New iMacs running an overclocked Penryn chip, not Montevina
Following this morning's iMac introduction, speculation has been rampant as to whether Apple got an early shot at Intel's upcoming Core 2 Duo Extreme X9100 chip. The X9100 is meant to usher in the "Montevina" Centrino 2 era, and boasts significant less power consumption than its forebears, in addition to those spiffy new clock speeds. Well, it turns out the new iMacs aren't Montevina, but instead a special-made 45nm Penryn 3.06GHz chip with a 1066MHz frontside bus. That means most of the juice of the X9100, but at 55 watts instead of 44. This chip exclusivity has been a bit of a pattern with Apple, and one which we're sure its competitors are quite appreciative of.Read - Electronista

Depends on the demographic - significantly more than 5% of college students, for example, use Macs. Virtually all the students at my school have laptops and [completely unscientific estimate] I would guess a quarter are Macbook/Macbook Pro. I live with 5 guys, half of us have Macs, and two of them have pledged to get Macs as their future laptops...
It really seems to me that most people that are open-minded and actually *experience* using OSX are won over, and I think college students tend to be a) open-minded and b) really annoyed by their shit not working.

What are you people talking about? All Apple did is overclock current Penryn CPUs. There not getting any "Special chip".
On another note:
Mac fanboy? Get out.
Windows fanboy? Get out.
Linux fanboy? Get out.
Linux/Mac fanboy? Get out.
Linux/Windows fanboy? Get out.
Windows/Mac fanboy? Get out.
Fanboys, they're all idiots, no matter what they like or use. *Waits for low ranking from the fanboys*
Big John @ Apr 28th 2008 11:24PM
...and we could all do without snarky comments like yours, designed to anger fanboys and goad a response out of them.

1) Regardless if they are the Santa Rosa or Montevina platform they are still Penryn chips. That is your first FAIL!
2) Even if you overclock the processor, something not easy to do with mobile chips, save for the extreme version, you still have to increase the L2 Cache by 50%, the FSB by 25% and the RAM speed by 17%. That is your second FAIL!
Travis @ Apr 29th 2008 12:17AM
It's nice that they keep upgrading the processors, but why do they still only come with an 8x DVD burner? I might buy an iMAC soon I think.

Another boring release. Where is the xMac already?
yawn

Wow there's a whole lot of hate in these comments.
If you love Apple products then that’s fine.
If you love Microsoft products then that’s fine too.
Everyone is allowed an opinion even if you disagree with them but there really is no need to come out on either side and spew all the hate.
There I've said it now rank it as you see fit!

I'm reporting it!
chrisknarr @ Apr 29th 2008 9:03AM
Ford is the best....No way bro, my Chevy is way better.......blah blah blah, people just like to argue their opinion, because everyone likes to be right, Apple cost to much, Microsoft is probably going to be the next skynet who cares, and we'll all die from poverty or a army of cyborgs from the future
Me...i just drive my toyota FTW,

Awww, poor Clak, you need a hug for how poorly you and all the other Apple users have been treated. You are just fighting the good fight, against all us evil Windows users.
What BS. Just keep making up excuses, Clak, and keep playing the hapless victim. Your argument does not hold up. You could make it fit in the OSX vs. Windows argument, but, as is so often pointed out, Zune has a much smaller marketshare than the iPod. The minority OSX users fighting against the majority of Windows users, but are not the iPod users treating the Zune users the same as you are complaining about? But that is OK, because you are Apple users. The argument only applies to you at your discretion, just like you going into a Surface post and adding your $0.02 is OK, but you decide that somebody making a negative posting about the iPod is bad. Grow up.

guys.. glossy panel! omg why?
d0g_p00p @ Apr 29th 2008 8:29PM
I don't get it. Those are not overclocked Penryn chips. Penryn runs on a 1.33Ghz FSB, if anything they are underclocked Penryn chips. Conroe is the 1066FSB part.
wmspider @ Apr 30th 2008 10:49AM
Wait, why are people talking about Windows vs Macs hardware? Last time I checked, Windows was an operating system, and had nothing to do with hardware...
tadeu @ Jun 14th 2008 10:07AM
No blu-ray driver? Does it suggest that the "new" MBP won't sport a BD drive too?
Big John @ Apr 28th 2008 11:22PM
Why would it have a BD driver if there isn't a BD drive in it? Also, what does this have to do with the rumored MBP upgrade?
You're reaching a bit here.
tadeu @ Jun 14th 2008 10:07AM
Well, I'm just wondering why would Apple put a BD drive on the upcoming MBP if even the Imac doesn't offer this option?
I like Apple products very much but I have to admit that Imacs & MBPs are clearly overpriced. It's hard to pay $2500+ for a MBP when you have Sony models at $1700 offering BD, 3 G of ram 17" display 512mb dedicated etc etc. Just my pov...
