PSP to get ColorWared on April 14th
Look, who could blame you for wanting to personalize your PSP a little. At the moment you can wait around for limited edition models like the God of War or get your kitchen-beige or month-old-mint models from a friendly, price-gouging, Japanese importer. Else, why not hold out until April 14th when ColorWare plans to unveil its new PSP colorization service. Although nothing has been announced, it's probably safe to assume the same level of "buy new" or "send in" service ColorWare already offers for the DS Lite.

anyone tried getting a DS lite sprayed? how did it go? is the paint lasting?
Tinu @ Mar 25th 2008 4:44PM
It would be nice to have the ability to go into Settings >> Change Color and be able to select any color you want for the faceplate lol :D
Hey I should patent that idea! :D

You'd be on to a winner. Remember the news about nissan...

This is the most useless and ugly imho waste of money that one could possibly think of.
Just get decals or stick on cases for 10-20$, and change them when you are bored!
Bob @ Mar 25th 2008 8:37AM
Well, it's obviously not useless in everyone's "IMHO."

As someone who bought a 4th gen 40 GB iPod from them two years before Apple came out w/ black iPods, I can certainly tell you that it's not a waste. If I'm spending $400 on a product, shouldn't it look the way I want it to? Pretty much all customization is "wasted" if you want to look at it like that (why change my desktop wallpaper? I can look at a picture on the internet if I want a change of view!) but there are people who don't mind paying a bit more for looks. (That said, the $500+ for painting your computer is a bit ricockulous if you ask me.)
y3k.nik @ Mar 25th 2008 3:55PM
I looked at the DS customization prices, and for a complete overhaul of the entire body, I would be paying two times more than what I paid for my DS.
I am not against customization, but this is just a little bit ridiculous.

The PSP needs a refresh of HW. I want something with 802.11n with a faster processor, smaller form factor, better GPU and no UMD slor (only downloadable games). Please give it a SD slot instead of MS, 8gb internal memory and a slideunder keyboard.
I will buy this for $350.
Thanks
Deluxe @ Mar 25th 2008 7:25AM
No UMD and no MS? While I agree that may seem like a good idea, it's completely impractical and not at all a viable business/brand option. I won't bother going in to detail, the plethora of reasons are pretty self explanitory.
The only device that these things would be useful in would be a true PSP-2. Then the wish list comes out. No UMD, Fully downloadable games, touch screen, keyboard, two nubs, open bluetooth, toaster, hoverboard etc.
But I mean come on people, *think* before you say some of these things!
Olivier @ Mar 25th 2008 7:30AM
Deluxe,
I said no MS, but a SD card slot instead. SDs are much cheaper and ubiquous than the MS Pro Duos.
The PSP is 3 years old and as a device with technology/graphics as its advantage over the Nintendo DS than these featuresa re becoming less and less appealing.
The UMD makes the PSP more expensive, bigger, more fragile. Something with simple memory slots would be much nicer.
Sony unfortunately has a very large ego and doesn't usually giveup on its proprietary formats (such as UMD and MS). There is hope however as proves their abandon of Atrac3
Bob @ Mar 25th 2008 8:37AM
Wow, YOU would buy it for $350??? I'm sure Sony will get right on that!
Nomi @ Mar 25th 2008 8:56AM
I think the point Deluxe is trying to make is that MS is Sony's format, and they can't just drop it and use SD, considering MS has been pretty successful. I mean, most, if not all, Sony cameras use MS and that Sony has around 20% market share in the US.
jacquerr @ Mar 25th 2008 9:51AM
Does sony even make SD cards? Why if they don't would they want to put that into a system they own??

4GB Memory Stick at Amazon.com = $30.39 http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Memory-SDMSPDH-4096-901-Retail-Package/dp/B000EWE3GQ/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1206455304&sr=8-3
4GB SD Mem Card at Amazon.com = $22.48 http://www.amazon.com/Sandisk-Memory-SDSDH-4096-Static-Reader/dp/B000PO3CTM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1206455390&sr=1-1
A whole $8 bucks different.
Olivier @ Mar 25th 2008 10:57AM
@Ksparaydad
Funny would choose the 4gb versions..
For 8gb, an SD will run you $42 on Amazon, while a MS Pro-Duo will run you $74...
Want to check that for 16gb?
Ace b @ Mar 25th 2008 6:26PM
they're not gonna take out the umd and just make it digital distribution.some people actually like to have the real game in their hands instead of being just vaporware.
And i think i covered the bases of what they need to put in the psp2 http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/24/psp-turns-three-sniff/2#c11242395
Kspraydad @ Mar 25th 2008 9:13PM
@Olivier
I picked a 4GB as it is plenty for the majority of PSP owners.
On my 4GB right now I have 3 movies, 5 music albums, 50 pictures, a total of 10 audio RSS feeds and 5 video RSS feeds, game saves and 13 demos. I still have 600mb free.

They don't even have to add the toaster and hoverboard. Just a jet engine.
How long does this coloware color last? is it scratch proof or ..... I don't know. What... cmaaan.
Silas Miller @ Mar 25th 2008 9:13AM
make it rubberized, with gaskets. i need to psp while I snorkel.
hypereric @ Mar 25th 2008 10:20AM
I dunno. I still like the panty-hose colored one the best. On an entirely unrelated note: do these things have like a 'rumble' feature?
DrXym @ Mar 25th 2008 10:25AM
Who the hell wants to get their PSP repainted? It's virtually guaranteed to look horrible with a strong possibility that that the paint will stain your hands / clothes, or flake off or be itself stained with palm sweat.
Cruzader @ Mar 25th 2008 10:49AM
Think of the paint they use on automobiles. Now imagine that paint on a PSP. I hardly doubt sweat will ruin it.
Also, Colorware coats it with some sort of clear coat to make is pretty much scratch resistant- again think car paint.
However, the paint might chip if you drop your item hard enough or enough times. My colorware ipod has a few specs missing from dropping it a few times.
Brian f @ Mar 26th 2008 3:00AM
Has anyone here gotten this done? I'm wondering what they use to coat it and if it adds any unwanted thickness to the unit. It if does I'd rather use some high quality model paint like Tamiya and do it myself. Around here somewhere I have an old Nokia I sprayed with Tamiya BaySide Blue metallic using an undercoat of white, then BaySide Blue and finished it off with a thin coat of clear. This was like 10 years ago and it never wore down. Those old Nokias were tanks, we called mine "God Phone" because it had been thrown from a speeding vehicle and left for days till I came back and called it to find it in the bushes. That phone also went swimming twice and still got great reception out in the middle of the desert. BTW BaySide Blue Metallic was the color they used on the R34 GT-R, a car which I was and still am totally obsessed with.
