LG's Flatron LX206WU joins the multiple USB display party
We're not sure why hooking up six displays has suddenly become the new USB multiple-monitor demo of choice, but LG isn't one to let Samsung have all the glory -- the company's showing off the multiple-display capabilities of the just-announced the USB-capable 20.1-inch Flatron LX206WU, which outguns Sammy's UbiSync 940UX by a single, triumphant inch. The LX is actually just a minor rev of the L206WU, adding in DVI and VGA connections so Mac and Linux peeps can get at that 5000:1 contrast ratio and 2ms response time -- just like the similarly DisplayLink-based 940UX, USB connections are Windows-only. No word on Stateside availability, but if you're headed to Korea we hear a smile and 390,000 won ($388) should do the trick.

Talk about a waste of money.
LiqwidZero @ Mar 24th 2008 2:35PM
Errr.... not really. I'd love to see how three monitors would do on my machine, and this would save money on an extra video card, which I really wouldn't want to buy.
ReggieXuk @ Mar 24th 2008 2:43PM
3 screens isn't 6 though is it?
LiqwidZero @ Mar 24th 2008 9:01PM
No, it isn't. Six screens is overkill, in my opinion.
It's like stating "I'm going to daisy-chain 127 USB devices together, just because I hear it can be done."
Jennifer @ Mar 24th 2008 2:48PM
hmmmm. im gonna take all six and attatch them to one chair... then ill enter the matrix.

thats what she said

That one inch more translates to acres of screen area.

Im interested in the babe rather than the tech.
1 babe > 6 screens.

I had no idea one could hear smiles.

Puts my 2x 24" monitors to shame... :P
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Mar 24th 2008 3:54PM
Geeze I think it was the psp homebrew scene that first enabled USB to monitor video streaming.
Why are these huge companies only now getting to it? The psp has been able to do it for almost two years. Do you think they ripped off the psp homebrew? I do...

That's the technology powering these USB monitors. Read all about it through the link above. (The vids are quite enlightening.)

So, is this a monitor with USB in addition to the regular DVI/VGA? That's kinda cool...I could use it as a regular monitor with a proper connector, or lug it around when I needed a USB connection. Or lug laptops over to it.
Ok, on second thought, this really isn't all that useful.
L.Rawlins @ Mar 24th 2008 4:36PM
Since notebooks only tend to ship with one external video output, this enables a furthur six. Whether or not you want to daisy-chain a furthur six screens is irrelevant. The point is that you CAN now drive another monitor over USB on your desk, should you wish.

Ahhhh! Hepta-dodeco monitor isolation tanks must be right around the corner... Guess then I'll have to have to navigate on over to EngadgetSurround™

Is it me... or is the back left one semi-transparent? o_O

"Mac and Linux peeps"
Thank you for acknowledging our existence. I really do appreciate that.

How is this different from the LG L206WU that was launched in the US last October and in the UK last month?
Engadget covered this story in July last year. The L206WU has the exact same specs, just no 'X' in the model number...

Tim Sanchez @ Mar 24th 2008 10:50PM
You're exactly right Andy_C. Sad thing is you can't buy either one. Nobody in the US has the L206WU in stock.
Sauerkraut @ Mar 24th 2008 10:53PM
How much is the one on the far right? lol

Just a quick note on UK availability for the L206WU...
LG UK has NO IDEA about who stocks their monitor, I've had several useless emails from them saying that specific retailers have the monitor, when those retailers subsequently say they've never heard of it.
Anyway, enough rant. I've found some retailers that stock it, and it's available online today, April 1st 2008 (not an April Fool's joke) at the following (and probably others retailers too):

LG should pay me and sack their sales staff! (Sorry, more gratuitous rant).
