Not too long ago, we gave you loyal Cloudbook owners a chance to
voice your opinion on how you'd change things. Fast forward a few weeks, and take a gander at what Everex has put together. Debuting today at CTIA 2008, the Cloudbook MAX not only boasts an 8.9-inch WVGA (1,024 x 600) display, Windows Vista, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, integrated GPS receiver, 2-megapixel webcam and a battery good for four hours, but it also features an 80GB HDD, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, audio in / out and an S-Video output. Beyond all that, this thing gets energized by a 1.6GHz VIA C7-M ULV processor coupled with the VX800 digital media IGP chipset, which touts full DirectX 9 support and video acceleration for MPEG-2, MPEG-4, WMV9, VC1 and DivX video formats (plus a VMR-capable HD video processor, among other things). Lastly, the unit includes built-in support for Sprint's
XOHM WiMAX network. Brimming with excitement yet? Start stocking that piggy bank -- this currently unpriced rig will be available in the latter half of this year across North America.

Just please put an Intel processor and I'm happy. Via is still just too slow for me, sorry.
Otherwise, the design is far better, good job Everex! : D
Chebwa @ Apr 1st 2008 4:40PM
Via + Vista... sounds like a sure fire recipe for the "Classic" desktop theme if you want to get anything done.
jimmy @ Apr 3rd 2008 12:02AM
I agree about the intel processor but they might not be ready until June. Also i feel like the trackpad is kind of tiny. I mean look at it comparing to the ethernet port! It must be less than 3 cm by 5 cm. i feel like Asus made the right move by increasing the size of the trackpad in its EEE 900. And those FCC multi-touch things that were filed for the EEE show some potential. Even if it is a blatant ripoff of an Apple patent. (Vista fanboys may now explain why im a noob and should go away) WIN 2K FTMFW!
Wes @ Apr 1st 2008 3:57PM
Any word on when XOHM is officially coming to the US? there is a lot of talk about wimax-capable products and no wimax.
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Apr 1st 2008 3:58PM
LOVING THE MAGENTA, I guess you really want to stick it to them at Douche bag Telecoms. It's a great look and is pleasing to my eyes. Keep it! Like who can control colour, next thing you know some moron will be after you for the word gadget.......
This lappy is sweet are they available to us Canadians! Whom also love magenta! LOL you guys are a RIOT!
Fall-Apart @ Apr 1st 2008 4:01PM
One wonders why this wasn't their opening offering. If the price is right, it could have been a far superior competitor to the Eee PC. I feel they've lost a huge amount of momentum with their stumbling on launching the original Cloudbook. Too bad, because this looks promising...
Eric M. @ Apr 1st 2008 4:19PM
Well I'm betting that this will be the most expensive non-expensive lappy to come out. Nice to know people are forming a high end for the low end lappys. I'm sure Sony is next to hop on this bandwagon.
shakes2 @ Apr 1st 2008 5:02PM
If it comes with Linux for less then this might be a possibility. I'll still be waiting on comparison in functionality between this and the 8.9" EEE running Linux. (Patiently tapping foot)
pjwalmsley @ Apr 1st 2008 4:01PM
*Praying it doesn't come with Vista.
Jamma @ Apr 1st 2008 4:16PM
Oh Come On, Vista's fine when you've got 2GB of RAM. I've had it for a year without any major problems, and SP1 has reduced the minor ones.

Argh double post....stupid vista!

Wow! It seems everex has turned this lappie from a doorstop into an attractive product overnight! Good for them. Hey, maybe they were reading the engadget forums?
Long Live Magneta!!!!!

Is that webcam on the rear? As in on the lid..
kam @ Apr 1st 2008 4:04PM
wow, this is actually amazing.
gps, 80gig hd, bluetooth, a decent web cam AND 2 gigs to boot? plus they peaced out the weird track pad and the empty space under the screen! im sorry but bye bye eee 2.0. as long as the battery is a real 4 hours and this puppy comes in at sub-$500
aardvark sandwich @ Apr 1st 2008 4:05PM
Wow this is MUCH better than the first version.
Hopefully it will be released on schedule this time.
initialxy @ Apr 1st 2008 4:07PM
wow this is actually pretty sweet! how much is it?
billmao @ Apr 1st 2008 4:10PM
Oh fer god's sake take vista outta that poor thing.
Vista runs great on desktops and good NBs but not a friggen UMPC, man!
Chris @ Apr 1st 2008 4:12PM
Hey Engadget, since Gizmodo has gona all Mr. T crazy you guys should go Chuck Noris on their ass tomorrow!
decapitor @ Apr 1st 2008 4:14PM
i really wonder if some of these 8.9 inch eee competitors are going to keep it under $500. The ECS G10L and HP2133 look like they may be more than 500, and this cloudbook has similar/better specs. ideally these 8.9 inchers would just replace the 7 inch screens in current generations since the overall case size is relatively unaffected. if they can get something like this cloudbook under 500, preferably 400 then i think they will attract a lot more customers, and thank goodness there's a lot of competition starting up in this area so the prices will be in check.
Fusion @ Apr 1st 2008 4:19PM
theve finaly made a umpc laptop, thats actualy good, how much will this version cost
Nate @ Apr 1st 2008 4:21PM
Am I the only one wondering why the hell Everex even bothered with the first Cloudbook, when they had this one waiting in the wings.
They should do themselves a favor, and call this thing something other than "Cloudbook". That name may be too tainted by the time this thing comes out.
Fusion @ Apr 1st 2008 4:21PM
theve finaly made a umpc laptop, thats actualy good, how much will this version cost,
THIS ONE VERSION LOOKS STUNNING, AND HAS THE FEATURES TO MATCH
L @ Apr 1st 2008 4:24PM
Wow - this is actually really nice! Could care less about the WiMAX thing as an European, but the rest is still great.
Quite likely I'd either get some variant of that (if it ever comes to Europe) or a HP 2133...hmmm...nice to have more good choices :D
apeguero @ Apr 1st 2008 4:25PM
Is it touch screen? I bought the Sony UX-380 from eBay, brand new for $900.00. Really nice little machine. First thing I did was dump Vista Business for XP. Boy, what a difference in performance. I like Vista but it really demands higher performing computers in order for it to work well and I'm afraid these UMPCs are too castrated to run Vista how it's supposed to be run. So, I only hope Everex will offer XP as an option. Also, the touch screen makes these ultra-portables so much nice to handle when there's no desk around.
Looks expensive though. I'll guess topping $900.00 easily.
Mike P. @ Apr 1st 2008 4:46PM
You mean... "across North America, not including Canada." Probably.
Big Rhonda @ Apr 1st 2008 5:01PM
It says on the Everex site that it will be running Vista Home Basic so maybe it won't be so demanding on the resources.
antiver @ Apr 1st 2008 5:07PM
Finally, something to compete with the Eee PC for my cash! (screw all those other goofy umpc concoctions)
Khoa Khuong @ Apr 1st 2008 5:15PM
Why is the headphone port pink and the mic port blue? It breaks convention!
bot @ Apr 1st 2008 5:50PM
That does sound a lot nicer than the old model. It still seems to be missing the mark though. Asus had/has it right with their tiny computers but all these other manufacturers are taking the idea and kind of ruining it. Maybe it's just me and a few other people but when I think ultra portable I think small, lightweight, responsive, and durable. Trying to get a full-fledged laptop in a ultra portable frame is a mighty hard task and I feel like the hardware isn't quite there yet. What I don't want is the computer to take forever to load up Windows just for the sake of having the newest OS, and I don't want to have to worry about my hard drive failing due to the excessive traveling it will encounter.
Dalcébolus @ Apr 1st 2008 5:50PM
Why does it have one USB port upside down? Smells like a very elaborate April 1st joke...
Tired_ @ Apr 1st 2008 5:51PM
Dammit! I was hoping they'd refresh (read: fix) the internal hardware, but keep the handy carrying hole.
Blaine Oliver @ Apr 1st 2008 6:22PM
Fake..... Webcam on outside, vista on via chip and HD decoding?
Balzac @ Apr 1st 2008 6:38PM
I liked the old case design more, without the softer curves.
I like to see the plastic case formed around the components in a utilitarian style.
I'd rather it not look quite so consumer-friendly.
I'm going to buy one of these because the eee's specs are too low. The bigger screen seals the deal.
However, I will refuse to buy one of these unless it comes without Vista.
Ricardo @ Apr 1st 2008 6:56PM
Add a 16 GB SSD option and you can count me in.
Valgas @ Apr 2nd 2008 2:36AM
Wow man. This thing seriously looks like people should seriously consider seriously investing in this. This is seriously a true UMPC and I applaud Everex for actually trying! Even more serious props to them if they actually prove they actually want people to buy it by pricing it between $500 - $600+$50 or if it has to be any more - $10 more. Lots of WIN if they do this.
qwert @ Apr 3rd 2008 6:06AM
AHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!!ELEVEN!!!!!!!
i hate you ;)
Benton Pena @ Apr 13th 2008 11:42AM
Does anybody know XOHM working frequency and spectrum? I guess it's 2.5 Ghz... I googled but found nothing.
Ron @ May 19th 2008 10:52PM
Looks like an almost perfect system with the exception of the cpu. Why go with an outdated and underpowered Via C7 cpu when there are others out there that do a much better job. Hopefully they won't make the same mistake that HP did with their 2133 when they used the Via C7. I'm thinking the Intel Atom or even the upcoming Via Isaiah. We'll see.
