Dare we say it, the tide is turning. With some
hot numbers projected for 2008, the PS3 is seeing a lot of wins lately, most notably that little format-war scuffle you may have heard about. Now that we've (finally) got wind of a release date for the
DualShock 3, and an SKU that includes MGS4 sweetening the deal, the still-pricey PS3 is looking mighty alluring. So, what's your story, what's it going to take?

Why buy console when you have a PC. Spend the extra few bucks on a windows extender and walla you have a home theater capable of playing games on your Shiny new HD Plasma TV.
BLU-Ray drives are cheaper than the Players or the PS3. I will never again spend money on a console. The games are lackluster to say the least(old game engines re-skinned 30 times)IMO. For the cost of a console you can upgrade the Computer you currently have to play the current technology. Basically unlimited storage capability with a CPU. Keyboard and mouse will always rule over a gamepad for gaming.
But I guess some ppl like the console selection of games(American Idol reskinned, Pacman 4000, ATV disaster and the like) so.... As history always repeats itself the PS3 will be $199 in about 2 yrs and have BC and 200GB storage with 2 Dual shock 3 controllers bundled with 5 games blah blah blah... But the week after that they will be announcing the release of the PS360/PS4 or whatever for an unrealistic price. Consumers around the world will stand in line for days and pay the stupid price for it.
Console Games: $60 ea vs. PC games: $50 ea or less.
Console: as is vs. PC: upgradeable
Backward compatibility: Old games! If you want backwards compatibility on a console just buy a current title. It the same game just re-skinned! Or just plug in one of your outdated systems and play on it.
"Why buy console when you have a PC."
I stopped reading after this... Who are you trying to convince? There's a market for PC gamers and a market for console gamers. Both formats have their advantages and disadvantages, leave it at that.
I need these 4 things.
1. Under $299
2. Online stuff
3. Slimmer resign
4. More features (PVR or some other cool stuff)
It will probably be Christmas 2009 before all that is ready to go.
No one is making mention of a drawback I find particularly important - the PS3 audio chipset's inability to decode DTS HD + offer a bitstream output. I plan to overhaul my audio setup later this year to accomodate all this new HD stuff. Forget future-proof, the PS3 can't even keep up with current technology.
I will wait til summer time before I buy which is when the new chipset would go in, if in fact they will release one. By that time the DS3 controllers will be bundled. I think summer is a better time to buy.
i chose "I've chosen another side in this war, and I'm sticking to it. Probably." C'mon guys why would you want a bulky system? on top of that stupid expensive? I say NAY! No one can bet XBOX live even if its free. Look at Wii Charging for online gaming per title and it will probably flunk too. Microsoft has achieved alot due to good marketing and proving that the online community prefers XBOX live. Yeah PS3 graphics are pretty but do i really want to play online with no chatting and all the leisure options XBOX 360 provides. On the other side I would rather not buy an ENORMOUS BLU-ray dvd player. C'mon people Wii Outsold PS3 isnt that proof enough?
i'll buy one as soon as gran turismo is released.
just like i bought the ps2 for gt3a, and the psp for gtmobile. oh, that's right... that's why i -still- don't own a psp.
In Australia Sony bundled a 40GB PS3 with their Bravia LCD Full HD screens.
I couldnt resist.
It would be great to have had PS2 compatibility but I have a full house. PS2, and PSOne, PS XBox, and XBox 360 as consoles and PSP and DS Lite as handhelds.
Bring on cheap Blu Rays please
I'd like to drop some few comments. We are in 2008 and things have quite changed when PS3 got launched. From a price perspective, Blue ray drivers are less expensive than used to be, and why increase the capacity for HDD if you can't run games of them ? I'd rather have 40GB HDD than 80 or 120GB and pay less money. Besides, in the 80GB model, Sony removed the cpu for PS2 from it and made it software emulation which caused all the troubles with backward compatibility to begin with. Why the heck the price hasn't changed?
In addition, RSX is too old right now, NVIDIA released the 9th generation of its Geforce family while the RSX is Geforce 7. Should this have brought the price of PS3 even further or at least Sony upgrade the graphics chipset and enable AA in full HD. Cell processors should have become smaller in fabrication. Why PS3 footprint is still so big? no answer yet.
Consoles are all about games. If I want to buy a console I buy it to play games period. We need titles that are exclusive to PS3 plus other titles to help people enjoy playing games. We all have PCs that are suitable to do our daily work and enjoy movies. Another thing needed is for the PS3 to be cracked just like PSP so people can do all the stuff they want. Run 3D drivers under Linux if they want. Install 3D party application to enable MKV for example or even better harness the power of that system.
As for the Dual Shock 3 controller, Sony shouldn't have removed the rumble feature in the first place. DS3 should be included as part of the system and not as an add on.
Price cut, smaller footprint and more titles, improvement for PSN. That's what we need.
I agree, ONE thing ppl arent thinking about is the sluggish Blu ray drive on the ps3, that thing is absolute garbage. its 2x and it doesnt even run at that. ANd pluss all the price drops are due to sony removing ps2 hardware. sony needs to include a new 4X blu ray drive, bring down the manufacture to 45 nm and try to gain a market advantage by dropping down prices.
This is an old argument, but that doesn't make it wrong. When most Blu-ray players cost more than a PS3, you can convince yourself you're getting a bargain. Mainly because you are. Well, assuming you've already convinced yourself that re-buying all the films you already re-bought on DVD is the way forward, of course.
I wouldn't personally buy one though, mine would come from http://www.gadgets4nowt.co.uk !
A new Gran Turismo. The same thing that sold me a PS2.
A MGS4-branded gunmetal gray version would definitely make me buy it...
