Dell adds Penryn to Inspiron laptop lineup
Ooh, like we're so surprised Dell. The ever-popular Inspiron series of laptops is getting Intel's latest inside, with the Inspiron 1720 configurable with up to a T9300 2.5GHz Penryn processor for as low as $1,199, while the Inspiron 1420 does up to a T8300 for as low as $924. Granted you'll probably want to pair Penryn with more than the base specs (or you might be able to skim some more off those prices if you really work at it), but it's not hard to nab yourself a well-specced Penryn machine for well under $1,500. Our only questions is, what's taking the 1525 so long to get this upgrade?

My only question is what's taking the MacBook Pro so long to get this upgrade?

They are tying to make it thinner...*rolls eyes* Remember. Form over function.

You can actually configure a top of the line 1420 for close to $1000...if u do a quick search there is a coupon code available for $400 off laptops $1299 or more.

Everything is fine and dandy in the configuration until you realize there's no 7200 RPM hard drive available for any Inspiron model. You would need to go "up" to the XPS line, but then forgo the 17", unless you go with the monstrous oh-so-non-portable M2010. Pass.

Or you could just get the XPS M1730? Just a thought.

If you select the low-end or middle 1720 you will see the option for the 7200 RPM laptop

I just tried that and you're right. That's screwed up. If you option those 2 models to be the same as the top-o-the-line model, you end up paying A LOT more. Not nice, Dell.

Yep this is always the case with dell. you are better off selecting the 'base' configuration and then adding the extras manually. It always comes out cheaper!

gibber9583, I don't know if what you're saying has always been the case with Dell, but it's not the case here and certainly the opposite of what I said. :) The base model with the exact same options as the top of the line model will be WAY more expensive. Check it out for yourself.
