Netgear offers up 6-bay ReadyNAS Pro
Four months is just too long to go without an all new ReadyNAS, so we suppose that's why Netgear is kicking out an all new 6-bay unit (6TB RNDP6610; 3TB RNDP6310; 1.5TB RNDP6350) for those obsessed with storage. The box can handle up to 6TB of HDD space and features an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM (up to 4GB supported), 128MB of embedded flash for the OS, a pair of gigabit Ethernet ports, three USB 2.0 sockets and support for RAID 0/1/5/6 and Auto-Expandable X-RAID2. As expected, Windows / Mac / Linux clients can all tap in, and the unit streams all sorts of media on the side. Of course, acquiring the industry's first 6-bay small-form-factor NAS drive won't come cheap, with the ReadyNAS Pro starting at around two large.

at 2 large, how is this better than a standard server?
Micanos @ Apr 29th 2008 12:31AM
Cause it has speakers!
...well... it looks like it...
henry @ Apr 29th 2008 1:08AM
it's for morons with more money than sense.
stefan @ Apr 29th 2008 1:14AM
actually: How is this not worse than a standard server. I frankly don't see any NAS-wise advantage over a midi tower with a matching CPU+Ram costing half the price. Tops.
Plus the RAID-Controller is probably Hardware and proprietary.... good luck if it should fail.

@henry
It's "more dollars than sense". You lost the play on words. :D
Get it?
happy_penguin @ Apr 29th 2008 12:44AM
Expensive no doubt, but sexy as hell.
peter @ Apr 29th 2008 2:20AM
Darn. I just forked out for a ReadyNAS NV+. Mind you, this thing will probably cost the Earth. I got the ReadyNAS as I was tired of dealing with 'server' issues (Software updates and dodgy RAID controllers) impacting data availability. For what this thing would probably cost, I think I'd look at a server instead though.

Fogedaboutit, this new one has totally jumped the shark. $2000 for two more bays, and it has the power consumption of a computer not a storage array.

there is a god!

...*drools* I want.
Dang, and I was planning on going to college, too...

The O.S. is definitely a nice feature of ReadyNAS devices, but it sucks that they don't offer lower priced diskless units. (and I mean lower price!!!!) The company has kinda gone downhill since Netgear purchased it, but I still like my old Readynas X6.
Kimo @ Apr 29th 2008 1:09AM
Of course, the company going downhill is my own opinion. (had some power supply issues, like many others, and it was quite frustrating that we couldn't actually get replacements from Netgear)

Wow. Wonder what exactly XRAID2 is? I know my NV has XRAID, but what exactly are the details of this?
torqueo @ Apr 29th 2008 1:29AM
I'll take a homemade FreeNAS box over this thing any day. It looks nice, but why drop a NAS where you'll see/hear it, anyway?
gabe @ Apr 29th 2008 1:40AM
Anyone else want to stuff beer into that thing?
Xepol @ Apr 29th 2008 2:32AM
truely, brain numbingly insane.
For their bottom price of 2gs, I can definitely afford a full PC with 6tb of hd space, and I'll bet their 6tb storage server costs a heck of a lot more than 2gs.
I don't think the software driven raid options are really worth the premium here.

"starts at $2,000"...ouch.
I wonder how much the 6TB one costs. It's not $2K, that's for sure.
I am so very tempted, but that thing is probably going to be closer to $3K, and that's just not a good price any more.
tpp @ Apr 29th 2008 5:43AM
I just checked their site. The 3TB ReadyNAS NV+ is still selling at $2,500 on their site. You can get it cheaper from retailers, of course, but still. If that's any indication of the 6TB ReadyNAS Pro pricing, it's gonna be hella expensive.

Has Netgear really lost it? Are they this disconnected from marketplace reality to believe that the price point they are targeting makes good sense? If you are a business user there the unit isn't suitable for sitting in a rack and there are better/cheaper rack mount units out there. If you are a small business you're more concerned about price - and there are cheaper units out there. While I like the ReadyNAS line, it has always been so woefully out of wack with respect to the rest of the market that I'm not sure how the line manages.
I blame Steve Jobs (and I'm an Apple user)

Infrant's Readynas used to be a cheap, nice 4-disk unit, it was available WITHOUT DISKS and PRICE GAUGING.
Then came along NETGEAR and DISKLESS UNIT DISAPPEARED IMMEDIATELY and the rest WAS SUDDENLY SELLING FOR TWICE AS MUCH.
Fuckin' PoS NETGEAR tactics, they were alwasy the biggest shitmakers in networking, now they've switched to buying up decent companies and taking them down to the dirt. :(
I was eyeballing with Readynas but now that SHITGEAR is in charge NO WAY.
