ever-so-slightly delayed, again, this time until February 21st (or so they say). We've covered an unboxing if you're really jonesing for a look at the gOS-sporting device -- but keep in mind you could ruin that x-mas-morning feeling of wonderment when you pop open the box.[Thanks, Travis]

YOU SHOULD HAVE USED FEDEX
I do love how Engadget totally ignored the fact that ZaReason is shipping their preorders or shipped some of them Friday. I do agree that Everex is just a mess. Pretty sad.

Indeed...Everex didn't technically postpone it. It's confirmed that the Cloudbook did in fact ship out to consumers on the 15th. I can prove it with the UPS tracking number I got for the one I'm expecting. Whatever, I'm going to blame Walmart for everything, even if it's not their fault.
Why are people so excited about this?
Because it's something cool that isn't a Crapple Macintrash.
as if this isnt a publicity stunt
Oh I agree, generally the best way to inspire confidence in your company is to continuously say your product will be out at a certain time and then, on that day, say "whoops, we really meant like a week from today". I want to buy the product already!
Maybe they just realized they left a gaping hole in the middle of their laptop. Crap! Where's the Bondo?
Prior to this year I had never heard of Everex.
Man am I glad I did, in early January while comparing laptops to replace an older one.
If you get a chance to own an Stepnote XT5300 run, do not walk to buy it.
This 17' beauty comes stock with a GeForce 8600GS - 256 dedicated - video card, a 720p+ widescreen monitor, 120 gig HDD, 1 gig RAM - 200 pin DDR2 667 upgradeable to 4 Gigs and all solid components inside.
Webcam, SPDIF HD audio, DVD, Firewire & USB, Multi card reader, 54 & 35 express slot, AMD 64X2 Athlon , Atheros 5006 wireless adapter, Windows Vista Home Ultimate and a design that is comfortable.
No more carple tunnel syndrome with the back set keyboard styling and The price was a mere pittance of what I expected to pay.
I got it at Newegg and low and behold they had RAM and HDD's on sale. I felt obligated to soup this up to 4 Gigs RAM and popped in another 320 WD hard drive.
This machine is everything I wanted and more. If I had to come up with a con, it would be Vista, as windows update tries to ruin you with it's driver updates - Be careful.
I put Singbox Solo on here and the kids have this thing running darn near 24/7 without a hiccup,
Nice to be pleasantly surprised for once instead of let down.
Great job Everex!
Man, they should pay me for this - Ha Ha.
We can buy this in the UK now (though it's rebadged Packard Bell).

What a disappointment this fugly beast of a thing is... Hello, this is 1980 calling. We want our designs back.
If you're gonna make a 7" machine, make it 7 inches wide, for crying out loud, with a borderless display. How much extra would it cost to replace those fugly hinges with a swivel, ala a tablet, and put a couple of buttons on the display? 5 bucks? 5 bucks extra and a software tweak to re-orient the display, and you've got a "free" book reader thrown in. Don't even get me started on where they appear to have put the mouse.
I think Everex/Packard Bell must have employed whoever was designing Zenith gear.
I'm still eagerly waiting for a 7" to 10" machine with a decent resolution, plenty of options for adding (or including) bluetooth, wifi, hspa, touch, THAT ISN'T FUGLY. Neither this monstrosity nor the Eee cuts it.
What are you using now, your highness?
I'm using my Eee. I LOVE it.
Too bad you have no idea what you're missing.
@Darex
Your highness? Lol... I guess my post was a bit arrogant?
Oh, I know what I'm missing... what I'm missing is a decent 7" machine for my stable... I didn't say I wouldn't buy one, I said neither the Eee nor the Everex isn't fugly...
Frankly speaking, I'd have an Eee by now if I wasn't in Africa, most likely hacked with at least a USB hub, HSPA & bluetooth inside. Don't know I'd go to the extent of hacking touch into the display...
As for what I'm using now - an old HP iPaq, a Nokia N95, and a Toshiba Satellite 17".
If I had a couple of grand I'd go for the 8.9" lifebook, but I'd much prefer an Eee (currently the best option imho, for a *companion* to your main pc).
Take the Eee, add a gobi chipped mobile card (hsdpa and evdo on one chip), change the screen to a swivel that I can read books and magazines on in portrait, and I'd be happy. Make it a touch and throw in bluetooth. The icing on the cake would be a borderless display (and at least 1024x768)...
One of the main reasons I avoided the Eee, was to wait and see what happened. It's certainly shook things up, Everex of all people first to jump on the bandwagon, but I am sure we will see a lot more activity in this area, giving the expensive 10-12" machines and umpc's a run for their money. I wouldn't be surprised to see a machine not unlike I've described in the $750-$1000 price range (which is what a heavily modded Eee would end up costing anyway) soon.
As far as I know, the latest gOS is still very buggy. I hope the Everex Cloudbook is using a fixed version.
I hate side scrolling. Does the browser display web pages in 1024 mode fit-to-screen'd to 800 pixel with?
Anyway, someone email me when they decide to put an LCD that has a pixel width of 1024 instead of 800.
Thanks.
Maybe if engadget didnt give Everex so much wind every time they postponed the cloudbook we would actually see them change their routine?
