Considering that Samsung's
YP-P2 just might be the most
updated PMP
of all
time, we're guessing that a lot of things that users would have changed just months ago have already been done by the powers that be. That being said, we critical gadget owners are never truly satisfied at heart, so we're curious to know how you'd spin the forthcoming firmware update(s). Or would you focus your attention on external matters, instead? We know you've had ample time to fool around with one of Sammy's most prized media players ever, so don't be shy down there in comments, alright? Who knows -- your recommendations could be front and center in the next
Blue Wave.
Turn it into a mobile phone.
word
The phone capability chip circuitry costs under $20 dollars or less .. havent checked in a while. El cheapo camera? $8
So agreed (with GPS of course).
And bump the LCD resolution up to at least WVGA so it can be used to watch HD movies and surf the web with ease.
So sure, it will increase the cost. But people will buy it, people rather pay money for quality than be stingy for crap.
Most people have to buy two devices .. so why not include all of those in one gadget? It actually saves money.
That would be one fat battery hungry machine. That's the problem with all in ones.
i will put an apple logo on it
@ECG
Power management. It doesnt have to power anything it's not using.
Better sound quality than D2, and I'm sold, ya, 50 hours + battery life in P3 would be nice
turn it into a psp! (which by the way is updated more.)
I will put a Zune logo on it. They will both suffer the same fate.
Just make it play FLAC, and I'll be happy. Well, almost happy. Make it play FLAC, and print lyrics from LYRICS tag, and I'll be really happy. And make the cover pic fill the entire screen.
32 gb flash. i'd buy it in a heartbeat.
how bout a 256GB SSD in 2009?
http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/04/samsung-intros-spinpoint-mp2-reiterates-plans-for-256gb-ssd-in/
lol
Built in browser + Wifi and more storage.
I would put a Grand Theft Auto IV girl licking a lollipop on it, really big.
the 3 above comments hit, what i was gonna say perfectly.
the 3 first comments*
OK, you had me just a little worried.
Like Ravi said, more memory.
And also a little cheaper please.
Beyond that, maybe an SDHC or MicroSDHC card slot and we'd be laughing.
That "we" doesn't include Apple, (or Microsoft, or Creative, or...) does it?
'Cause THAT helped. You know, although the iPhone is "nice" (I personally wouldn't buy it and would prefer something a little more flexible like the Neo1973, but I'm a geek), there ARE other things out there that are also very nice, and serve a different purpose. The iPhone is not the end-all-be-all gadget for the rest of time, or even right now. Believe it or not, there ARE some things the iPhone cannot do (I know, surprising, right?).
But I guess you'll get high-ranked and me low-ranked because this is engadget after all, and the iPhone trumps all, and EVERY single topic, whether related even remotely to Apple or the iPod/iPhone or not, must receive at least one response (usually multiple responses) like this. So good for you for doing things the engadget way!
I'd add the revolutionary OS X multi-touch interface
iTunes syncing
The critically acclaimed Mobile Safari web browser
Third party applications and games this June that will go unrivaled in functionality
The availability of 8gb, 16gb and 32gb capacities
The wireless iTunes store
Google maps
YouTube videos
The ability to view my e-mail
A weather widget
And I'd pretty much be set.
So you would double the price for about 10% more content and a pretty box?
You would also want to give it the same crappy sound quality to match right?
total NOB WRASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, either this guy is paid by Apple to say that or somebody needs a hobby.
big
ass
eyeroll
SDHC would wrk for me.
Price drop always helps.
Oooo, I know make it Rockbox compatible!!!!!
Oh, wait that would make it like an iPod.
an old
monochrome
iPod.
but, yeah, expandable storage. Mos' def.
Where the hell are you getting "unrivaled in functionality" from? (I mean, these apps with "unrivaled functionality" haven't even been released yet -- how do you know they will be "unrivaled"?) You cannot open-source the apps as easily as on a less restrictive device, meaning less innovation (well, equal innovation but less collaboration). You think the iPhone apps will rock? Go check some of the apps for the not-even-released-yet Android phones. Seriously, get a hobby. And a reality check.
was that sarcasm? CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED SAFARI? that $h!t got macbook air pwned in 8 seconds.
I was going to ask how that improves the YP-P2, but then it hit me: by Apple fanboys not buying it in favor of the OBVIOUSLY far superior Apple products, no one will know how cool it is, or perhaps even what the YP-P2 is, so then no one will buy them, and the price will drop. Improvement.
So, you saying you would improve it by lowering the price, right?
Wi-fi, 32Gb, Internet Browser as people have already mentioned. Then I would round off the corners a little since its a bit square. Slap in a few coloured options, Silver, Black, White, Red etc. Next add a small speaker and microphone so you can use it as a portable dictaphone. Give it standardised media formats (apparently you have to convert videos to a proprietary Samsung format!?!). Calculators obviously just been added, but how about a built in dictionary/thesarus. Add in a calendar facility that syncs with Outlook. Drop in a stylus somewhere and put a small scribble/note pad facility so that you can jot down memos and save them as pictures for later retrieval.
Oh and a stopwatch with laptimers and an Alarm function using the newly added speaker. If they did this it would replace a shedload of gadgets
It's already available in white, black and red and it has a microphone. Voice recording is supposed to be coming in the next update.
Microphone? Then it's easy...
Skype!
Probably a few will agree with me, but I found having dictionary (english to whatever language) quite helpful when talking to a foreigner or when traveling... May not be used often but hey, when you need it, it can be quite useful (an app that used when I had the Cowon D2)?.
Ability to listen to FM through the Bluetooth Stereo Headset
Thats a limitation of FM technology. The wired headphones are used as antenna. It is technically possible to use the radio with BT headphones, but you wouldn't be getting a very good signal
I bought a black 8gb P2 a while back, and although I ended up sending it back, I loved the Bluetooth ability. That is what separates this one from the pack, they should focus more on that.
They should add the FTP protocol, no more one-by-one file transfers!
-Ezra Hilyer - http://www.straypoetry.com
I'd love to see the UI improve a tiiiiny bit. It's easy to use, but the double-tapping isn't going so well sometimes.
I'd love to see touch sensitivity fixed up a bit.
I'd love to see a longer battery life.
I'd love to see texting available via bluetooth. I was kind of sad I wasn't able to just text, but my P2 keeps beeping when I get a message. I don't care if it's a standard numeric keypad.
I'd love to see more customization options. I'd also love to see the damn bar at the bottom of the myskin gone. Ahhh!!! Why are all other buttons transparent, but on myskins, it's not, when the skin is meant to showoff a photograph of some sort.
The ambient light sensor on the touch, I'd love to see on the P2. I go outside, and have to manually adjust the brightness. I get inside, I have to manually dim it.
I'd love to see the screen get a lot brighter. It's impossible to read outside.
Take off the damn karaoke shit on lyrics.
Support Japanese D< I keep manually typing out lyrics to my songs only to have them come up as @!@$#@%#$%^ ^&^%# @#$%T#$%^%$ ~~~%^%$^%$
More space, but the limited technology holds us back from that. I will probably wait until a 32GB P2 comes out as opposed to a new iPod, as 4GB is nothing for me....60GB was nothing for me...but I like the touchscreens.
I'd love to see an increase in accessories. I dropped it once and now it's got a paint chip and a slight mark on the top corner of the player. I'd love to have a case I didn't have to pay $50 for. A DECENT case.
Make more games. There is a touch screen. So many things can come out of it! Simple games, and solitaire would be amazing! Oooooh pyramids too!
Music controls while playing games. Perhaps just implement them into the menu or the need to tap the top corner or something, but them existing would be amazing.
I'd like it if it can share stuff wirelessly (I haven't read the updates but I thought the bluetooth function was only for phone and headset x2)
I'd wish for it to be a wireless remote control, don't know if this has infrared, but it'd be cool to control the PS3 thru bluetooth
Does this already have GPS function or camera? I'd like those too.
I'd like this to have satellite radio as well or HD radio.
I saw that the Korean version can watch TVs with theirs, it'd be nice too for this one but I guess there's too much hassle since we're switching DTV by 2009.
And since I'm thinking of adding so much stuff, I'd hope that they have two types of detachable batteries included, a slim and an extended life version(s).
Useless as fuck without AT LEAST one SDHC slot.
why not a gp2x?
Widgets - like weather and news that automatically update via BT cell phone.
Browser
Streaming media (flash, video, audio)
SD card slot.
Emulators. Half the reason I want an ipod touch is to play old NES and SNES games on the fly. Get that on the p2 and I'd buy one tomorrow
buy a PSP!

What's wrong with you. Really.
huh?
SDHC slot.
add a browser, and make the screen 5" 800x480. have an open source os
Dude, thats a new device, not an update. Let's be realistic here.
5" screen? Are you kidding me? Might as well make the thing a full UMPC and be done with it!
Better side buttons.
Be specific plz. Better how?
Have it make a BLT for me when I am hungry.
MSC mode and a concealable SDHC slot
Just flash the KR firmware and you have MSC mode. Been enjoy since I bought mine.
continous playback between albums
- Improve the software
- More file support (divx)
- Delete files directly from the device (even if currently playing)
All 3 have happened.
You can delete files straight from the P2.
I use .avi videos with Xvid and Divx
Bluewave firmware is improving the device via user suggestion
This suffers from what every other non-iPod suffers from, no integration with a dedicated piece of desktop software. Think of all the things you can do with an iPod (like it or not) like setting tracks to skip when shuffling, specifying which tracks will auto bookmark, etc. The iPod is moving on and adding features while everyone else is still trying to beat them at the audio player game. I'd gladly buy a competing product but no one comes close to offering what I used to in an iPod, yet. The Zune is trying but it's still way far behind.
Who says that's suffering?
There are a lot of people out there hate iTunes and wouldn't be overly warm to a watered-down iTunes rip-off either.
And to say that the iPod is moving on and adding new features is a joke - every feature has been used by someone else first on a different DAP.
Even now, what like 7 or 8 generations in, the iPod is still one of the least-feature-filled DAPs around.
.
Finally, a comment that cuts the crap and gets right to the point. Kudos!
I get it!
PS3 and Xbox 360 emulator.
release it a year ago
"PS3 and Xbox 360 emulator.", impossible, they have too great of hardware for ANY DAP to emulate, even the iTouch/iPhone
.............. I believe it was a "joke"........
Why does the Samsung's interface (along with other iClones) give you just a crap wannabe iPhone interface? By making these devices look vaguely like the iPhone who would know the difference and not jump to the conclusion (although not final verdict) that this device is trying to compete with the iPhone (or Touch)?
I'm with np05 and would just get an iPhone.
Otherwise the YP-P2 should have a phone function, thats a change I would make.
what about just nintendo?
meant to add please don't suggest another player or system, I want to know if it's capable on the p2.
Ahem, there is a 4.13 version out as of ... today http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfile/ContentsFile.aspx?CDSite=us&CttFileID=1639796&CDCttType=FM&ModelType=N&ModelName=YP-P2JAB&VPath=FM/200804/20080423170520078_YP-P2_080418_V413.zip
Make the UI less suckish.
Meh, I'd rather have a touch, only because I was so happy with mine. (kleptos ftl)
For all those that are iQueens. Before you start flaming that the P2 is a wannabe iphone. SAMSUNG MANUFACTURES THE iPHONE FOR APPLE! So if it resembles the iphone it's because it's their technology but not their design. Just crack the iphone apart and suprise! samsung parts!
As for improvements for the P2. Samsung should fuse the P2 with their own Samsung Instinct Mobile. Look familiar anyone?
1. micro SDHC slot
2. longer battery life
3. GPS
Having UMS support outside of Korea without resorting to hacks...please samsung it's really strange that you implement UMS support in your players but it's only available in korea. Make it configurable. Make MTP the default but allow us to use UMS.
I like samsung players but UMS it's important to me. I will have to search for something not samsung when my Z5 breaks :(
Ability to listen to FM through the Bluetooth Stereo Headset
Ability to automatically recognize cell hone and BT headset at same time
Better battery life or power mgt. - it's dead after 2 days of no-use
Other than that I love it - gave my two I-Touch's away to my wife and daugher.
Apple is good, but does not cater to the BT crowd.
- on-wire remote control?
- More than measly 8/16 GB! damnit, this thing is huge for just 8/16 BG!
- What? U can't "hold" the touchscreen only? So I can't skip a song without pulling this huge thing from my pocket, un"holding" it, pressing the sidebutton or flicking the screen??
- Make it usable as a "on-the-move-in-my-pocket" device...
make it soo a non stereo blu tooth head set can connect... more games .. like tetris and what not... gps..the ablitly to hook it to a hd tv.. like the psp..
and to use custom equilizer when listen to the radio...abilty to convert it .. with out having to convert it using the samsung software im sure there more.. a camera add on... and soo on
Add just 2 more of those tiny buttons. For FAST FORWARD/REWIND and obviously, they should also do double duty as NEXT TRACK/PREVIOUS TRACK. That would be so convenient for when ur working out and its in ur pocket.
And regdless of whether or not you put those extra buttons, give us an option to make the HOLD switch (as someone already said) only "hold" any touchscreen activity. With the current design and placement of the physical buttons, you have to be very deliberate in order to press them.....which means its pretty hard to press them accidentally.
playback every video format known to man without having to convert anything!
that's a pc

Copypasta....
-They're making more themes. The 3rd bluewave beta released a few new skins.
-You can opt to turn your screen off in I think 10 seconds in the settings menu. I don't exactly remember, my p2 isn't with me currently, but you can change this.
-There is a slow motion and a highspeed option for video and audio playback
-There is already a calculator
-The dictionary is available via Korean firmware, which does not change the language of your P2, and you'll notice no difference at all.
-I've synced my cellphone address book to my P2 already.
-In order to save battery, just dim the backlight, keep it off when not in use, and avoid video playback.
Actually USE the p2 before making these suggestions. I assume you're the same person on the first page =D
I swear I'm not a samsung fangirl, I just have no life today.
Samsung has a video chip in the iPhone; it does not manufacture the whole thing. Foxconn does.
Actually make the damn blue ring do something
I'd like to see a full OS and WiFi. I might have bought an iPhone/iPod Touch if they actually put in the OS and not the gimp that they did. But I'd settle for a web browser and RSS feed, obviously with WiFi included.
Divx support, public development SDK.
in the next hardware rev:
802.11g w/ browser support
micro sd support for more (way more) ram.
Besides the many people below who don't own this and make up excuses to not buy it because they are too cheap or poor, I have a good suggestion... It would be really nice to change the way the SHUFFLE tracks works. It constantly repeats songs and not really SHUFFLES just Randomizes and does not register what songs have already been played. Plus having the option to Delete the PLAYLIST 1 through w.e. it numbers would be nice, I would like to only have the playlists I make not the unnamed ones taking up space.
oh and another thing... When I am listening to music I have the volume relatively high, and when I turn it off I would only assume it would stay where I left it, but when I turn it back on it is to my great unsatisfaction that of course the volume is set back to the middle and then I have to turn it up again and we all know the touch screen for the volume is like fingering a 300 pound woman...if you haven't tried it don't take my word and this samsung for it
Everyone seems to think that the iPhone was the first device to have tiled icons. I mean, this barely resembles the iPhone in any way in my opinion, but whatever. Most engadget folks haven't ever seen a standard, run-of-the-mill Palm PDA. My T3 has tiled icons too! It MUST be a copy of the iPhone! The TX too -- it even has a simplistic interface like the iPhone! Guess what -- they're TOUCH SCREEN devices too! (Though not multi-touch, but the technology wasn't available at the time)
Wait a minute...I've just heard startling news. Palm, though a basically dead company now, actually released these devices BEFORE the iPhone! I didn't realize smartphones and PDAs EXISTED before the iPhone/iPod Touch.[/sarcasm]
I actually think the engineers want to (and can integrate) all that stuff. But, three limiting factors come to mind:
1) Size matters. Yeah ok laugh it off but you know if right with a cellphone,PMP, or Pocket PC. Once the microlithography tech goes past 45nm (acknowledging quantum limits) there may be more options.
2) Cost effective. Would you buy a 500 dollar phone with full options (half you probably don't need), or the 300 model with 80 percent? The higher resolution screens, and some hardware options are simply too expensive for the companies to integrate right now.
3) Power source. I say power source rather than batteries as there are a multitude of options out there that're still in their infancy, and won't see mobile integration for another few years (because of points 2, and 1). More power means more power draining options.
There is hope though. If you look at the PCs the military use, they've options that commercial mobile products rarely see (one example being a biometric reader). Miltiary investments in technology have the tendancy to see themselves flow out to the commerical market.
I personally can't wait for the capability to have my phone, TV,internet, and GPS all done through low orbit sattellite networks. I'd also like to see the roll out capable mobile flexible displays (last I read they only did monochrome).
Yes I know I'm not being realistic, but its nice to dream.
I haven't used the device, so I can't say much about the interface. But it looks like it could benefit from the following:
Expand the screen to fill the whole face of the device (get rid of the dot on the bottom)
SDHC slot(s)
Wifi (maybe)
Open source OS would be neat too.
That glowing dot is an important feature. It lights up your face when you use the P2. Just in case all the player's awesomeness somehow doesn't do it.
If that things was an unlocked phone. Automatic buy upto price tag of 400 USD.
As an MP3, I'd like it to be a little thinner, and have wifi and and a browser. I'm sold.
OS X/iTunes compatibility. That'd be enough for the price it is.
THIS IS FOR ALL OF YOU iFREAKS.....
-samsung makes the iPhone.
-samsung released the P2 BEFORE the iTouch.
-Samsung didnt want it to be an iClone, and they did that well.
I personally LOVE my 8Gb P2
there are a number of good ideas here. i would like to see a few more. my suggestions are for updates to the current P2. of course i would like to see WiFi and SD slot. but that would mean i'd have to get a new unit...
- i like the idea of more phone/BT integrations. adding texting/IM/SMS would be great. MORE integration of the two devices, such as the already suggested CallerID feature (at least caller id for known numbers would be cool. waiting for it to scroll takes too long)
- BT2BT stuff would be cool, too. 'search for other awesome P2 users' and the ability to send them text/im/sms, or to any BT device which supports that.
- love the idea of being able to change the functions of the buttons. would also like to see some changes to the "locking" feature as suggested. for me, the only thing that needs to be locked are track controls (fwd, rwd, play/pause, etc., or more specifically, just the touchscreen itself).
- when locked, either tapping or double tapping or some other finger motion to flash the display. i ride the train to work and am always looking at the time. depending on where you are sitting you don't always have full control of your limbs and constantly having to unlock the unit gets to be a pain with the way you hold the unit. it would be nice to flick my thumb across the display when it is locked to have it flash the time.
- inspired by above... screensavers... namely a clock!
- the ability to turn off the light on the front. it's just a waste of batteries.
- different connection modes: sometimes i want to charge my unit AND play songs on attached speakers (not through the PC). also, this feature would allow in-car stereo connections to play music and charge (if you have the USB to do so). car integration for this would be friggin' awesome!
- i think the menu custimization is coming in the next update?? either way, i want to remove the Rhapsody icon. i don't use it.
- also... LACK of compatibility with iTunes/QuickTime. that's right. i actually want the unit to start melting if you ever try to use those software programs. ok. just kidding...
Gary the No Trash Cougar
I want that thing to play doom !
WHYYY?????!!!!!!!!!!
