Toshiba updates its Qosmio and Dynabook offerings, elicits yawns, naps
Toshiba is getting back in the swing of things with a round of Summer updates for a bunch of laptops (at least in Japan). First up on the block is the Qosmio F40, the €1352, 15.4-inch model which now trades its HD DVD drive or a DVD multi option, sports a Core 2 Duo T8100 CPU atop a GN965 Express chipset, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and HDMI outs. The company has also updated the Dynabook AX (€922), which now comes in a pink, white, or shiny black casing, with a Celeron 550 CPU on board, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, HDMI outs, and a Super Multi optical drive. The 15.4-inch, WXGA-screened TX gets an bump in the form of the Core 2 Duo T8100, plus 2GB of RAM, 200GB hard drive, and those HDMI / Super Multi drive fixin's, all for €1100. Finally, the smaller, 13.3-inch CX line sports the same CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, everything else that the other models have, and a totally awesome €1230 price tag.

yawns, naps, the occasional whine, whimper, roar and a snap. These are all exciting sounds coming from Engadget headquarters :-)

Where are the hot Asian models?
Richard Lai @ Apr 17th 2008 4:24PM
I thought it's only Samsung and LG that show off their hot models.

I've said this once, and I'll say it again. Ontop of being extra ugly, I stopped buying Toshitty after 4 out of 3 I originally bought (yes 4 out of 3!?) of them failed on me. After the fire, they replaced it with yet another one that never worked... and phone support was hell. The only saving grace (curse?) was that I bought their extended warrenty through ServiceNET which resulted in being on hold and arguing for 3 years! I would have been better off if Tooshitty just mugged me point blank.
I haven't said it enough! All of my Toshitty laptops were kept in clean rooms and dust free. Their DELL, HP, and SONY equibilents in the same room never had a single glitch.

HP, Toshiba and Gateway machines are built by Quanta or MiTac. Dell is a Compal customer and Apple/Sony are Asus - not for long though.
Richard Lai @ Apr 17th 2008 4:05PM
Navi Thach: Sony also have their own factories somewhere in Asia, and I don't think they get laptops from AsusTek anymore.
Asus no longer produces for Apple - all Apple laptops are from Quanta, I believe.
Correct me if I'm wrong, people.

I am with you on this one. I own a G35 and it has broken down on me four times in less than a year and a half of ownership. All four times, it was the motherboard that failed. Toshibas are pure crap and will never buy anything Toshiba again.

Is it me or does that remote look like the PS3 BD remote control?

Now I understand Engadget wants to be international and all, but why must they continuously post laptops, devices, etc that will never make it to the US? Stuff like South Korea only, really disheartens someone after seeing a awesome new gadget, and honestly how many people from s. korea visit this site? Okay enough irrevelant ranting, that laptop is okay.. I guess.

It's Toshiba, it's junk that Worst Buy, China-Mart, and Costco pushes - more so at at Worst Buy where from idiot kid who should be working at Abercrombie is trying to get his sales cut for the week...

I'm the only one with an awesome Toshiba experience???
I've taken my satellite series laptop all around the world for the last few years, it survived everything, INCLUDING a year-long deployment in the city-of-Fun-and-Joy aka Baghdad... plenty of sand, dust, and 130+ degree days.
Of course my screen is now too lose to support itself, I'm missing about 5 keys, the dvd burner failed a bit ago, the Harmon/Kardon speakers now distort bass when I turn the volume up, it gives me that stupid "Built-in HDD password" error now and then... but I refuse to give it up.
I'd definitely buy Toshiba again, indeed.

hmm that remote control looks familiar... Looks like the PS3 Remote!!
