PS3 2.20 update to offer portable copy of Blu-ray films to PSP?
If PCWorld is correct, then it looks like Sony's pending, PS3 2.20 firmware will have at least one little surprise for movie buffs. As if the inclusion of Blu-ray's BD-Live interactivity and the removal of the 2GB DivX and WMV file-size cap wasn't enough, PCWorld says that you can also expect the introduction of portable copy. With it, users will be able to copy a PSP formatted (and DRM'd) version of the film directly to their PSP -- no UMD required. Right, just like we saw demonstrated live back at CES in January.Update: There's a rumor that Sony's portable copy would transcode any Blu-ray film into a PSP version. That's not how we understand it. The firmware update would just allow the PS3 to "see" the portable copy already burned into some Blu-ray discs and then make it available for transfer to your PSP. Think Digital Copy for Sony's gear, not Apple's.
Update 2: Sony just pinged us to say that Portable Copy won't be coming with the 2.20 release -- bummer. We'll be waiting, guys.

another Sony format that is destined to fail before it is even created??
It's an idea, not a format. Sooner or later (and with BD being the only kid on the block, probably sooner), I see it possible for Blu-ray disc to offer digital copy for other than the PS3/PSP combo. It would be nice, esp. for the more casual consumer, to be able to legally copy their BD movies to a HD on their BD players.
wow.. this is great news for sony. They might actually have something this time round.
I'm actually now inclined to buy a PS3 now. However, I believe the "Digital Copy" will be something like iTunes digital copy, if not the same thing. That might be why the word "iTunes" is not mentioned on any digital copy DVD. It may just be Sony supporting the method. This is not as good of news if true because users of digital copy can only transfer ONE digital copy, and that's it. So, if you wanted one for your iPod and your PSP, you're screwed.
Also, yeah, flash memory is INSANELY cheap. When the PSP came out, I bought my 512mb memory stick for $80. that's right, that was brand new. a 1gb was $110, so be thankful it's so cheap. After all, an 8gb piece of flash costs about $15; the rest is inflation and implementation.
The only "digital copy" DVD I have is Family Guy's Blue Harvest, which specifically mentions Windows Media Player and iTunes, as it provides DRM-copies of the DVD in those two formats. Of course this was an initiative by Fox and Apple because no one was doing anything in terms of digital copy, so maybe you are talking about something else.
that's exactly what i'm talking about
what if this is the same thing Fox is doing, which means limited options, which is not good.
I was just saying that if Sony is the next partner for Digital Copy [Fox initiated the deal, not Apple, they just cooperated, that's why you don't see any Apple logos on the box for digital copy products], then users could only retrieve the digital copy one time. Which means if they support digital copy for blu-ray, no doubt they'll support it for plain DVDs. Deductive reasoning concludes that if you redeemed it on a PS3, it could not be done again for you iPod.
just speculation though
This was shown to me at CES this year. There will be a 1gb copy of the movie on all BluRay discs and if you go into the BDlive menu you can copy the movie to your PSP.
The movie itself will be formatted for the PSP and like i said be approx 1gb in size
not to bad sony...
When will we actually see a game that utilizes the PSP and the PS3? Thats the reason I got the both of them. But I have yet to find a good game or any major games that can utilize the PSP, I think they are missing out on a LOT of opportunities. if nothing else it can be a great accessory screen while you are playing the game.
