Say it ain't so! Just a week after HP's totally adorable 2133 Mini-Note PC
popped online for purchase, we've received word that pre-orderers aren't going to be seeing their new machine quite as soon as originally expected. Reportedly, HP has sent out notifications to customers who pre-ordered to let them know that their lappies won't be shipping today as promised, but there's no word on how long the delay will last. Hang in there, subnote lovers -- a tracking number is bound to come soon (er, we hope).

Update: Some commenters are claiming that their unit did in fact ship today -- just keep those fingers crossed that you get lucky.

I ordered mine ($749 config) on 4/10 morning and was told it would ship earlier than the listed date of 4/16. I hadn't received any status emails, so today, I called to check and was told the ship date has been pushed back to >.
Wow.
I called them today and the sales rep told me it will ship on the 29th... but I ordered it on the 9th when it was first available! wth...
I looked over the reviews mentioned early but it seems as though all the reviewers tested it with vista. I was hoping for some benchmarks with linux installed and the 4gb flash drive. I am really surprised no body tested that model out, although the 1.0 ghz via sounds atrocious it would still be nice to know how it performed
I am thinking of waiting till the atom processor makes it in less for the performance increase, which there may not be, and more for the increased battery life which should be substantional. I will be purchasing eventually though as I feel this is the best "cheap" mini laptop around, both in terms of style and function.
All the early reviews were samples from HP, and it looks like they only sent the top-of-the-line version to reviewers. I'm curious about the Linux versions too, and I guess we'll get to see more about them when people start getting the actual retail versions.
I ordered mine the first day HP was taking orders (April 8th). At that time H-P's web site said that if you ordered that day they would ship on the 15th. Today I got two e-mails from HP. The first e-mail said they were running behind schedule, and was vague about when the Mini-Note would ship. The second e-mail (sent 34 minutes later) said the Mini-Note shipped today and had a link to to HP's order-tracking site. Clicking on the links got me to FedEx's tracking site. FedEx says the estimated delivery is by 10:30 a.m. on Friday 4/18/2008. But FedEx also says the status is "shipment exception," and that the package was received after the FedEx cutoff (they make it sound like it missed the plane, but perhaps it's less of a problem than that). In any event--it looks like the Mini-Note is on the way.
FedEx's tracking says the weight of the shipment (laptop, power cord, box and everything) is 1.9 kilograms. Woo-hoo!!!
I'll be happy to send unboxing photos if nobody else has - but not until I get home from work Friday evening. I'm sure someone else will beat me to it.
Bad bad bad news for everyone that has ordered this for use with XP. The HP site doesn't have ANY XP drivers for this notebook! Support says they don't know when they'll have them ready. This is the suck.
Does anyone have any idea where to get compatible drivers that will work?
HP, what are you thinking? ARE you thinking? At least ASUS had the foresight to include a CD with the eee PC that had ALL the XP drivers on it.
i might buy one of these as a data logging station for the lab i work in... buy a few RS232-USB adapters and a USB hub, plug in equipment, start logging, and run VPN software so i can remote-desktop in over the wifi and monitor the equipment. point the webcam at the experiment and i even get a live video feed, too... all for around $600. sounds good to me.
Why do so many people criticize products for not doing things that they were never intended to do? Yeah, of course everyone wants a sub compact notebook with as much power is a gaming desktop for $399, but I feel sorry for the people that actually think this may soon be a reality.
I ordered the $749 model the day it was released because for me, it is an ideal solution. I will use it around my house, in my car, at the airport ect for light web/email and maybe the occasional bit-torrented movie during a flight. Basically, I want a decently spec-d computer that is durable and very small. THAT"S WHAT THIS IS. If you need a powerhouse to lug around than by all means go buy one but please realize that there is a huge market for an inexpensive, portable system that fulfills basic computing needs.
I received an email from HP stating that my order was going to be delayed. So I decided to call in and find out when it is going to be delayed to. I was informed by their customer service rep that it would be delayed till May 9th.
I placed my order on April 8, during the afternoon, I was told that the estimated ship date was April 15th. Now I'm being delayed an extra month, now that is some horrible inventory control. Asked customer service if there is anything they can do or if there was another configuration I could buy. I was told that the linux version might be avaliable for April 22 shipping, but in the end the sales guy said he has no idea for sure.
Ended up canceling my order and decided to wait and get a mini pc later from a company that can fulfill their orders/promises.
What was your configuration?
Is there anywhere in the UK i can order one of these?

I order last friday 4-11-08 and my order was backordered with no word on shipping date so I end up cancelling. Too bad I was really looking forward to getting one of these.
Maybe they are only shipping now to customers working in Education.
Because as the HP dudes in the interviews said they made this for that market and set the release date in order to get units out to these clients who can decide if they want to order them in bulk in time for the new school year.
Perhaps they are checking out who they are shipping to and making sure that only the "important" clients are getting served first. (important being because they said they spent one year getting all the requirements from these clients to get the perfect product.)
Don't get angry, it's just a theory.
Mine is on its way and I'm not an educator or student - just one of the guys with "more money than sense".
FYI for the people that missed the cutoff - my order went was processed on 4/8 before 5 PM Eastern.
And if I had to speculate, I'd guess that the delays are due to battery scarcity since HP isn't offering any backup or replacement batteries for sale right now. I want to get a 3-cell battery for short term, lighter weight home use.

Mine left Shanghai yesterday and just arrived half an hour ago. It is tiny. The screen looks beautiful (in the start-up, ha ha) and keyboard seems nice.
FWIW, I ordered the $750 version, didn't order on the first day, but I'm in NY.
tracking # shows it was released from US customs in Indiana, should arrive tomorrow.
Mine arrived this morning! Overnight from Shanghai (I spelled it right this time, ya happy?), even though I ordered free economy shipping .
I didn't expect it so soon, so I don't have my camera for unboxing photos. There's not much to see anyway, just the battery, power adapter and cord, the usual useless warranty information, a equally useless "Getting Started" pamphlet, and the unit itself.
First impressions, f-ing schweet screen; small, but super crisp (as expected with it's resolution). The loading of the crapware on power up, and Vista setup did seem to take a looong time, but I don't have any experience to compare it to.
More later. Running to another building with this puppy in my bag!
I just spoke with HP and was told that my order that was placed on the 4/12 has been pushed back from shipping on the 19th to May 1st.
Looking at the order status notes it says something about an intercooler part.
Does this mean that HP is getting more orders than expected or does this show kinks in the supply chain?
Arrived and running. Vista setup took 30 to 45 minutes. Then it launched the Windows Update and that has been consuming another hour (probably grabbing SP1).
Only problem I've noticed so far is that the HP Health Check software says that the battery needs to be replaced. The HP Battery Check software disagrees.
The cooling fan has been running pretty much constantly during the update process, but I've also been tweaking things and connecting a second monitor as well.

Mine is waiting at FedEx for me. Where are the XP drivers HP? Give 'em up!
I get "Order number is not found in the Vista. Please contact an Account Rep or Manager for more information" when I try to check the status of mine on the HP web site.
So I just called HP on that message and first they said my order had been canceled (huh?), then they said it had been "re-done" or "doubled and then fixed" or "pulled and then reissued"... I was given a different order number and then told that my previous ship date of April 18 was now going to be May 9 (huh?). If I hadn't called I wouldn't have known a thing about it because they sure didn't consult me about whatever happened and I never received an email or call to let me know a thing had changed.
I ordered on the 10th when they claimed it was in stock, but they now say they need to build more but mine will ship on 5/5 (after I leave for a three week trip to China, apparently with my old, heavy laptop).
I ordered mine 4/10 at 1:50pm. Original ship date was 4/17. I just spoke to HP and they say my new ship date is 5/16 due to a "component shortage".
I'm also getting the Vista error message on their web site.
You may want to double check your ship date of 5/5.

These days I just read every news and blog entries I can find regarding HP 2133, what I think is that HP has a bad strategy for releasing the product.
Firstly, when I first knew the mininote and everyone complained about the VIA processor, there is an explanation from HP: ... one of the reasons is timing, Atom is just not available when HP wants the mininote be available... I don't care why HP wants to release this product ASAP(maybe to compete agains EEE before 900 releases), but the delay of shipping actually makes the reason meaningless: if HP delays the product after Atom is available, why don't they wait until Atom is available and use it?
Just now I checked HP's website and the $700+ model's shipping date is 7th May.
I just received an email saying my HP 2133 just shipped. Had the serial number in the email so I hope to receive it sometime early next week.
