Not happy letting us Yankees get away with all the
3D sporting action, the BBC plans to test a 3D HD broadcast of a Rugby Six Nations match next month. A lot like the NBA's test with last year's
All-Star Game and
NBA Finals, the March 8th game between Scotland and England will be captured by three camera rigs and then transmitted via satellite -- unlike the fiber connection used by the NBA -- to an audience watching a big screen with 3D glasses. Can Communicate, Inition and Axis are the companies forming 3DFirm, which is partnering with the Beeb to make the whole thing happen, including working out a new style of camera work and post production. We won't say we're waiting for a 3D broadcast of
real football to get excited about these tests (we'll just think it.)

Real football? You don't know the meaning of the word...
I wonder where I can watch this?
Danny @ Feb 28th 2008 12:02PM
You made a mistake with your links, Richard. When I clicked Real Football, all I saw were posts related to the Superbowl, not the Champions' League.
mymaclife @ Feb 28th 2008 12:14PM
Real Football? Just so there's any confusion:
Football = European (real football)
Rugby = Serious game for tough men
American Football = Rugby with padding and helmets, come on Stateside players get some guts.
Soccer = American name for European football... why?
Raheem @ Feb 28th 2008 12:19PM
I'm English, from London, but to be fair, the term soccer actually came from a legitimate source endorsed over here. I'm not sure of the entire story something to do with the abbreviation of the Assocation of Blah Blah why am I even posting this comment.
Dan @ Feb 28th 2008 12:28PM
Soccer is not an American name, it is an English one and is short for 'Association Football'. Association Football (the game played in the Premier League, etc) is just one of various codes that sprang from the mass Shrovetide football matches played throughout Europe but mainly in England. The two other most common codes are Rugby Union Football and Rugby League, as codified by the Rugby Football League. The codes evolved in England's public schools which each developed their own football rules (notably Rugby School). The convention of two halves to a game stems from English universities. Players who came from various public schools would agree to play one school's set of rules in the first half, and another school's set of rules in the second. So now you know.

> Dan - it was satire, but thanks for the history lesson! ;)
Jeff @ Feb 28th 2008 4:51PM
it was satire, but sometimes it's hard to tell when the ethnocentric "america is always right" nonsense is serious or ironic.
...i wish "freedom fries" was satire, but some retards out there were serious. ...you never know.

Tom @ Feb 28th 2008 12:58PM
I think this is an excellent move by the BBC. It is very positive to see them putting technology like this on trial
Ray @ Feb 28th 2008 1:25PM
DEVO did this 20 years ago.
It was a catastrophe.
Alex @ Feb 28th 2008 1:29PM
Real fotball, guess what? It's the one you play with your feet. Some call it soccer.
Ma2T @ Feb 28th 2008 1:32PM
I can only hope and assume it will be broadcast on Sky HD (BBC HD channel). It should be interesting to watch :)
Richard @ Feb 28th 2008 1:51PM
Is it just me or does the logo look like a testicle? *Checks high school biology textbook*
Yeah, I think that's a testicle...
threefingeredlord @ Feb 28th 2008 3:02PM
You need a textbook to tell what a testicle looks like?
Richard @ Feb 28th 2008 3:28PM
No.. I was... I was just... :(
Jon @ Feb 28th 2008 2:31PM
Do you just post inflammatory asides like this to bump up the comment count? Mission accomplished I guess!
synf @ Feb 28th 2008 2:37PM
This is brilliant. Rugby is a brilliant game.. The "auld enemy" clash between Scotland and England will be a brilliant match. I'm going to see if I can get a chance to catch a glimpse of this brilliance. In 3d. woo!
Oh and rugby is nothing like American foodball.. its a totally different game..don't think American football is rugby with pads.. It's not. I is serious, brutal, and complicated compared to any other sport.
Well done the Beeb!
Come on Scotland!!
technophobe @ Feb 29th 2008 3:30AM
How many games have you won this championship?
You havn't got a chance, and we are on a high after beating the frogs.
synf @ Mar 9th 2008 12:06PM
Yes! Scotland beat England in this game.... get that round yas!
heh heh he :) chuffed!
ssuk @ Feb 28th 2008 2:53PM
Slight typo there, you linked "Real football" to the Superbowl tag, not proper football or 'soccer'. =P
roman.kim @ Feb 28th 2008 9:05PM
By "real football" you mean the one where your play with your feet, right? Not that soft American Rugby with pads...
chris nixon @ Feb 29th 2008 3:48AM
Real football...LOLing out loud. Good one!
