Hot or Not: Estonia laptop edition
Get this: an Estonian newspaper has teamed up with HP to find the country's most unsightly laptop, and while the one pictured above hasn't been deemed the victor (yet), it definitely looks to have been on the wrong end of a Russian cyber attack. Apparently, the contestants have already been selected, and users can surf on over and place their vote for the single most repulsive machine in the mix. Thankfully, the two winners (audience "favorite" and editor's choice) will each receive a brand new HP Pavilion dv2699 Special Edition lappie, which we fully expect will be treated just as poorly as the rig it's replacing.

Where did all those double-A batteries come from?
initialxy @ Feb 29th 2008 10:51AM
if you open up your laptop battery, the inside looks like a series of double A batteries.
turn_self_off @ Feb 29th 2008 12:47PM
and those AA may very well contain a string of "coin" shaped ones...
James @ Feb 29th 2008 1:15PM
Those aren't AA batteries, they're lithium-ion cells, about 50% larger than a AA, it's what you'll find inside most laptop batteries.
Super small laptops contain flat rectangular lithium polymer batteries but the round cells are considerably cheaper still.

They should have give the winner an Apple laptop....

Engadget, you should have labeled this post NSFHG:
"Not Safe For Hardware Geeks". Be more careful next time.

Dell once again proves is superiority over all other PC makers. I think they just started carrying this one at Best Buy.
ShadowMaker @ Feb 29th 2008 11:08AM
I guess they didn't play Doom ON it, but WITH it. That's nice for a change.
Zoesch @ Feb 29th 2008 11:27AM
I love it how well old laptops like the original powerbook, the Toshiba T1200 and T3100 and the lunchbox/luggables like the Kaypro, Siemens and Sharp PC7000 have stood the test of time.
They might be somewhat worthless for anything beyond basic text processing (And Zork, hehehehe) but you don't see hardware that durable anymore.

Seems like this time, the battery was the ONLY thing to come out unscathed. Guess Sony is making them better than ever.
bdkennedy1 @ Feb 29th 2008 12:07PM
Maybe it was designed to look like that.
MB_User @ Feb 29th 2008 12:16PM
I had one of those Dells once upon a time. It's an 8100 or 8200 (ish) series. Actually, mine still works, and I used it up until a year ago, when one of the hinges broke.
BigD145 @ Feb 29th 2008 12:25PM
A Dell? Yep, I'd vote for it. It definitely looks like garbage to me.
egotman @ Feb 29th 2008 12:26PM
Judging from the battery, this looks like a case of Dell FTL?

Foul indeed. I'll trade my dv2000 for that steampunk rig.

Most of those are just old laptops, and as ugly as they are, they're in decent shape for their age. An ugly laptop would be that sledged Dell or the blown-out IBM. I feel for those people, as I have laptops that have no screens, have a laptop with a hangin'-on-by-one-hinge screen, and I use them for real work. A new laptop is just too costly, and all my laptops range from 1993-1999, which goes to show just how much life you can truly squeeze out of a laptop.
Bradley Masters @ Feb 29th 2008 3:09PM
They should probably give them a Toughbook.
RoboDan @ Feb 29th 2008 4:51PM
I had that laptop! It's the Inspiron 4100 (Pentium 3m). It ran hot as hell. Thankfully, I called Dell 5 years after I bought it (warranty expired 3 years after purchase) and they gave me a new Core Duo laptop with Vista for FREE (no warranty, though).
It was because it was overheating. They call this a "safety recapture". Awesome :)
RoboDan @ Feb 29th 2008 5:49PM
... And I didn't even have to enter some stupid contest!

SacredByte @ Feb 29th 2008 8:31PM
Just in case anyone was wondering, the laptop in the picture looks to be an Inspiron 4100/4150 (or the Laitude C-series equivalent).
