We puzzled over Microsoft's cryptic statements at CeBIT that the Eee's "
other requirements" would lead to an adjustment of the Windows 7 timeline, and it looks like our first guess was spot-on: Microsoft will be making Windows XP available for Eee-class ultraportables until 2010, and possibly later. Demand for XP on devices like the Eee and Intel's Classmate machines has prompted MS to reconsider
axing XP entirely this June: the company will now sell XP Home through at least June 2010, and for one year after the
release of Windows 7 -- which means sales of XP could stretch into 2012. There's no word on if the build of XP Home targeted at the ultraportable laptop set will be different from regular XP builds, but we doubt there'll be many changes -- it'll be awfully sad if people are still clamoring for XP more than a decade after its initial release, though.

Lets see if I can reply, firefox 2.0.0.13
Take a hardcore linux user and give him hardcore Pr0n. Oh the.... wait a minute
reply didn't work to 3 pages ago so I don't expect anyone to get this
but that's not to say you can't get it if you do get it
Right on, ride on. Three years from now, when these former XP-haters (and current-Vista haters) are running a rock-solid Vista on their portable quad-cores, we can laugh at their silly Windows 7- hatin'.
I still use XP. . . On my MacBook, in Parallels. It works great when it's contained within the confines of OS X.
Ahh. VirtuaGirl HD in OS X. The only thing Windows XP is good for. . .
lol, I hope they bring out SP3 soon... they're not doing this is because they want to make people use Vista... and if they do sell XP to 2011 then it'll be the longest lived OS ever...
Pfft, I'm still on MSDOS, Windows 3.1 is too much of a resource hog.
Unbelievable -
People waxing poetic about XP (the OS everyone hated before Vista and Leopard came along)and Microsoft constantly resurrecting the dead because it's current OS is a failure and it is incapable of producing a new lightweight OS suitable for devices like the eeePC and Classmate....
Selling the same creaky OS (albeit with SPs) for over a decade does not signify a good and worthy OS - simply a lazy manufacturer out to squeeze blood from a stone and users who simply aren't vocal enough in their demands and/or bright enough to look elsewhere for their computing needs.
Hardly surprising then that the original eeePC came with Linux - and that many are sticking with it despite the recent 'upgrade' to XP....
tried one of these the other day. Lovely and small, but it is almost impossible to use because it is so slow. The keyboard is horribly unresponsive. Unfortunately it screams it's $299. Now apple, I want one THIS small, but mac quality! I don't care if it costs $1000!
"People waxing poetic about XP (the OS everyone hated before Vista and Leopard came along)..."
We didn't appreciate how good we had it until we saw something worst.
ME worked great when you treated it like linux and changed everything before using it.
Windows 2000 is blazing fast on a Core2Duo I decided to install it on a customer's PC with a new motherboard, CPU, RAM and PSU so he could use his old crappy pilot log type program that doesn't work on Vista. It was so blazingly fast and whisper quiet I should have been wearing a seatbelt! Popped Servie Pack 4 on and some security no problem. I was so impressed my next PC will be powered by Windows 2000. The drivers that came with the MSI motherboard were compaible with Windows 2000 and everything checked out just fine :-)
Ahh, you don't read much do you Cheese? It's not just Apple Lovers knocking Vista, it's MS Lovers too. The reason why XP is going to stay around is because: it's not a resource hog - which Vista is, it's not sluggish - which Vista is, and it's not bloated and ridiculously expensive - which Vista definitely is. Microsoft realized this (a little too late perhaps) and is quickly coming out with a replacement with Windows7. Hell, some say that running Windows Server2008 in 'Workstation' mode is a better replacement to XP than Vista. Vista has it's problems and the community will tell you it's bad when it is bad. Now get off the Apple lovers/haters kick and go read some more Vista articles before making comments like that.
Not sure what the speed issue was, ecobore - but then, I own the 4G ($399) model and there may be something there. But bear in mind you're only dealing with 512 RAM, a lightweight processor and a small SSD for all its needs.
My 4G runs fast enough for most stuff (including GIMP and Google Earth - not exactly 'lite' programs)and there is a certain charm to be booted up from cold in 30 seconds.
So its unlikely a build issue thats the problem here. Well that, and the tiny little issue that ASUS builds under contract for Apple. That rather defeats your argument re: Mac quality.
Except where you're correct - Apple would ding you $1000 for the same thing.
I took Vista and, being a bit more than a novice, removed, replaced or adjusted all the bits and pieces of the Vista OS until it ran as well as XP does.. (I suggest checking out http://www.spacetime.com/ for an example of cool browser replacements.. Aero is only eye candy, after all).
Results ? I wound up with XP! Very little of vista is relavent or applicable for the home user. Very little of vista is such an improvement over XP it warrents dumping XP.
The continued delays by consumers and businesses to upgrade to Windows Vista is growing very tiresome. Microsoft needs to completely kill off XP, stop supporting it and force manufacturers to stop providing it, including through workarounds. The sooner everyone stops bitching and moaning the better. Vista has been out for almost 18 months people, XP is done.
