Gateway revs the M-series laptops to X and XL

It hasn't even been a year since Gateway dropped the M-series laptop on us, but with all the other kids getting fancy new Penryn shoes, it's time for an upgrade -- say 'allo to the M-151X and M-151XL. Only the XL gets the fancy new 2.4GHz T8300 Core 2 Duo, actually -- poor X here is still wearing last year's 65nm 1.66GHz T5450 fashions. Both feature a 15-inch glossy screen, though, as well as 256MB ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT graphics with HDMI out, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, fingerprint reader, 5-in-1 memory card reader, slot-loading dual-layer burner, 250GB drive, and Vista Home Premium. Not a bad little package, especially for the price: the X will set you back a cool grand, while the XL runs $1,299.

Neither of these are newsworthy. Why didn't Engadget cover their like-equipped tablet? It's the only one on the market that has a real video card, in the United States.

I'm sure this sounds like flame bait but, isn't this just a tic better then a MacBook of the same price? I see more ram, a bigger screen, fingerprint reader, 5-in-1 memory card reader, MAYBE better graphics.

Why is everybody mocking this so badly?

I'm right there with you man. I have the older M series Gateway that I am now forced to sell thanks to the iPhone SDK being OSX only and I'm not happy about it. You'll get no argument from me that the Macbook Pro is the better laptop, but man, I paid $750 for this Gateway with 3 gig of ram, 250gig HD, core 2 duo, etc. It easily blows away the standard MacBook's and isn't far off the pace of the MBP. Yes, it's not as well made, or as pretty, but the MBP is over twice the price! I just wish I didn't have to buy one for work. There are lots of things I'd much rather spend the extra $800-1300 on than a slightly faster/prettier notebook.

Exactly. It's only a 'tic' better than a MBP for the price. Why are they mocking it so badly? Because you _expect_ macs to be overpriced. Gateways are supposed to be cheap. I generally expect macbooks to run $1000 more than a similarly equipped windows machine.

Yeah, there's hackintosh. But I really don't feel like messing with it, plus I would need to buy a copy of Leopard also. It's just not worth the hassle.

Agreed. A "prettier" (keeping in mind that beauty is in the eye of the beholder) chassis and a "better" OS isn't worth an extra 1000 dollars to me

they have a really good gaming laptop for $1349
1.66ghz cpu (yeah its pretty bad but it can be upgraded), 3gb ram, 512mb nvidia 88000gts.

You can get an Asus M51sn or an Asus M50sv for the same or cheaper price with the newer nvidia 9500 series with 512 dedicated memory :)

I think the reason engadget didn't cover the update to gateway's tablet line is because those tablets don't exist. I ordered one on release day, 2/14, and it was delayed until April. Since they haven't built any yet, there's really nothing to talk about...
