Screen grabs: Nokia 770 Lives Free, Dies Hard
Screen grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Even the appearance of Justin Long as the scrappy sidekick failed to keep Live Free or Die Hard from so-bad-it's-bad territory -- but the various appearances of a Nokia 770 bestowed with superpowers (sure, all handhelds can sign into satellite phone networks and interface with power station control systems) were pretty entertaining in their own right. We're a little confused, though -- didn't the producers at least realize that our man Bruce would be using an N810 to chat up his fans online, though? One more shot after the break.

So bad its bad?
Tautlogical implications aside, do you, does the esteemed Defense Attorney Zack P. have anything else to say?
I assumed we all missed Ryan's blockbuster hit...
Live free or die hard was a good movie that was well reviewed and made good money. Why bring this up anyway running out of news?
A good movie? You must be kidding me.
It was an okay movie, for a summer blockbuster (compare it to the original Die Hard and you'll see why people are saying the franchise has gone downhill), but it made some hilarious misuses of computers and other gadgets.
Engadget brought it up here because the entire point of this series of articles is to bring up hilarious misuses of computers and other gadgets in films and TV shows.
Whether you liked it or not isn't the point. Everyone's entitled to an opinion. But the problem Ryan Block made here was snarky definitive statement suggesting that the movie is by and large considered by everyone to be not just bad, but "so bad it's bad." The kind of presumptive tone one would use to describe Catwoman, Freddy Got Fingered, etc. Unfortunately he's made a complete ass out of himself in doing so. Die Hard 4 scored 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $130 million or so.
Just a tasteless sign of arrogance and/or ignorance.
...but...it was really, really bad...
Can't you dumb-asses just just read a fucking post without having you poor sensibilities offended.
:)
no cause it wasnt bad u fuckin moron.
Jiminy Christmas, you guys really need to chill out. I was just joking. The smiley face says so.
It just a movie anyways that Ryan didn't like. So what? Just because it made money and has an 80% at RT, everyone should be forced to like it and never badmouth it?
Usually I am not a grammar/spelling nazi, but since this is a gadget blog, I think it may be a good idea to get the name of the product right. I want to point out that it's actually just "Nokia 770", there's no N before the 770. They didn't start adding the N till the N800.
cmon it was prety good
I thought everyone did this with their 770's?
It's a linux device with BT and Wifi captabilites... if you write the right software, why should it not do those things? Besides beeing slow...
This seems somewhat desperate.
WTF are they talking about? The movie effing rawked.
I agree. It was an action movie, and it provided action a plenty. If people expected anything else, they should wait for Sex and the City. Otherwise, gtfo!
As long as you're going to the movie expecting over-the-top action/violence and tons of special effects with very little plot to back it up, it's a very enjoyable movie. I really enjoyed watching it because I know what to expect when I go to a movie like that. Don't get me wrong, I like a good drama or something with a deep and involving plot, but mindless entertainment is great too.
It has always been one of the most cowardly ways to assert expertise, to give bad ratings to generally well liked productions. It saddens me to see that engadget would stoop so low. Man up guys. Dh4 was one of the best action movies in a long time! It even caters to windows fans by presenting the "i'm a mac" guy as a pansy.
Why are people modding this guy up? DH4 was a decent summer movie, but fell way short of the quality of the rest of the series. There have also been way more impressive action movies over the past couple of years.
@tiuk
Fell way short of the rest of the series? Are you kidding me? Have you SEEN Die Hard 2: Die Harder?
I hated the first set of Die Hard movies but this latest one was awesome. Makes me want to go out and watch the other three
I have a 770, as well as a N810. The 770 wasn't part of the N series, that started with the N800.
I actually enjoyed Die Hard 4. I'm waiting for the "Unrated" version on Blu-ray. The action was good, the visuals were great.
I hate to bring a touch of reality to your lives but the function of a Hollywood movie is to make money, not entertain pathetic geekboys. If it makes money it's a good movie. Live with it
Didn't he also use a Nokia 9300 in the movie as well? I could have sworn I saw him using it-and I gotta tell you EDGE speed isn't that blazing fast! It could have been the 9300i (with Wifi), I dunno.
I totally missed the 770. I have one, want the n800.
I guess Mr.Block was running a bit short of Zune bashing material. to bad he spent more time writing this post than he spent on his original Zune 2 review.
engadget is mad becuz the mac guy turned to pc for help.
Why can't people just spell 'because' correctly?
becuz it saves time.
Now I know those guys were computer geniuses if they could get the 770 to perform those tricks, what next the n95 actually making a phone call?
Check out where the thing is mounted, there is absolutely no usable purpose other than to look cool. It is physically impossible to look at the screen and touch it simultaneously like that. Also look closely and you'll see that the all white screen is rocking the "charging" logo. They couldn't even bother to turn the damn thing on! I'm sure every geek out there cringed whenever they dumbed down h4cking or teh internetz for mass audiences. See penny-arcade:

I posted this a while ago.
looks like Engadget took the screen shot I made off my server.

LOL Nokia was all over this movie, there was more than just the 770:
There was the E61i, a 9300 & the awesome/huge E90 that the "mac" was using....
on the screen, that's just the powered off charging icon... at least in fantastic four they had it running an app or a video file or something
80% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Just sayin'.
