Medion's Akoya Mini takes aim at the Eee
The Eee-sparked trend towards smaller, cheaper laptops continues unabated -- which is good news if you like small, cheap things. The latest entry into the ultraportable market comes in the form of the Medion Akoya Mini, a handsome looking entry that clearly aims to compete with ASUS' wunderkind. The 10-inch laptop scores big points right out of the box due to its inclusion of Intel's infamous Atom CPU. The system will feature a traditional hard drive, with some form of Linux on-board, 1GB of RAM standard, two USB ports, a memory card slot, VGA out, and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. No word on if we'll see this in the States, but it's hitting Europe soon with a starting price of €399 (or about $638).

Best thing about Medion is they have a 3yr warranty as standard :)
Medion isn't a bad brand. I currently use a Medion Akoya EX laptop with MCE 2005 intalled and it has been stable and trustworthy. Certainly more than my wife's Gateway laptop that sees the BSOD frequently. I bought the Medion after an HP laptop had its motherboard fail within six months of very light use. When the HP came back after warranty repair I gave it to my parents and kept the Medion. I suspect most who say Medion sucks has never owned one...
If it was $399 I would definitely be interested.
Damn the weakening US dollar...
I actually LIKE all this EEE-related news. I'll be in the market for these things, and I like to know whats available.
Same here. The Eee stuff is actually what got me to pay regular attention to Engadget.
Seriously Engadget.
Are you going to turn into an EEE-PC comparison blog!? Any news of an UMPC instantly gets branded as related to EEE pc, and it's almost as if Asus patended the idea of a small computer...
Please.
You guys should be doing PR or media relations, because all you do is bag the other side compared to your illustrious EEE Pc. That's the kind of bitch-made bullshit HIllary does to Obama.
Engadget, bitch made.
The best in the small type laptops is the TOSHIBA LIBRETTO U100 !!
It has Windows XP PRO with a 60gig HD,1,2 ghz processor and you also have a multi dvd burner docking station.
Why are you guys and girls complain about something that is NOT worth to buy. In the adverts on the internet and tv it look nice, but HANDLING them feels like only an EXCUSE to have a small type laptop. It feels cheap in value too and can't even run large size type programs like Photoshop or Adobe Premiere.
It will be faster to send an email via your mobile phone than to switch on the EEEPC.
It will never be spent or welcome on my stable.
And what exactly gives you the idea that it was supposed to run those programs?
It's a satellite pc to a desktop or more powerful laptop, not a standalone laptop. It's for people to use for word processing at school or work, for quick notes, for portability.
You can whine all you like about how it's too weak, but the fact is, it's supposed to be weak, and obviously people want it since it sells so well.
