Acer's never had an international press conference in New York before, but there's a first time for everything, and the company used the occasion to launch the second generation
Gemstone laptops. Coming in a special blue ("Gemstone Blue," how wild), the new 16- and 18.4-inch machines feature 16:9 1080p screens, 1.5GHz Penryn processors, 512MB NVIDIA 9650m GS graphics, and those Blu-ray drives
we heard about. The graphics chip is at the center of Acer's new CineReal system, which offloads BD playback to the GPU and provides Dolby headphone output (and real 5.1 sound on the bigger model). Battery life is estimated at 2.5 hours on the 16-inch and three hours on the 18.4, but what's really impressive here is the pricing: starting at $900 and up, with decently spec'd configs hitting around $1,700. Should be shipping in a month or so, according to Acer. Two more pics after the break.
good to know... i've been meaning to build myself a HTPC. guess i found my mainboard chipset!
They are talking about the included GPU, 512MB NVIDIA 9650m GS graphics. It decodes HD so your CPU doesn't have to.
Hey..My 1yr old Acer 5610Z has worked without a hardware problem. I guess its just your bad luck.
wait till the warrenty runs out.
I too work for Gateway/Acer tech support. I don't feel all Acers are bad.
ya wait till it runs out, Acerguy will come and mess it all up!
we probably work at the same place Jeremy.
Acerguy wont mess your computer up but when you send it in for service we always mess something else up.
guess Acer has a morale problem. who knew?
maybe yall should call in steve ballsmer for a pep talk
this is actually nice i mean i have to see the specs of the 900 dollars one but this is something i might consider if my current lappy fails me
Last Acer I bought (2 years ago) was fantastic quality, very cheap and never had a problem. The HP replacement on the other hand EH! These look nice glad to see them returning to a nice design and the BLURAY drive is a great feature at that price.
My wife's macbook has been repaired once, had the battery replaced and the mag safe connector over-heated and melted all within 9 months, any mass produced device will have bad eggs thats just life.
Man. Acer's really bringin' it.
whats up with the spacebar in some pictures? it's severely curved on the right side. awkward. kinda cool actually.
The design is funky and all, but please tell me there is an option of a more powerful processor than 1.5GHz. I've had a look through Acer's site (damn you, Flash mini-site!) and their brochure, but can find no more details about the processor than it's a Core 2 Duo. Seems reasonable that there will be a higher-end choice but can find no confirmation of this following extensive (read: 2-minutes) research.
Apple and Sony so just got PWND in the looks department. It will be interesting to see how this thing performs though. Good pushing the design bar up a notch Acer.
These laptops are really quite ugly - I hope the people that think otherwise get somebody else to dress them in the morning.
The glossy black bezels will look like cheap plastic and there is no coherency to the design at all.
Good Looking!
Area's NB is very good.
"Battery life is estimated at 2.5 hours on the 16-inch and three hours on the 18.4"
So battery life is better on the machine with the larger screen? huh?
probably because it is a bigger machine, and therefore can fit a bigger battery
這台不錯唷!
那個能再多介紹一下基本款和更貴版的差別嗎?
On the 16" model
"1x Blu-Ray Disc"
What are they trying to achieve with that?
Blu-Ray.com says:
"According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x speed is defined as 36Mbps. However, as BD-ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data transfer rate the minimum speed we're expecting to see is 2x (72Mbps)."
I am really serious why would anuone say i'll wait for the Centerno 2, Am I wrong that Centreno line of processors are really weak sisters?
