Rewind back to late 2006. The PS3 was launching alongside the Wii and geeky editors like ourselves were having a field day. We'd already managed to convince our
good pal Ben Heck to build another
Xbox 360 laptop and the
Wii Laptop, so it was only a matter of time before we started brainstorming on how the hell we could possibly fit a PS3 into a "portable" enclosure. That's the part where Ben stepped up his game and worked his magic -- on and off for almost a year and a half -- to build... the PS3 Laptop!
The essential specs:
- Original backwards compatible 60GB model
- 17-inch LCD HDTV screen: 720p
- HDMI-DVI connection (same as last Xbox 360 laptop)
- Built-in keyboard, USB ports, stereo speakers, headphone jack
- Size: 17 x 13.75 x 3-inches
- Weight: 16 pounds!
You want this one of a kind piece of kit for your very own, PlayStation fanboys? You got it. We're auctioning this thing for charity real soon, so watch out for details (we'll also have some video of the PS3 Laptop in action on the site tomorrow). And, naturally, big ups to our pal
Ben Heck for the long hours and love he put into this thing. The man is truly a hero of ours, so be sure to
hit up his site to check out his other projects, as well as the other instructional stuff he's done
here on Engadget.
Update: Video of it in action is now live,
check it out here!

I realize I'm just one of a few billion people on the internet but...
This is easily the most amazing thing (coupled with the ones for xbox 360 and wii) that I have 'ever' seen on the internet.
A decade of internet surfing (not continuously obviously) and I have to say I've never seen something that impressed me so much.
I've seen cats flush toilets, kids like themselves on fire, presidents steal elections, and I've even watched myself fall 20 feet onto the back of my neck and survive (hit a decomposing tree).
But I have never seen something so remarkable done by an everyday joe.
Goddamn...that is...wow.
Alright time to see if I can convince my girlfriends father to build one once the instructions are up (or once I locate them if they are up). I dunno if he's quite as talented as you however..
I feel like a school girl who's 20 feet away from a freshly showered Justin Timberlake.

Hey, nice job!
Clearly, you did a pretty good job of fitting everything in there. What types of cooling did you use? I don't really know what's in the current PS3. I'm assuming a decent heatsink/s and a couple fans, but it seems you could do a similar job with less space by more strategically manipulating heat with liquid cooling, etc. So, just curious what you used.
Another quick(maybe stupid) question: When did the manufacture of the chip hardware in the version of the PS3 you used begin? It said "original backwords compatible 60GB model", so this means it's the original PS3? That's very impressive!
Again, thanks!

It looks like the Dell Latitude XFR in a way. I'll stick with my Xbox 360, online play, i hear, is better.

Make it smaller and distribute it, (without Sony knowing of course) and you would be rich. Also, cheap would be good, all hail Costco!!!!

A month and a half later, I'm just finding it hard to stop laughing at how so many people could spend that much time discussing this thing, and not one person noticed this.. Ask yourselves this question:
Why is there a Windows key.. on a Playstation 3???
:)

Cool! I would have bought a PS3 if it looked that way, good artistic feel to it. Good job on the speakers.

This is a great invention. But does any body know how to contact Ben Heck I tried to e-mail him but it doesn't show his e-mail.I'm just trying to find out I can buy one of his portable systems. I really want th Atari 800 s.
darkangel1300 @ Jun 27th 2008 10:47PM
may be that's invention was a great... but if you going to think it's
just like a LAPTOP can play a PS3 Games... there are so many things
that you will do on that... unlike you make a program that can play
the PS3 games...and USB controler >.<

Mark had 2 arguments, Screen and Keyboard, with 2 lines you can knock out half his argument and leave him scratching his head. Stop focusing on how he is badmouthing the PS3 Laptop, and focus on how week his argument is, and how much of an epic fail is exsistance is.
On the PS3P, EPIC! Well done mate, you make the rest of us proud to be the same species as you.
P.S I read page 1, can't be arsed reading beyond that, so if this has already been mentioned, mi bad.
Cheers
Naz
