Intel reveals plans for quad-core laptop CPUs
It looks like your favorite lap burner will get all quad-ified this year, thanks to the folks at Intel, and a little something we call "enthusiast pressure." The hot-to-the-touch CPU rumor mill claims that we'll see the quad-core, 45nm QX9300 hit the scene after the Centrino 2 (aka Montevina) chips are launched in the second quarter of the year. The general feeling is that the quad-equipped laptops will primarily be heavier, desktop-replacement systems, as the Core 2 Extreme processors are still fairly power hungry. If you haven't already fallen off the edge of your seat, you have our congratulations.

Should I hold back on a Macbook Pro for this, or will it not be implemented in the MB line? I'm getting a MBP for college, but I would definitely hold back for quad core if it was within a year.
Despite the limitations Apple puts on all it's other products the MacBook Pro is always updated with the latest stuff, so if intel does a Quad-Core laptop CPU I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the MacBook Pro soon after.
But if you want Quad-Core right now on a laptop, Clevo makes gaming laptops with Quad-Core Desktop CPUs. Pretty affordable when you get it from Sager
I can see this going into the imac before it makes it to the powerbook
@Ben
Macbook Pro, not Powerbook
Although I can totally see why you still use that. Macbook Pro just doesn't sound as flash as Powerbook
There isn't going to be any in the MBP any time soon, desktop replacements...are gaming machines usually. MPB isn't one of those. I mean they underclock the mobile graphics cards as it is
Man, if they put one of those in a MBP you seriously could use it as a stove.
This chip is a total copout. Wait for Nehalem which gets rid of the FSB..
You can buy a quad core laptop now, and it isn't cheap :)

If it ever is implemented by Apple, the price will probably be up in the mid-MacPro price range. I'm sure it will happen in a couple of years, but don't look for it sooner than that. Apple will stick to faster dual-core Intel chips. Other Wintel manufacturers probably will use the four-core as soon as it's ready.

Fingers crossed for a 17" MacBook Pro w/ this CPU. My hope is that Apple engineers will figure out a way to cram the necessary cooling & a large enough battery into the 17" chassis...
@JohnTitor: yeah, until very recently, I tended to agree with the sentiment that Apple's been pretty good at putting the latest & greatest into the MBPs. The fact that the Core 2 Extreme X9000 2.8GHz is so far MIA on the MBP has me pretty bummed out, though... I hope it's something that will happen in time, rather than a complete pass-over. Hmm, it looks like the X9000 has a TDP of 44W, while the lesser Penryns used in the MBPs are 35W - yikes, that's over a 25% increase!
Yeah, and although the Extreme CPUs are unique in that Intel smiles on OC'ing them, something tells me that Apple won't approve of, unlike the Sager machines.
No Macbook will never have quad core
that ended up meaning that you think that eventually there is gonna be a Macbook with quad core
actually it means that every mac book will have a quad core at some point in its life.
um...ok i said Macbooks will never have a quad core cpu... you dumb fuck
@hackman
No, you didn't say that. If you can't even recognize the mistake from your first post, then I wouldn't be calling others a dumb****, you dumb****
And what has happend to the q9450s? I've been waiting FOREVER! My gaming build is sitting here all wired and ready but no CPU in the slot.
AFAIK, the OEM's already have that chip, so it should be a few more weeks.
CBE laptop? Gahh, this is taking forever. I'd like a Cell /with/ a GPU and 1GB of RAM for something near an acceptable price in a portable form. Sure, I wouldn't be able to run stuff in WINE with great performance, but I... nostalgia aside, I don't think I'd need to.
Here's hoping that the case of such a system that has such a CPU has a little door on it that opens allowing the CPU to be extended via a scissor lift type apparatus into the attachable liquid nitrogen base station....sold separately of course. :-P
Im waitin for the new OCTA CORE!
(8)
why did you have to sing that?
I put 8 in brackets incase we have any loose lightbulbs in here that dont know what Octa means.
They'll definitely be a lap burner. Too hot to handle.

well... heres to 10 min battery life and melted laptop cases from the quad-core heat. I guess you would be lucky if your laptop started the OS before exploding, or just killing the battery. hehe. obviously it will last longer than that, but the Extreme is far too much of a power hog still to dream of any kind of portability in a laptop platform.
kyle reveals plans for quad-core laptop purchaseing
kyle reveals plans for... well, we don't really know...
Can anyone else make sense of that?
that really made no sense.
I thought it was reasonably funny. Pity he can't spell though; it kinda flattened the joke.

Um, when you put it like that you make it sound dirty.
sorry i cant spell. purchasing*
8+ hours in an entry-level laptop would excite me. I couldn't care less about performance 98% of the time.
How's that for some enthusiast pressure, Intel? :p
I want a "leap ahead" in battery life :)

... And that was related to this how...?
The Macbook Pros are already very thin and I am amazed they can cram a full C2D processor and Geforce 8600 graphics card in there. (Granted, I am anti-Apple and have never owned an Apple product nor plan to.)
This Core Quad mobile processor will be Intel's most power-hungry chip and have the highest TDP rating. If this was to go into a Macbook Pro, Apple would really have to thicken up the case to accomodate this procesor, add more vents/fans.
No way they can stick this into the current case as it is now.
But just my guess.
uh you will definitely not see this in macbooks or macbook pros. as stated, its meant for desktop replacement laptops. if you put one of these in a macbook that thing would explode INSTANTLY.
i plan on getting the centrino 2 with my next laptop purchase. i think they said 2.8 ghz for a 45nm processor which i think is awesome.
Its a sad day for me as an AMD fan.
when's the last time AMD fans had a good day?
clearly the words of a fan boy. I don't make fun of Intel. My 3d machine even renders on a Quad from Intel. But you sir, are a fan boy.
Yeah, we really need another fast Intel CPU with crappy Intel graphics!
BusinessWeek: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/07_33/b4046022.htm Basically shows that Intel cannot even play the Sims 2 correctly.
YouTube showing Intel's game peformance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd0Of4PnpQk This shows that even on Intel's latest G33, it cannot play recent games correctly.
Finally, a real process to go with the dual 8800GTS internal cards we've been seeing in laptops.
Other than buying one from Voodoo which runs desktop CPUs, quad core has been (as stated) non existant in laptops. I for one welcome our new quad-core masters.
How many games take actually advantage of four CPU cores? I thought games were GPU limited.
