Dell's rugged Latitude XFR D630 wants a piece of your Toughbook
While Dell's tame Latitude D630 just got Penryn-ized, the XFR edition comes ready for operation in seriously extreme scenarios. Built to meet MIL-STD 810F standards from the Department of Defense, this beast not only handles just about anything you throw at it, on it or inside it, but it also promises to provide "23-percent better system performance than the Panasonic CF-30." Furthermore, it boasts a 14.1-inch outdoor readable display (with optional touchscreen technology), a 2.0GHz T7250 or 2.2GHz T7500 CPU, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a shock-mounted 80GB HDD (or a 32GB / 64GB SSD, if you prefer), integrated DVD burner, Intel's GMA X3100 graphics set, WiFi / Bluetooth and optional WWAN for good measure. You'll also find a 6-cell battery with ExpressCharge, a magnesium handle, a smorgasbord of ports and a starting weight of 8.9-pounds. Heck, Dell even gives you a choice of Black / Charcoal and Desert Tan color schemes, but you'll be handing over a minimum of $3,899 to pick up either.

Oh and I get the Toughbooks from a state bid, so the price I got mine at was $2,800. Sorry about that, forgot my discount.
I just bought the previous version of this. The D630 ATG. I wouldn't call it ugly, but it's bulky. I bought it with the T7500 and 2 gig of RAM. I use this for GIS out in the field. The performance specs were much greater than any toughbook plus they were $1000 cheaper. This biggest selling point is the 500 nit display. I had to trade out the shock mounted hard drive for something faster and with a higher capacity. (130 Gig) So far, I am happy with my purchase.
Is it tough enough to take a bullet for me?
Like anything else, it would probably depend on type of weapon, range, etc. But if an iPod could save a soldiers life (http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/05/ipod-takes-bullet-for-soldier/) and stop a bullet, I would wager that this could probably as well.
cool.. a slide-out cup holder
Now if they could just put out a computer that has a hard drive that lasts longer than a year.
wow, can you people please GROW A BRAIN??? its a laptop for the military not youre fancy ass houses, does it look like they give a shit if their laptop looks nice while they get shot at? didnt think so...
Good lord, just when I thought Dell's stuff couldn't get an uglier they go and do something like this. Whoever is responsible for the design should be shot.
As is typical with Dell, they are incapable of designing anything today. This laptop was designed by Augmentix and is currently built by Augmentix. Well, that's not even 100% true since Augmentix outsources the mfg. to another company. Anyone buying these should be prepared for a POS since the actual company building these supposedly hires ex-cons (they are cheap labor, and if they don't show up for work its a violation of parol & back off to jail for them). You can imagine the attention to detail an ex-con may give the computer. What is really pathetic is that it took Dell 6 months to slap the Dell logo on this POS and start selling it. Here is the initial release of this product by Augmentix 6 months ago (Aug. 2007)... http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/20/augmentix-debuts-the-xtg630-ruggedized-laptop/
any knows if this notebook is noiseless ?
i know it's not fanless, but do we hear the fans ? or is it totally silent (except DVD and HD noises)
thanks
"For the price charged - they could of added a little better "computer" to the tough case design."
Mike,
For someone with such a vast amount of education (as you state), you should have impeccable English writing skills. You should go back to your ivy league school and get your money back.
