As someone who bought a 4th gen 40 GB iPod from them two years before Apple came out w/ black iPods, I can certainly tell you that it's not a waste. If I'm spending $400 on a product, shouldn't it look the way I want it to? Pretty much all customization is "wasted" if you want to look at it like that (why change my desktop wallpaper? I can look at a picture on the internet if I want a change of view!) but there are people who don't mind paying a bit more for looks. (That said, the $500+ for painting your computer is a bit ricockulous if you ask me.)
