ASUS Eee PC overclocking looks surprisingly easy
Have an Eee PC? Did your friend's overclocked OLPC get you thinking about just how much more horsepower you can eke out of that little beast? Say no more -- with a little hackery you too can join the 900MHz+ Eeelite with your ASUS cheaptop. Looks like there are apps for both Windows and Linux to get the job done, just don't come crying to us about melted legs or -- worse still -- a busted computer.

Wow...I know you guys don't have time to look around for everything but this is really old new. There was even an unofficial "test" bios Asus leaked that gave you the choice of 900MHz (0501 bios). And you can overclock it the old fashioned way (any standard overclocking program) or ones specifically designed for the Eee like eeectl.
Also, you can use the 0501 bios or eeectl to increase the screens brightness to about double it's normal highest (the screen is rated higher but Asus never officially made it brighter, perhaps battery life issues).

First people buy a ******* piece of **** and then want to overclock it because its too slow. A friggin PC needs 4 gb of RAM not hard disk space!
Blaz @ Apr 12th 2008 6:45AM
He's right, it's at least 5 months old:

Jaquin,
Do you have website that I can subscribe to.
I have a really itch to criticse the crap out of something....and show how really up to date and knowledgeable I am. Coz I really am.
Got any ideas ?
Juaquin @ Apr 12th 2008 5:06AM
You could try 4chan?
I wasn't trying to be a jerk, but if you're going to post a story about some "new" feature (especially linking to spam instead of the original threads or the software creator's website) you should at least research it. If you're interested in Eeectl or other forms of Eee overclocking I suggest forum.eeeuser.com
Juaquin @ Apr 12th 2008 5:24AM
Here's the "official" thread for eeectl: http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=8808
And here's the author's website (he accepts donations if you feel so inclined): http://www.cpp.in/dev/eeectl/
Once again, I apologize if I came off a little blatant, but I just want to make sure the author gets recognition - he's worked really hard on this program (he even worked on it after his own Eee was fried) and has since stopped active development after people accused it as being a virus (crappy AVG interpreted the built-in donate button to be a virus, it has since been removed even though it was never a threat).
j_g_puff @ Apr 12th 2008 5:51AM
I actually found Juaquin's post very interesting. If anyone deserves criticism it's Kurian, but I suspect that he's joking.
steve @ Apr 12th 2008 5:01AM
While i welcome the freedom to overclock, i hope no-one baught the Eee with performance computing in mind.
Sam @ Apr 12th 2008 10:52AM
"baught"?
I normally hate to be a comment grammar/spelling nazi but that is just bad.
dagamer34 @ Apr 12th 2008 5:14AM
ASUS Eee PC overclocking unsurprisingly not safe!
Matt @ Apr 12th 2008 5:21AM
I'm already over the Eee PC. Anything at that price with that much bezel needs to tell their story walking. It looks like a digital photo frame for Christ sake. The larger screen model is not realistically priced to boot.
That said, props to Asus for pioneering this segment of the market. Thank you, buta the Eee needa more sexy.
YoYoYo @ Apr 12th 2008 12:29PM
Like the Eee PC900 three stories up?
Matt @ Apr 12th 2008 2:13PM
"The larger screen model is not realistically priced to boot."
Like the one I already mentioned?
mcdizzle895 @ Apr 12th 2008 2:19PM
He's right though, that IS a sh*tload o' bezel! Great vocab. Matt!
adrian @ Apr 12th 2008 6:22AM
Heck...I need some other things too;
Anybody got:
- A dictionary
- A sense of grammer
- A sense of humour
- A coffee
?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Sebastian @ Apr 12th 2008 7:57AM
Hah, that's funny…
- A dictionary
- A sense of grammer
well, I let you figure out what's wrong here…
Hans @ Apr 12th 2008 1:31PM
"well, I let you figure out what's wrong here…"
That's funny to me. Poor grammar abounds.
schongux @ Apr 12th 2008 6:24AM
I won't do it

Said Heng Ha Djet, shortly before unlocking the clock on his tiny eee. The heat from the CPU caused the battery to combust, singing his naughty bits.
Jason @ Apr 12th 2008 9:20AM
10% overclock seems pretty pointless for the eeepc. Guess this is for the impatient hotheads who need to open their net browser a shod faster..
d0od @ Apr 12th 2008 10:35AM
"First people buy a ******* piece of **** and then want to overclock it because its too slow. A friggin PC needs 4 gb of RAM not hard disk space!"
wtf?!
the eeepc isn't designed for COD or shizzle. Its a portable device for checking emails and surfing the net etc - don't be sucha retard and assume people buy it not knowing what it is.
And actually, the cpu out performs a lot of other supposedly faster cpu's i nother UMPC's [that stands for something, ultra-mobile Portable computer/personal computer]
the eeepc with linux and 2gb ram is really quick for whats it's designed to be... infact more so! so go educate urself!
Chris @ Apr 12th 2008 10:55AM
I wonder if the future models(the ones with Atom) will be able to be Oc'd. You could probably get a nice overclock considering the low power they draw.
Steffen Jobbs @ Apr 12th 2008 11:16AM
That's a new new word I've never heard before. A "cheaptop."
It probably doesn't make much sense to overclock such an inexpensive computer, but it's fun to try to get every little bit more speed you can out of it. Just keep boosting up the speed until it get's a bit unstable, then just back it down a bit. As long as you don't completely rely on your and made a backup of your drive it's okay to have a little fun.
I'll always welcome the option of being able to overclock a machine.
Rachel @ Apr 12th 2008 11:41AM
Hmn. I knew about the overclocking already, but here's a real question: where the heck is the 8.9inch eeePC? If it's really coming out in April, I imagine we'd have a firm date pinned down by now.
I was ogling the beautiful HP UMPC before I realized it's powered by a drunk hamster that's seen better days.
Nando @ Apr 12th 2008 12:34PM
LOL... cheaptop...
Vito Cassisi @ Apr 12th 2008 8:22PM
Just in response to Juaquin, my tutorial linked from here was written to help people overclock. My goal was to offer several methods, and all my links go to the developers homepage. My site is also non-profit.
I wasn't aware DCI stopped development for that reason, although I did hear about another piece of Eee software suffering the same dilemma.
I'm not sure if "linking to spam" was referring to my site, if so, please reconsider. I'm happy to receive any constructive feedback. Cheers. :)

The Eee Haters need to know what it is they're talking about, and the Eee owners (myself excluded) need to get the sand out of their vagina's and learn how to take a joke.
My Eee performs as I would expect a $400 computer would perform.
If I wanted beauty, grace and elegance I would have boughten a mac. (Can't afford it though, but my ibook that just died last month lasted me 6 years!) If I really wanted to waste my money on a $400 computer, I'd have purchased the Eee with Windows XP on it. But why would I buy something that was crapped on, when I can buy the crap-free version for the same amount of money?
Peshman @ Apr 18th 2008 3:13AM
Eeepc cost me GBP250, upped the ram to 1Gb, installed XP from an old defunct machine license/CD. Now I have a machine I can throw around without worrying about it being stolen. If it breaks I can afford to replace it. Isn't that what it's about? Yes it's got a big bezel. WTF! 3hrs of juice without having to carry a power adapter around, I'll live with a smaller screen to conserve battery life.
Get a grip people, it does what it does really well considering the pricepoint it's being sold at.

eeectrl to the rescue for XP - its so sick
