I just purchased the M50S by Asus on Newegg last week, but it's a different configuration. Still, I have to say, the prices that Asus offers for its laptops is brilliant. While I was browsing in the market, any similar laptops by Dell or Lenovo or Sony were always far more expensive than the Asus one. Plus, the one year accidental damage warranty is pretty amazing too. It almost makes me paranoid that there must be some catch that I'm missing.
All in all, it's a lovely laptop (I can comment on both, because the exterior is the same).
How is the speaker quality? I noticed that Asus is starting to put Altec Lansing speakers into their laptops - very kind of them. I believe the M50 series does have them.
And does the LCD suffer from the old grainy problem?
The speakers are decent, though I wouldn't go as far as to say that they nullify the need for external ones if you'd like to use this laptop a lot for entertainment purposes.
The screen is alright. It's not the best quality in the world, but for the price, it's pretty decent. I don't know about the previous problems that you mentioned, but this one's as fine as it's gonna get, I think.
Here's the Newegg page if anyone wants to have a look at the specs and read other, "proper" reviews by people who bought it. This is NOT a page for the M50S mentioned in this article; it's for the configuration I purchased.
The grainy issue I mentioned earlier is to do with the 6-bit LCD panels, where the whites tend to look dirty and grainy. I believe MacBooks and some Dell laptops had this problem too.
About the trackpad, it looks kinda small and kind of deeply embossed. Is that the case? I have a huge gripe about the trackpads on the old Dells and the Toshibas where they implemented all those trackpad features too.
I will admit, I'm a big fan of MBA's MASSIVE trackpad.
